Lizard Classifications - Families
A natural classification system was devised by Carl Linnaeus in the late eighteenth century. The classification system is a way of arranging plants and animals into groups based on differences and similarities between them. These groups start out as one big group, the phylum , and then are broken down into smaller groups all the way down to the individual animal, or species . The first groups the phylum is broken into are classes . Lizards belong in a large class of animals called Reptilia . The class is then broken into several orders and the lizards belong to the order called Squamata . Snakes and amphibians also belong to this order. The majority of lizards then fall into the suborder called Lacertilia This is where we start with our table below. The suborders are broken into families . Most families are groups of varied lizards tied together by anatomical similarities. There are approximately 19 groups or families (a couple have sub-families under the family ) containing several genera or genus . Each genus contains one or more species , the species being the individual animal. Many, though not all, of the more common species are listed in the right hand column of this table.

"Tegus........The Bigger Lizards of the New World" by:The Nikster (Tegu- large voracious predator lizard from South America) Common Names: Black and White Tegu, Gold Tegu, and Red Tegu Scientific Name: Tupinambis Tegiuxin Class: Reptile Species: Teguixin Family: Tejidae Genus: Tupinambis Distribution: North and Central South America Natural Habitat: Thin forests with heavy underbrush. Size: Total length: 48 inches; Head - torso length: 20 inches. Males tend to be larger than females. Temperament: Some are very aggressvie and will bite, others can be tamed as they grow. Husbandary: Recomened minimun 55 gallon aquarium for an adult male and two females. Shredded pine bedding is an excellent substrate for the aquarium. (You should cover the bottom of the aquarium in a depth of 4-5 inches, giving the lizards room to burrow.) Put in a few rocks or ruff objects to rub against when shedding. Also you should provide a water dish big enough for the lizards to lay in. Tegus love water. Characteristics: Tegus, like humans, are active during the day and rest at night. They are ground dwelling lizards that live in the ground or under fallen trees. They love to swim and to dig. Tegus have a cleff tounge and a Jacobson's organ in thier mouth like many snakes. Feeding: Little ones should be feed a variety of insects. Older ones should be feed mice and other small rodents. All lizards love eggs well done. There is also a high quality brand of canned dog food. This is a good supplement.

The tegu lizard is known for estivating the year for months during the dry ratewhich turn less sensitive to temperature change compared to active lizards.

H O accumulation and elevated temperatures cause oxidative stress in Antarctic coastal environments.
Abele, Doris Alfred-Wegener Institute, 27568 Bremerhaven. Due to the large solar zenith angle and the screening effect of the ozone layer, UV surface radiation over Antarctica ranges low during most of the year. This changes dramatically with the onset of the southern spring ozone depletion (1), when the Antarctic ozone layer can diminish by two third and UV-B surface irradiance can reach levels comparable to a May situation in Germany (Abele, D., G.A. Ferreyra, I. Schloss, submitted). The extent to which this process affects organisms in coastal environments receives some concern. Less is know about indirect UV effects, i. e. an increased atmosphere to ocean wet and dry flux of reactive oxygen species. Especially wet deposition of snow results in considerable accumulation of H O We studied oxidative stress and antioxidant protection in the Antarctic intertidal limpet Nacella concinna , as an effect of temperature increments and H O exposure under controlled laboratory conditions. Elevated temperatures resulted in lipofuscin and neutral lipid accumulation, as well as lysosomal membrane destabilization in digestive gland cells. Activities of antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase, measured at the respective experimental temperature, increased in gills and digestive gland tissues. Unexpectedly, intracellular pH rose with rising temperature. H

ICFFCI Mailing List Format: Text HTML Cyclura.com n : Tegu is a Portuguese word, correctly spelled Teju, which means lizard. - © 1995 Zane Publishing, Inc. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary © 1994 by Merriam-Webster, Incorporated The family Tupinambis are large South American teiid lizards. Many people associate Tegus with monitors because of their size (which can be up to 4 feet in length), pointy nose, fork tongue and aggressiveness when consuming their food. When, in fact, they are much more closely related to skinks or lacertas lizards. One distinct difference between a monitor and a tegu is the ability a tegu has to regenerate a broken or damaged tail. Tegus originate from Argentina and Columbia. The difference between the two species groups include scale and temperament differences. The Argentine tegu has two loreal scales on the front of the snout, where the Colombian tegu only has one; the Argentine tegu seems to be calmer and more easily tamed that those from Columbia. The species is called out by color definitions: Tupinamis duseni T. nigropunctatus
