    Experimenting
Teens try alcohol, cigarettes, chemicals (inhalants), and other drugs for many of the same reasons that adults use them, to relax or feel good. However, teens also have other reasons for drug use , such as rebelling against their parents or seeking acceptance from their peers. Often, the first substance used by a teen is alcohol or cigarettes, and many times these substances are obtained from the teen's own home. Some parents expect and encourage experimentation with these substances because at least the teen is not using "drugs." However, these substances are considered gateway drugs because they can lead to the use of other drugs. A national study found that teens who:
    • Smoke cigarettes or drink alcohol are 7 times more likely to use illegal drugs than teens who do not smoke or drink.

Treatment professionals have only recently recognized that substance-abuse treatment programs for adolescents cannot simply be scaled-down versions of adult programs. Adolescents are not simply "little adults." Unlike their adult counterparts, adolescents in treatment have more family difficulties, are more likely to have psychological problems, and are more likely to have attempted suicide. Their alcohol and drug-use patterns are also different. Teens tend to abuse multiple substances, while adults are more singular in their focus. The path to hitting a "bottom" is also different. For adults, entry into treatment is usually heralded by loss of job and/or family, chronic medical problems, and/or encounters with the law. The "red flags" for adolescents are more subtle and revealed in school performance, peer relationships, and interactions within family of origin, as well as involvement with the judicial system.

Beat Their Butts Q: Is it possible to try drugs without becoming addicted? Some of my friends do X before a rave and they seem to have such a blast! I want to have the same good time but am scared of becoming addicted . My father is a recovering alcoholic and I know from Alateen that addiction runs in families. Is it OK to experiment just a little? A: There are lots of issues to address in this question, but I will start with the easiest part to answer. It seems you want somebody to tell you it is "OK" for you to try drugs, and I can't and won't do that. I will say that it is an unfortunate fact of the teen years that drug and/or alcohol experimentation is the norm , not the exception. For most

Jason and Brent have been best friends since kindergarten. Now that they're in high school, they seem to have drifted apart. It could be because they're in different classes, Brent thinks, but he's also noticed some unusual changes in Jason. His grades have slipped, he has extreme mood swings, and he doesn't even talk to his old friends anymore. Brent wonders if maybe Jason has been doing drugs. Maybe you know someone like Jason who's been using drugs, or maybe you're wondering whether that time you smoked weed at your cousin's party means that you have an addiction. Defining an addiction is tricky, and knowing how to handle one is even harder - keep reading to find out what you can do if you think you or a friend has a drug or alcohol addiction. What Are Abuse and Addiction?
Telling the difference between abuse and addiction is hard. Addiction begins as abuse , or usage of a substance like marijuana or cocaine. You can abuse a drug without having an addiction. For example, just because Sara smoked weed a few times doesn't mean that she has an addiction, but it does mean that she's abusing a drug - and that could lead to an addiction. Addiction means having no control over whether to use a drug. A person who's addicted to cocaine has grown so used to the drug that he

Teen Sex Addiction Sex addiction is not restricted to any age group, but it seems to often get rooted during the teen years. We wanted to address the teens out there in the hopes that they will join the growing numbers of people breaking free of addiction. This page is written primarily to teens who are interested in living to please God. If you do not know God, but are interested in learning about him, please visit our Peace with God page. The habits you form and the thought patterns you practice during your teen years are setting the foundations for the rest of your life. Pornography and other "sexually-charged" material cement unforgettable memories in your mind that will affect your future marriage and sex life. It will also corrupt your everyday thought patterns and how you relate to people. Other consequences can include:
    • Grieving God's Spirit Giving the devil a foothold to oppress you Curses on you, your partner and your future children Spiritual confusion Emotional confusion Unbridled pursuit of lust and perversion
These are just a few of the many possible consequences that could affect your body, mind and spirit. Please see

Teenagers and Drugs Teenagers may be involved with legal or illegal drugs in various ways. Experimentation with drugs during adolescence is common. Unfortunately, teenagers often don¹t see the link between their actions today and the consequences tomorrow. They also have a tendency to feel indestructible and immune to the problems that others experience. Using alcohol and tobacco at a young age increases the risk of using other drugs later. Some teens will experiment and stop, or continue to use occasionally, without significant problems. Others will develop a dependency, moving on to more dangerous drugs and causing significant harm to themselves and possibly others. Adolescence is a time for trying new things. Teens use drugs for many reasons, including curiosity, because it feels good, to reduce stress, to feel grown up or to fit in. It is difficult to know which teens will experiment and stop and which will develop serious problems. Am I At Risk?

Teen Information Many teens feel as if they are alone in their distress over gambling. This is not true! In fact, teenagers make up the second fastest growing age group of problem gamblers. If you are wondering if you are suffering from or may be developing a gambling problem, think about these questions or situations:
    • Does your group of friends gamble on various things, cards, dice, events, games, or on line sites? Has gambling become your favorite (or only) activity? Do you have trouble concentrating on homework or other things because you are thinking of gambling all the time? Have you ever gotten in trouble in school for gambling? Have you skipped school to gamble? Are you drinking alcohol or taking drugs? Have you missed important family events or snuck out of them to gamble? Do you like being the center of attention and enjoy talking or bragging about your winnings? Have you ever borrowed or stolen money to gamble?

Lisa Gorman Ninety percent of smokers begin smoking by the age of 19. Nicotine is considered the number one entrance into other substance abuse. Adolescents between the ages of 12 and 17 who smoke daily are 15 times more likely to use illicit drugs than their peers. Substance abuse is a learned behavior. Teens who begin smoking learn to use the substance. The earlier youth begin using tobacco, the more likely they will continue use into adulthood. Why is tobacco use addicting? The nicotine in tobacco acts as a stimulant, depressant, or tranquilizer depending on the dosage. An individual builds up tolerance to tobacco use, requiring larger doses to maintain a certain physiological effect. When the body becomes accustomed to the presence of nicotine, it then requires the chemical to function normally. This level of dependence is referred to as an addiction. Teens who are addicted to tobacco have several common experiences. A number of them tried their first cigarette in the sixth or seventh grade. Smokers often do not perform well at school. They do not feel they are a part of school and are isolated from those students who are active in sports. Most of the smokers feel they have little hope of going to college or getting a good job after high school. They also report addictions to other substances, such as alcohol. They experience pressure from home and school, and use tobacco as a form of relief. In addition, teen smokers enjoy trying to hide their smoking or outwit school administration. This has made school more fun for some tobacco users.
