102. Telescope
Unfortunately the telescopes built on Lippershey s model had poor image quality, caused by the bending of light though the glass lenses.
http://www.yesmag.bc.ca/how_work/telescope.html
This page is no longer being maintained but is left here as a service to those who have links to it.
How Does That Work?
The Telescope: A Bit of History
In 1608, a Dutch eyeglass maker named Hans Lippershey looked at a church steeple through two lenses placed one in front of the other and saw that the image was magnified. Unfortunately the telescopes built on Lippershey's model had poor image quality, caused by the bending of light though the glass lenses. (Glass does not bend the different colors of light equally. Red light is bent the least causing a colour distortion in the image.) Isaac Newton eventually solved this problem in 1668 by making a telescope that worked with mirrors instead of lenses.
Galileo Galilei was the first person to use the telescope to seriously study the heavens. Galileo was able to see that the moon was not smooth, but covered with huge valleys and craters. He discovered four moons orbiting Jupiter and found out that Venus has phases just like the moon. He realized that this must mean that Venus, and the other planets, revolve around the sun not around the earth, as many people believed at the time. In 1610 Galileo published a book about what he had seen through his telescope. Starry Messenger became the seventeenth-century equivalent of a bestseller. Not bad!

THE PHYSICS OF TELESCOPES
As of recently, astronomy has become a big part of my life. With astronomy, of course, comes the desire to spend hours gazing at the stars. You can do this with just your eyes or a good pair of binoculars, but if you really want to see the sights of the universe, a telescope is an essential tool to have.
Like everything else in this world, telescopes are all about physics. The systems of mirrors and lenses that are contained in them can be understood with some very basic knowledge about optics, which this page is intended to provide. Anyone who owns a telescope should understand the optics that it uses, and even those who don't own one could probably benefit from such an explanation. There are three main types of telescopes. First (and most important, in my humble opinion), is the reflecting telescope. (Trust me. You will get sick of hearing about them.) Acting somewhat as the opposite of the reflecting are the refracting telescopes, and the third kind, the catadioptric telescope, is kind of a combination of the first two. Reflecting telescopes (once again, in my opinion), have the best of the three general optics systems. (It could be argued that the catadioptric models are best, but again, this is

It is based at the ESO Headquarters in Garching, Germany.
The VLT Project
The ESO Very Large Telescope will consist of four 8-meter telescopes which can work independently or in combined mode. In this latter mode the VLT provides the total light collecting power of a 16 meter single telescope, making it the largest optical telescope in the world. The four 8-m telescopes supplemented with 3 auxilliary 1 m telescopes may also be used in interferometric mode providing high angular resolution imaging. The useful wavelength range extends from the near UV up to 25 microns in the infrared. The Paranal Observatory is located on Cerro Paranal in the Atacama Desert, northern Chile. Science operation with the first unit telscope (UT1) is scheduled for the first half of 1999. Full operations of all telescopes is expected shortly after the turn of the century. Giant Magellan Telescope
The partners of the Magellan Telescope Consortium are developing a next generation optical/IR telescope The Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT). The primary will consist of seven 8.4m diameter mirrors. The telescope will have the resolving power of a filled aperture 24.5 meters in diameter and will have 10 times the collecting area of each of the Magellan 6.5m telescopes. Magellan Project Telescopes The Magellan Project is a collaboration between the Observatories, the University of Arizona, Harvard University, University of Michigan, and MIT to construct two 6.5 Meter optical telescopes in the southern hemisphere. The telescopes are located at Las Campanas Observatory, Chile, and operated by OCIW. First light for the Walter Baade telescope occurred on September 15, 2000. The Landon Clay telescope started science operations on September 7, 2002.

    HOW DOES A TELESCOPE WORK
Astronomers use telescopes to focus and collect electromagnetic radiation from cosmic sources.
    • Most people are only familiar with optical telescopes, that is telescopes that detect radiation in the visible spectrum. BUT....
    • Since gamma-rays, x-rays, radio waves, infrared waves and ultraviolet waves are also forms of electromagnetic radiation, telescopes can also be designed to detect those waves.
Optical telescopes make use of either lenses or mirrors to focus the incoming optical light waves.
    • A refracting telescope uses lenses. Because big lenses are expensive and difficult to build and then support as part of a telescope, the refractor design is not commonly used for large telescopes today. Refractors also suffer from chromatic aberration, because different wavelengths do not all focus to the same point.
    • A reflecting telescope uses mirrors to bend and focus the light rays.
Radio telescopes reflect and focus radio waves similarly; they are all reflecting telescopes of one design or another.
    • The Green Bank Telescope will be a fully steerable paraboloid, with an offset feed allowing an unblocked aperture.
