The Parent and Teen Polls are run continuously at this site and results are posted quarterly. Both parents and teens/preteens vote for "issues" as well as for "areas of satisfaction" in their relationships. HERE ARE THE RESULTS OF THE "ISSUES" POLL FOR TEENS Click here to see "the good stuff" poll results
(areas of satisfaction in relationship with parents) Interpreting the chart: Main finding:
When teens and preteens were asked to vote for their 'top 3' issues with their parents (from many possible choices),
  • Parents worry about me too much came in first,
  • Boyfriend/Girlfriend issues came in second, and
  • Parents don't respect me, treat me like a child came in third.
so these are the TOP 3 ISSUES among teens/preteens responding to this poll. "Rules are unfair" came in fourth. These results are ALMOST identical to those of the Teen Poll for the prior quarte r.

The Parent and Teen Polls are run continuously at this site and results are posted quarterly. Both parents and teens/preteens vote for "issues" as well as for " areas of satisfaction " in their relationships. Interpreting the chart: Main finding:
When teens and preteens were asked to vote for their 'top 3' issues with their parents, approximately 10% of all the votes cast were cast for each of the following three issues:
  • Parents worry about me too much
  • Boyfriend/Girlfriend issues
  • Chores
so these are the TOP 3 ISSUES among teens/preteens responding to this poll. "Academics" and "my attitude-lack of respect" each received 9% of the total votes cast. "Parents don't respect me, treat me like a child" followed, with 8.2% of all of the votes, and "my moodiness" received 7.6%. Use of emergency contraceptive pills (ECP) is a method of preventing pregnancy after unprotected intercourse, when regular contraception fails, or when a woman fears that her regular contraception may have failed. ECP is not the only method of emergency contraception available in the United States, but it is the method most commonly recommended for teenage women. As such, ECP is an option that could annually avert as many as 50 percent of pregnancies and consequent abortions among American teens. ECP cannot cause abortion because the pills have no effect after a pregnancy is established. Although some doctors have been prescribing ECP for over 30 years, relatively few adolescents know about the use of oral contraceptives as emergency contraception. Fewer than one-third of teen females have heard of ECP or are aware that they can do anything to prevent pregnancy after sexual intercourse. Only 40 percent of teens who know about ECP also understand that the pills should be taken after, and not before, unprotected sex. Although teen females are slightly more likely than males to know when ECP should be taken (43 percent versus 37 percent, respectively)

The Stay Connected resources were designed to enhance parent-teen relationships. These resources include a parent-teen activity series and a parent-teen communication video series. The Stay Connected Activity/Education Series includes activities that can be done at home, at an installation, or in the community. The Stay Connected Video Series contains short messages about the importance of maintaining the connections between parents and their teens, which can be used to stimulate discussion about parent-teen relationships. Please read the Introduction to these resources. Activities and Resources
  • Activity/Education Series - Activities for parents and their teens including suggestions of different things families can do together, why the activities can strengthen or improve the parent-teen relationship, and things to consider when doing these activities.
    Postcard Series
    - Offers a short synopsis of each activity in the form of a tip of the months, which can be distributed directly to families or professionals working with families.
    Video Series and Process Questions
    - These video clips and process questions were developed to help professionals working with families start group discussions. Some questions focus on issues pertaining to the topic presented in the video, while other questions provide the opportunity to think about a different perspective, such as a parent's perspective or a teen's perspective on the same topic. Additionally, these questions might help parents start discussions with their teens without the involvement of a facilitator.

Teen Health Issues and Concerns
Health is a very complicated thing, and includes all the organs of the body, the brain, how you feel about yourself and the rest of the world, how much social support you have, and how you treat your body. It is so complicated that we cannot tell you everything there is to know, but we can provide some basic information that we believe is important for teens and parents to know.
The message we give to teens is that there are adults in their life who can answer questions and help them. We encourage them to talk to parents, a school counselor, extended family members like aunts or uncles, and their doctor about any worries they have about their.

Return to: Table of Contents News and Views Home News and Views Reviews: Books The Inside Story on Teen Girls Reviewed by Karin Scheetz, M.A, Loyola College, Baltimore, MD The Inside Story on Teen Girls This book is meant to be used by teenage girls and their parents, both mothers and fathers. It can be useful to just about anyone who cares for or works with teenage girls. It is written in such a way that teenage girls of almost any age would likely find questions that apply to them, and answers that make sense. The answers are presented in a clear and straightforward way without using technical psychological terminology. This is the case for both sides of this book; however, the authors did use appropriate language and writing style for each of the target audiences. This book was not written to address the issues of teenage boys, so it would not be an appropriate book to assist in their adolescent difficulties. The Inside Story There are very few limitations I can come up with on this book. The authors do an excellent job of providing answers without telling the teens or their parents what to do. However, it seems as though some more guided tasks or activities that the teen and her parents can use may be sought by those reading the book. A workbook would be a perfect accompaniment to this wonderful book and would provide even more utility to its use as a bibliotherapy tool. One other limitation may be with severely dysfunctional families. This book seems to be more suited toward typical adolescent difficulties and may not be suitable for more serious adolescent and family problems.
