Strong Maternal Bond Effective in Preventing Teen Addiction

The international study involved 4,000 teenagers in England, Ireland, Italy, Germany, and the Netherlands. The participants were questioned about their use of marijuana, amphetamines, ecstasy, LSD, tranquilizers, and alcohol. In addition, the teens were asked to complete questionnaires that asked about their relationships with their parents and grandparents, the extent of their supervision after school, and whether they were allowed to meet friends at home.
The researchers determined that the rate of alcohol and other drug use among teens living with both parents and having a good relationship with their mother was 16.6 percent. If either factor was missing, the rate increased to 32 percent.
The study further showed that more than 42 percent of teens living with one parent and lacking a strong relationship with their mother used alcohol or other drugs.

The Medical Journal, Dagens Medicin, claims that more than one in ten of all convicted juvenile criminals in this country are suffering from such severe psychological trauma as a result of alcohol or drug abuse that they are unable to serve their sentence in juvenile remand centres, and are instead being placed in mental hospitals. The journal claims that kids as young as 12 years of age are often hooked on hash, alcohol, magic mushrooms or amphetamines. Back Top

By Timothy C. Morgan Last year, a 19-year-old youth from a small Iowa town, unable to face his large gambling losses, penned a short note, saying, "I'm out of control." Then he killed himself. Last spring, three New Jersey high-schoolers were arrested for running a $6,500 per week sports betting operation. In another case, a 16-year-old paid off his gambling debts by turning his girlfriend into a prostitute. These and other published accounts illustrate how exorbitant a price American teens are paying for our ill-fated social experiment with legal gambling.

Local News Juvenile Court Journal: State law is helping families struggling with teen addiction One In An Occasional Series Sunday, March 24, 2002 By Barbara White Stack, Post-Gazette Staff Writer As the sickness subsided, 17-year-old Wayne Carelli noticed scars on his legs where he'd scratched himself raw and black blotches at his ankles. He hoped the discoloration was dirt. He tried scrubbing it off in the shower. But the stains from heroin use don't wash away that easily. Four years ago, Wayne Carelli, 17, began abusing heroin. Now he's in treatment and staying at the O.U.R. House in East Liberty, where his mother, Marilyn, and other family members attend regular therapy sessions. The drug also tarnished Wayne in ways he can't see. Now he's the youth whom frightened parents warn their teen-agers to avoid. His own mother and father don't trust him and sleep with the cash and keys in their pajamas.

Denny Wayman, pastor of the Free Methodist Church of Santa Barbara (CA), recently created an excellent resource to be shared with other Free Methodists. Based on The Selfish Brain: Learning from Addiction by Robert L. Dupont, M.D., Wayman constructed a PowerPoint presentation and handout that highlight the many different substances (drugs, alcohol, nicotine, pornography, etc.) that cause addiction, their effects on the brain (right down to the transmitters) and steps for recognizing and intervening against high-risk behavior.

I also did OxyContin and I am celebrating two years [of being drug-free]," said a 22-year-old Somerville resident, facing about a 400-strong audience last week. "I started drinking and drugs in this high school. I know people who got addicted and died," said Kevin. "I am a drug addict, and I began in elementary school," said Richie, a Somerville High graduate. What began as an informational service for the city became akin to a AA meeting when residents and students and came up to the front of the auditorium and spoke about their addictions on April 14 at the Somerville High School.
