While not the longest or most massive of the Tegus, it is still a relatively large lizard. The Colombian Black and White Tegu should not be confused with the Argentine Black and White Tegu, also called the Giant Tegu, a closely related species that is much more rare in captivity. The Colombian Black and White Tegu is a tropical South American lizard. Though they are considered a terrestrial species, they are adept climbers and swimmers - fast and agile in the trees, on the ground, and in the water. Colombian Black and White Tegus are primarily carnivorous and will feed on a variety of things, including insects, bird eggs, small birds and mammals, and amphibians; and some will occasionally eat plant material. When the Tegu is feeling threatened it will raise its body up while breathing deeply and loudly and inflating itself with air, so that it will appear larger and more threatening. It may also raise its tail off the ground in preparation to whip the attacker. The Colombian Black and White Tegu is a relatively aggressive lizard, and if its defensive displays fail, it will not hesitate to bite and whip its potential attacker.

This species should not be confused with the much more common Black and White Tegu from Columbia. The Giant Tegus are one of the easiest tegus to handle and, if raised from a juvenile, can be quite docile and calm. They are versatile animals that can tolerate both hot and cold temperatures. The Black and White Tegu is quite common in Argentina. When used to humans, they are quite easy to handle and rarely skittish.

Common Name: Columbian Tegu Latin name: Tupinambis teguixin Native to: Can be found throughout the Amazon Basin, especially Columbia Size: Adults reach between 3 and 3.5 feet in length and usually weighs about 8 pounds. Life span: 5-8 years General appearance: The common tegu has black and white stripes or spots with smooth scales and are similar in build to monitor species. Care should be taken to not confuse the Columbian black and white tegu with the Argentine black and white tegu ( T. merianae ). The Argentine tegu is larger and (reaching up to 4.5 feet in length) and often have a more distinctive striped pattern. Tegus should not be confused as monitors, which are strictly and old world species. Tegus fill the same ecological niche as monitors and are an example of convergent evolution. Housing requirements: Enclosure: Adult Columbian tegus require a large enclosure. Generally the enclosure should be at least six feet in length and three feet in width. These lizards are primarily terrestrial and do not necessarily require a large vertical space to climb. A good general rule of thumb for an enclosure should be twice the length of the animal in length and the length of the animal in width. Tegus enjoy soaking and the occasional swim, so a large water dish that they can soak themselves should be provided. A hide box should also be provided at all times.

Captive Care of the Tegu Lizard by Lenny Flank, Jr. Are you an experienced herper looking for an interesting, colorful and active lizard to add to your collection? If so, then the Latin American Tegu may be for you. Tegus are members of the Teiid family of lizards and are closely related to the North American Whiptails (Cnemidophorus species) and the Latin American Jungle Runners (Amieva species). In appearence and habits, the Tegus mimic the African and Asian Monitor Lizards, to which they are not closely related. This is an example of what biologists refer to as "convergent evolution", in which organisms from different groups evolve towards the same body plan and habits in response to similar environmental niches. Taxonomically, the Tegus are the subject of much debate. There are at least three recognized species of Tegu. The most highly prized is the Red Tegu, Tupinambis rufescens, which is found in the northern part of Argentina. The Black and White Tegu, Tupinambis teguixin, is native to Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay (some taxonomists argue in favor of renaming this animal as T. merianae). It is not often seen in captivity. The common Tegu found on dealer lists is the Black Tegu, Tupinambis nigropunctatus (some taxonomists advocate dropping this name and replacing it with T. teguixin, which, they argue, has been incorrectly applied to the Argentine Black and White Tegu). The Black Tegu is found throughout the Amazon Basin. Finally, some taxonomists are advocating the creation of one (possibly two) new species, based on recent finds.

Ameivas
Ameiva ameiva . Also called Jungle Runner, Dwarf Tegu These colorful lizards are related to the tegu. Like the some of the tegus, they can be nervous and nippy, and some species are more aggressive than others. They need lots of room, more than their size would seem to indicate. They are quick and prone to flights of panic, at least until well acclimated. They are found in the tropical open forests, woodlands and agricultural areas. Like the other Teiids, they have the long pointed snout, long tongue and tail. Strong limbs and long claws. Like their tegu cousins, they are diurnal, omnivorous and oviparous. Similar to the Racerunners ( Cnemidorphorus spp.) but have longer snouts than racerunners. These are active lizards, diggers and burrowers, so need a spacious enclosure with deep substrate layer, hide boxes. Some may make use of some low climbing branches or bark slabs for basking. Males typically have turquoise blue bellies; females white. Older males develop the characteristic thick jowls.
