Announcers read prepared scripts or ad-lib commentary on the air, as they present news, sports, weather, time, and commercials. If a written script is required, they may do the research and writing. Announcers also interview guests and moderate panels or discussions. Some provide commentary for the audience during sporting events, at parades, and on other occasions. Announcers often are well known to radio and television audiences and may make promotional appearances and remote broadcasts for their stations. Radio announcers often are called

http://www.museum.tv/archives/etv/F/htmlF/firstpeople/firstpeople.htm
FIRST PEOPLES' TELEVISION BROADCASTING IN CANADA Canadian Programming Service their national communities. Partly as a result of the pioneering and persistent activities of First Peoples to make their programming an integral part of the Canadian media infrastructure, Canada has also come to be identified as a model of media resistance against the overwhelming forces of continental integration in North America. It is difficult to talk about the introduction of television into the North without acknowledging its relationship to radio. This is because radio set a very special attitudinal context for the arrival of television. First Peoples expected that television would have local and regional indigenous input, as well as national, Southern-produced programming, as had been the case with radio. A brief overview of Northern radio is, therefore, foundational to understanding why First Peoples reacted the way they did to television. Radio entered the North in the late 1920s, at the same time that airplanes began to develop easy access to the Arctic. By the early thirties, trading posts, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police centres, and religious missions were equipped with high frequency radios to maintain contact with their headquarters in the South. Native peoples did not have direct access to these early radio services. In 1958, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's (CBC) Northern Service was established, taking over the infrastructure of shortwave transmitters established by the Canadian Armed Forces and the Department of Transport.

Milestones in Television Broadcasting
in Northern Canada
The Anik B satellite is launched. Inuit organizations in the eastern Arctic participate in pilot projects to test communications satellites in applications such as TV broadcasting, community communications, distance education and tele-health.
The CRTC establishes the Committee on Extension of Service to Northern and Remote Communities (the Therrien Committee ). The subsequent report stressed the urgent need for special measures to allow aboriginal people to preserve their languages and foster their culture through various broadcasting initiatives.
The CRTC licenses CANCOM to deliver a range of southern programming into northern and remote communities. As part of the license approval, CANCOM is required to provide assistance to northern aboriginal broadcasters.
Inuit leaders in the eastern Arctic pressed for a permanent television system, and in January 1982 the Inuit Broadcasting Corporation began broadcasting in allocated slots on CBC North.
The Government of Canada announces the Northern Broadcasting Policy and the Northern Native Broadcast Access Program . Public funds are allocated for the production of radio and television programs by thirteen native communications societies across the north.
The CRTC releases its Northern Native Broadcasting policy statement. This policy establishes certain short term measures to ensure native broadcasters have access to existing northern distribution systems, but it also emphasizes that a dedicated northern transponder would be required to handle the volume of programming and to ensure that programs were scheduled at appropriate times.

General Information
Majors in radio and television broadcasting study the relationship between the mass media and society and develop skills in such specialties as reporting, performance, production, sales, and management. What the Major is Like Broadcasting courses are generally taught in departments or schools of communication, journalism, telecommunication, and radio/television/film. Wherever its official home, the major in broadcasting provides students with both an understanding of how the electronic media function in society and the skills needed to work in the broadcast media. This knowledge and training is the foundation for careers in news, promotion, program production, writing, audience research, management, and sales. Students normally take 50 percent of their course work in the liberal arts. These courses in history, literature, computer science, social sciences, and natural sciences are usually taken in the first two years. Students begin their specific broadcast curriculum with an introductory examination of the mass media, a course that provides an overview of the social, political, economic, and historical factors that affect all media in our society. A course in media ethics concentrates on fairness and accuracy in reporting. Other courses deal with such subfields as broadcast news, program production, and sales.
