Consider How You Are Perceived, Not Just What You Say
by Peter Zvalo The interviewee entered her prospective manager’s office, eager to answer the questions that she knew would soon be fired at her. Shelley had been through this process a dozen times in the past few months as part of her quest for a technical writing position, and could anticipate the line of questioning. Far from being nervous, she was calm and confident. Phil, the manager, was also well versed in the interview process. Having hired many people during his career, he knew the type of person he was looking to hire. During an interview, his mind would usually be made up within the first few minutes about whether the candidate would get a second interview or would end up having to continue his or her search. After Shelley and Phil were seated, Phil began: Phil: "So, how are you today?" Shelley: "Oh, pretty good. I’d be even better if the weather wasn’t so miserable again today." Phil: "Indeed. But at least it’s better than last week’s snow. So, what attracted you to our job ad?"

How To Break into Technical Writing
Whether you're attempting to become a technical writer at 21 or 41, the steps are the same. Statistics show that the best way to find a job is network, network, network. Go to association meetings, like STC (Society for Technical Communication) (www.stc-va.org/home.html) (International Office: 703.522.4114; Email: stc@stc-va.org) and talk to as many people as you can. Introduce yourself and tell them honestly what you want. Ask them a lot of questions about how they did it. Everyone started somewhere. Find out which companies tend to hire the more junior or intern writers or editors/proofreaders. Ask each person you speak to for another referral. You're looking for direct job leads or information that could lead you to a job. Look at it as solving a mystery. Just keep talking to people. Even once you begin calling companies direct, ask for other leads. People have friends who have moved on to other companies.
Company Research
Identify which companies you'd ideally like to work for by going to the library, going online or using one of many other resources, such as Hoover's Database (www.hoovers.com) or Thomas Register (www.thomasregister.com) or CorpTech (www.corptech.com) or Upside Magazine (www.upside.com) or Red Herring Magazine (www.redherring.com).

Some Advice on Writing a Technical Report
Alan T. Sherman
DRAFT: April 27, 1996
The Technical Report (TR) is a common written form through which computer scientist communicate their findings. Each TR should have a focused topic that is developed logically along some clearly identified perspective. The major components of a TR are title, author information, date, keywords, informative abstract, body, acknowledgments, references, and appendices. Typically, the body is organized into four sections: motivation, methods, results, and discussion. This document offers advice and specifications for writing TRs.
Overview
Communicating results is a crucial aspect of doing research. Through such communication other people can learn about and benefit from the findings. Often such communication includes a written document known as a Technical Report (TR) . The successful researcher must master this important written form. A TR should explain what you did, why you did it, what you discovered, and what is significant of your findings. The report should identify clearly what is novel about your work, and how it relates to prior knowledge. There should be a focused topic, and an attitude about this topic. The topic should be developed according to the attitude in a thorough, logical, and orderly fashion. Throughout, the author should be helpful to the reader. The report should include the following components: descriptive title, author name and affiliation, date, informative abstract, list of keywords, body, acknowledgments, and list of references. Additional separate appendices, where appropriate, may also be included. The standard four-part outline for the body of a technical report is motivation, methods, results, and discussion.

Technical Writing Technical Writing describes the marriage of literary talent with technology. In most markets today, products are becoming more sophisticated and their range of capabilities is expanding at a phenomenal pace. This rate of advancement, however, often outpaces the skill development of the intended customer or user, thus creating a need to describe this increasingly powerful functionality in terms and formats that are readily understood by the user. BGS has seen these issues firsthand as we work to support global companies in the translation of their product documentation. As a result, we have developed a distinct service to aid in the initial creation of technical content. Technical writing, as we see it, is a collaborative effort between developer and author. Together they

Technical writing can be a time-consuming and costly effort. Yet poor documentation can lead to even higher product support costs or worse, it can impede the rate of adoption and use of your products due to their perceived complexity. By engaging the professionals at Bowne Global Solutions (BGS) during your development cycle, you can cost effectively deliver expertly crafted user documentation in time for your product release.

    Standard Technical Paper Templates
The standard outline presented here, in different forms, is a tool to assist you in writing technical papers (especially in computer science). It is relevant for a wide range of, but not every single, type of technical paper. It is certainly appropriate for Master's and Ph.D. theses, for conference and journal papers, and for technical reports. It is also appropriate for proposals, although the speculative nature of a project or thesis proposal requires some adaptation of the form. It is less appropriate for user documentation, but still explicitly represents a number of important issues that must be handled when writing product manuals. These outlines were first created by Douglas Niehaus and then modified by Steve Goddard

      Reviewing Technical Papers
Many students do not know how to review a technical paper. It is important to learn for (at least) two reasons. First, you may be asked to review a confernce or journal paper. Second, you should always know your audience. Knowing what reviewers are looking for makes it easier to write a paper that they will understand (and like).
