Course Description
This course is designed to introduce you to the fundamentals of technical writing as well as to the collaborative writing processes used by professionals in various fields. There will be weekly reading and writing assignments related to course projects. This is a project-based course, not a lecture course. Thus, many class meetings will take place in a computer classroom rather than in the classroom to which we are assigned. Return to Top Statement of Purpose
  • To present technical writing as situation-specific, not formulaic. That is, every professional document you write must be tailored to a specific purpose and audience. To help students develop effective writing processes and strategies for different technical writing tasks. To provide students with experience writing technical documents for "real-world" situations.

News: 12 May 2004 Baby Jack now 16 months old. Papa has finally been able to get back to publishing math pages, starting with another Speed Arithmetic page, Speed Arithmetic - Multiplication by Six . More to come! 15 November 2002 In response to the growing home school movement, I have begun adding pages intended for younger students (age 9 and above). Children so young don't quite have the reading or attention skills to benefit from how-to websites, so the new material is aimed at parents and other interested adults. I've started with math, in particular, the very excellent speed arithmetic devised by Jacow Trachtenburg . Conceived while a prisoner in the Nazi concentration camps, Dr. Trachtenburg created a method which has been proven to aid even very math-challenged kids do complicated arithmetic fast and accurately. This method is also suitable for adults wishing to self-educate. I've included a link to get the original text from Amazon. I'm delighted that it is still available. Please read the Introduction carefully - as with all educational materials, it is wise to find out as much as possible prior to committing your kids to this or any other non-standard math methods. I think the methods are wonderful, and remove much of the drudgery associated with learning math.

    MY CHILD'S ACADEMIC SUCCESS
How to Help: Provide Guidance Helping Your Child With Homework
Here are some ways that you can provide guidance without taking over your child's homework. Help Your Child Get Organized Help your child to make a schedule and put it in a place where you'll see it often. Writing out assignments will get him used to the idea of keeping track of what's due and when. If your child is not yet able to write, write it for him until he can do it himself. A book bag or backpack will make it easier for your child to carry homework to and from school. Providing homework folders in which your child can tuck his assignments for safekeeping also can help him to stay organized.

Attend all classes and arrive on time. You need to use the USF's Open Use computer labs if you do not have a late-model computer at home, which I understand can be a frustrating problemgiven access problems. You must complete listserv posts and other homework assignments on time. When it comes to working with the computers, don't stress out. Remember you're here to learn. Students in this class tend to have diverse levels of computer literacy ability, so I am hopeful that those of you with more experience will help your colleagues. Always bring a pen and paper and disk to class. Be prepared to write and to exchange your ideas with your peers. Write daily. Be critical of your writing and revise your work with my criticism and your peers' criticisms in mind. Prerequisites
I assume you've taken Basic Technical Writing and possess fairly strong keyboarding skills, but you don't need to be a computer geek. I assume you can write standard-edited American English. If you are unsure about whether you are prepared for this course, please see me. Bring some writing samples with you.
