Gender-neutral Technical Writing
by Jean Hollis Weber In recurring discussions on the TECHWR-L list, many technical writers argue that they write in "correct English" and are not going to change their style just to suit the political-correctness police. "I won't use 'they' as a singular pronoun because it's not grammatically correct" and "Using contrived phrases such as 's/he' is just too awkward" are arguments I've heard frequently in the debate. But using "incorrect English" or contrived phrases is neither the goal nor the outcome of gender-neutral writing. Gender-neutral writing uses language that does not stereotype either sex nor appear to be referring to only one sex when that is not the writer's intention. In this article, you'll see why gender-neutral writing is important for technical writers to use, what gender-neutral writing is not , and how you can use gender-neutral writing in the documents you develop.

Good technical writers are some of the most versatile of professional writers. Today's tech writers are expected to do more than just write text. On any given project, they must be artists, scientists, craftsmen, technicians, programmers, and marketers. They need writing skills, technical knowledge, research skills, management skills, interpersonal skills, and the ability to think critically about the projects they work on.
Want to learn more about tech writing and about the work tech writers do? Below are some links of general interest that will point you in useful directions. I believe that anyone new to the field should browse them all.

Interested in technical support and technical writing.

document.isTrellix = 1; web hosting domain names email addresses Resume J. Barry Eckert Welcome to my website! This site is to introduce myself to prospective employers, and to give them some idea of how I can benefit their company. I am a native of Birmingham, the largest city in Alabama. After a number of years of avid interest in computers, I decided to pursue a career in the IT industry. After all, do what you love and a job becomes more than just a paycheck, right?
For a little over a year, I have been working in technical support positions. This has been an enjoyable occupation for me, since it combines my computer avocation with an opportunity to be of help to people. It has been very gratifying to talk to people from all over the U.S., of varying technical ability, and assist them in resolving their problems.
My current interests are to move to technical writing, and perhaps at a later time to pursue a network administrator career path. Technical writing is interesting to me for several reasons. First of all, I simply enjoy language. It is also offers a somewhat more detail-oriented, precise approach than the ad hoc nature of tech support. Finally, in my experience, much of the documentation produced for computer software either fails to give enough information or it is simply unreadable. Seldom does a user manual strike a balance between these two problems. I want to apply the skills I have to help produce accurate, complete, and understandable documentation in order to benefit both the company and the user.
