True Stories of Teen Addiction
Two women who hit rock-bottom are climbing back up. As told to Kathleen Jacobs What's your image of a drug user? Probably not the easygoing girl next door or a busy mom of two. You might be surprised to learn who is secretly fighting the lure of drugs. Consider the facts: An estimated 14 million Americans currently use illicit drugs, according to the most recent National Household Survey by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The same research found that 9.5% of teen girls use drugs and more than 30% of all women (ages 12 and up) say that they have tried drugs at some point. Just like Zoey in our new Lifetime movie, many young women start dabbling with addictive substances as a way to deal with the pressures of their teen years. "We cannot predict who uses drugs," says Terry Horton, M.D., medical director at Phoenix House, a national substance abuse treatment program. For some, their abuse will persist with serious consequences. But there is hope. A five-year study by SAMHSA determined that treatment reduces illicit drug use by 43%. Longer periods of treatment can improve the odds. Still, the most important factors in successful recovery, says Dr. Horton, are family support and involvement. Meet two women who overcame their addictions and are rebuilding their lives.
Vicki H., 39, lives in Lexington, Kentucky, with her two children. Drug-free for nine years, she has a master's degree in social work and is employed at Chrysalis House, a long-term residential substance abuse and alcohol rehabilitation center. This is her story:

Among some of the reports findings:
  • A rise in mobile phone use during the late 1990s coincided with a decline in smoking among 15-year-olds. The prevalence of smoking fell to 23% in 1999 from 30% in 1996, the same year mobile phone use skyrocketed among 15- to 17-year-olds
"We hypothesise that the fall in youth smoking and the rise in ownership of mobile phones among adolescents are related," the authors write. They suggest that many teens cannot afford to sustain both habits and prefer the cutting-edge technology over the smoking.

One of the causes of teenage addiction most commonly cited by health specialists is the tendency of young people to underestimate the risk of dependence associated with drug experimentation. According to these experts, teenagers on the verge of adulthood are naturally prone to engage in risky behavior. Smoking, drinking, and drug use may seem “adult” to youths who are not mature enough to understand that such behavior poses a threat to their health and well-being, argue the specialists. Many teenagers discover the risks of substance use only after suffering the adverse effects of addiction. Leah, a sixteen-year-old smoker from Washington, D.C., says she did not understand the dangers when she began smoking. She expresses an attitude typical among teens, saying, “When I first started [smoking] I figured, okay, one cigarette is not going to hurt me.” Leah admits that she is now addicted, and she confesses that she has tried to quit several times but has been unable to do so.

True Stories of Teen Addiction
Two women who hit rock-bottom are climbing back up. (Continued from page 1. Stacey Beck, 26, a former administrative assistant, is from Bayshore, Long Island in New York. She currently lives in Phoenix House, a drug treatment facility, and spends weekends with her family. This is her story:
Now I've been here a year, and I'm in the final phase of treatment. It's called reentry, and I'm going to get a job and pay off my debts. I still think about drugs, but I have to be stronger. I learned that you can do things sober and still have fun, such as going dancing or eating out. I play volleyball. I go to NA [Narcotics Anonymous]. I keep occupied to stay strong. I never thought I'd be able to get this far. I figured I'd be on drugs the rest of my life. I feel good now; I'm proud of myself. I was even asked to speak at a fund-raiser. Afterward, a woman told me that my story was inspiring. I felt so good that day. I felt as if I had finally accomplished something.

Arterburn, Stephen Our Price: $5.99 See Description Most adults know that tobacco use is addictive and dangerous, yet many fail to confront their teens because of their own smoking habits. Some rationalize that tobacco is not as dangerous as other drugs. They are wrong. Smoking can destroy a healthy body and can lead to other substance abuse. Janice knew Melinda had no idea how addictive nicotine is. She had watched her father try to quit smoking for 40 years without success. Later that week, after hours of prayer, reflection, and research, Janice wrote the following letter to Melinda: Dear Melinda: I am writing this letter because I love you. You are a beautiful young woman with a strong, healthy body. I have prayed for you since before you were born. I have done everything in my power to keep you safe and healthy. I cannot now allow you to hurt yourself with tobacco. Most adult smokers started smoking as teenagers. Even though tobacco companies deny they target teens, teenagers are their most important customers. In fact, according to some estimates, more than 3,000 teenagers in the United States become regular smokers every day.

Excerpts from: Teen Addiction to Nicotine Hard to Measure By Andrew Holtz, Reuters [08/10/00 CHICAGO (Reuters Health) - In order to battle teen smoking, it is important to know when teenage smokers cross over from
experimentation to tobacco dependence or addiction; but that point is hard to determine, according to presentations made here
Wednesday at the 11th World Conference on Tobacco OR Health. Dr. Raymond Niaura of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, pointed out that just because a teenager smokes does
not mean he or she is dependent on tobacco or nicotine. ``One potential problem with tobacco use as a marker for dependence is that patterns of use by adolescents are remarkably
variable and unstable, difficult to measure with fine degrees of precision and may not be of great prognostic value in terms of
predicting future entrenched tobacco involvement,'' he explained.

    Read More Adolescent Substance Abuse
B eing a teenager and raising a teenager are individually, and collectively, enormous challenges. For many teens, illicit substance use and abuse become part of the landscape of their teenage years. Although most adolescents who use drugs do not progress to become drug abusers, or drug addicts in adulthood, drug use in adolescence is a very risky proposition. Even small degrees of substance abuse (for example, alcohol, marijuana, and inhalants) can have negative consequences. Typically, school and relationships, notably family relationships, are among the life areas that are most influenced by drug use and abuse. One of the most telling signs of a teen's increasing involvement with drugs is when drug use becomes part of the teen's daily life. Preoccupation with drugs can crowd out previously important activities, and the manner in which the teen views him or her self may change in unrealistic and inaccurate directions. Friendship groups may change, sometimes dramatically, and relationships with family members can become more distant or conflictual. Further bad signs include more frequent use or use of greater amounts of a certain drug, or use of more dangerous drugs, such as cocaine, amphetamines, or heroin. Persistent patterns of drug use in adolescence are a sign that problems in that teen's environment exist and need to be addressed immediately.
