Teen Pregnancy
Teenage pregnancy is one of the most difficult experiences a young woman like you might ever face. Ashamed and scared at this point, it is almost natural to crumble under the pressure from your boyfriend, who has either left you or is just hanging around for your decision. The stress of how you are going to break this news to your parents might be even greater, especially if they raised you with certain morals.
You might think no one can help you, and you might also be too embarrassed to search for help. However, denying your pregnancy or ignoring it can only make things worse for you and your baby. Denial will not take the pregnancy away, instead, you will lose the time you could have invested in prenatal care and counseling.

Study Finds Teen Pregnancy and Crime Levels are Higher Among Kids from Fatherless Homes
Children reared in fatherless homes are more than twice as likely to become male adolescent delinquents or teen mothers, according to a significant new study by two economists at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Llad Phillips and William S. Comanor based their research on data from random surveys of 15,000 youths conducted annually by the Center for Human Resources at Ohio State University. Their findings suggest that current proposals to provide tax credits and exemptions for single mothers and to collect more child support from absent fathers will have little effect on the problem of delinquency among teenage boys.

Teen Pregnancy
An American Dilemma Testimony before the House of Representatives, Committee on Small Business, Subcommittee on Empowerment, Washington, DC, July 16, 1998 David Popenoe Throughout the history of the world, until the modern era, teen pregnancies were the norm. When a young girl became sexually mature she was married off and soon accomplished that for which she is biologically designed, giving birth to the next generation. Teen pregnancies are still the norm in much of the developing world. Each child born to a young girl normally is considered a blessing. But in the developed nations the situation is different. The networks to help the teen mothers, composed of grandmothers, large, extended families, intimate neighborhoods, and working fathers, are seldom in existence. More importantly, women are expected to become educated and, for many, have secure employment before they bear children. Education is considered to be a necessity for living in a complex, information-rich society, and young women today are involved in the work force at about the same rate as young men. Under modern conditions, teen pregnancies are considered not a blessing but a curse. This is so because most of the children of these pregnancies will grow up fatherless and at high risk themselves for various social and behavioral problems, the education and work lives of their mothers will be seriously impaired, and the welfare and social costs to the nation will be great.

Introduction
The United States has the highest teen pregnancy rate of any industrialized country, and California continues to have one of the highest teen pregnancy rates in the nation. Although the overall rate of teen pregnancy has been declining since 1991, the rates have remained high for teens who are most vulnerable, such as younger unmarried teens. The national unmarried teen birth rate steadily decreased from 62 in 1991 to 54 births per 1,000 females in 1996a 12% decline. The teen birth rate decreased among all races (Annie E. Casey Foundation, 1998). Comparable to the rest of the nation, California's teen pregnancy rates have also decreased since 1991 by 16%. In 1996, the teen birth rate was 63 births per 1000 females. Although the teen (ages 15-19) birth rate in California has also decreased among all races since 1991, Hispanic teens showed the smallest decrease, from 122 in 1991 to 104 births per 1,000 females in 1996a 15% decline. This is compared to a 23% decrease in African Americans and a 24% decrease in Non-Hispanic Whites (Annie E. Casey Foundation, 1998).

Welfare Reform and Reducing Teen Pregnancy
The Public Interest , Winter 2000
Isabel V. Sawhill
Senior Fellow , Economic Studies Program Almost no one thinks it's a good idea for unwed teenagers to become parents. It would be the odd parent, indeed, who counseled their own teenage son or daughter to start a family, Most parents hope that their children will finish school, find a job, and marry before they take on the burdens of parenthood. But what the majority of parents, almost regardless of race or social class, want for their own children is not what we have. Instead, 40 percent of all girls in the United States become pregnant before their twentieth birthday, and one out of every five goes on to become a teen mother. The overwhelming majority of these young mothers are unmarried and end up poor and on welfare. Certainly, recent social trends are encouraging. Teen pregnancy rates have declined -almost as sharply during the 1990's as they had increased in the preceding two decades. And for the first time, teen birth rates are dropping not because more teens tire having abortions but because fewer of them are getting pregnant in the first place. Also available:
the Brookings Roundtable on Children
These recent declines auger well for the future, but it is worth remembering that teenage pregnancy rates in America are still at least twice as high as in other industrialized countries and about as high as they were in the early 1970s. About half of these pregnancies tire carried to term while the remainder either end with a miscarriage or are terminated by an abortion. Very few teen mothers put their babies up for adoption, or marry the baby's father, a marked departure from practices 30 or 40 years ago.

Overview People's Organization of Robbins Youth Service (POR) was established in 1982 as a community-based voluntary organization serving the Village of Robbins, Illinois. Through community concern (high water rates) this organization was formed and in 1985 chartered itself as the People's Organization of Robbins Youth Service Project. Poorness focus is to provide new services and programs for youth 5-17 years of age. Dedication to this cause is very important in the community of Robbins due to the lack of financial benefits in the local environment. POR recognizes these problems and others which youth must endure and pledges its united efforts for a better community. POR operates with the assistance of the Chicago Area Project, fundraisers, and donations. Return to the top Intergenerational activities, crafts and teen leadership projects are stressed by People's Organization of Robbins Youth Service (POR).

Teenage Pregnancy and the Midwife Exhuming the Social Exclusion Report
Alison Perry "So, in this case," I, the student midwife asked, "who will talk to her about contraception?" "Oh, I don't know.." pondered the midwife from the Neonatal Unit as we drove away. "I suppose someone should, really, shouldn't they?" Having been ready to rattle off the pros and cons of implants versus barriers, I wondered why it wouldn't be us... In the distant wake of the findings of the Social Exclusion Unit (1999), much political and media attention has been paid to the issue of teenage pregnancy. Perhaps this should have begun a timely inauguration of midwives extended involvement with young people in the community, as well as reinforcing our commitment to the pregnant women with whom we already work. However, it is important first to grasp that the extended role of the midwife in sex education is only a part of the solution to teenage pregnancy. Indeed, to equate contraceptive information giving by midwives with the eradication of teenage pregnancy is to miss the complexities of the issue, the intricacies of which far exceed the scope of this article. This article will instead touch upon the issues which characterise teenage preg-nancy in this country, while factoring in the potential role of the midwife.
Society's attitude
Teenage pregnancy itself is perceived by our society as a deviation from normal. It has been placed alongside drug abuse and crime on Government initiative agendas (Mowlam, 2000; Gilham, 1997). This overt pathologisation reinforces a culture of disapproval of teenage pregnancy; having babies when you are young is seen as a bad thing (Baker, 1999). It is ironic that having babies during the time that doctors insist is the optimal time physiologically (aged 18-25) no longer coincides with society's more modem priorities and expectations. These include education, career life, and experience. Indeed, the time at which individual women have babies is very much influenced by complex factors involving both their particular social class and culture.

Teen Pregnancy Prevention: Program Overview
Why does teen pregnancy prevention and sexually transmitted infections (STI) matter to the Louisiana Department of Education? One reason is that adolescent childbearing and STIs carry significant social and human costs. These costs are born by the teens, by society as a whole, and - perhaps most significantly- by the children of teen mothers, who suffer higher rates of poverty, abuse, and birth defects. Beyond the social implications are the financial ones. Because of high poverty levels, the complex social, emotional, and medical needs of underserved adolescents continue to hamper efforts for academic success for all students. It should be noted that teen mothers are unlikely to finish high school and prone to depending on welfare for survival.
In an effort to reduce the number and percentage of pregnant and parenting teens in Louisiana, the Department of Education has embarked on an aggressive, comprehensive youth program that includes the faithful implementation of research-based program components. The Department hopes to accomplish this goal by providing funding to organizations that institute programs following these objectives:
1.) To delay initial sexual experiences among teens;

U.S. teen pregnancy rate hit record low in 1997
HAYATTSVILLE, Maryland (CNN) America's teen-agers were less likely to become pregnant in 1997 than at any time since 1976, when national data first became available, a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Tuesday. Still, the United States has the highest teen pregnancy rate of any Western industrialized country. The teen pregnancy rate fell 19 percent from its high in 1991 to a record low of 94.3 pregnancies per 1,000 women ages 15-19 in 1997, the latest year for which data are available, the report said. "The fact that fewer teens are becoming pregnant is encouraging news," said Dr. Jeffrey P. Koplan, CDC director. "Few teens are ready for the challenges of parenthood. When they delay this responsibility it enables them to gain the education and maturity they need to be good parents and good citizens." The rate had risen from the mid-1980s and peaked in 1991; the 1997 rate is 10 percent below the 1986 rate, when the upturn began.
