http://wings.avkids.com/Tennis/start.html
"Aerodynamics in Sports Technology" is an interactive study of sports designed to help students understand aerodynamics, physics, and mathematics, as part of NASA's educational outreach mission via the World Wide Web. The project team is recording data from professional tennis and some of the top players in the world, focusing on how the tennis ball flies: its speed, how it spins, what happens when the ball hits the court, how it moves through the air, and the strokes of the players that generate this flight. The project will showcase computational and experimental methods developed by NASA and other researchers, and make use of new generation high speed digital cameras that allow the team to see the flight of the tennis ball in new ways. Our project is also designed to create opportunities for students and teachers from kindergarten through twelfth grade to follow the progress of an exciting research project, to interact with engineers and tennis researchers, and to pose questions, suggest experiments, and share results. You'll be able to follow our research team in live video conferences over the Internet, "chat" with investigators, and propose experiments for our team to test. We've even set it up so you can conduct your own research! The activities and lesson plans are designed to show you the same principles the research team will study, but without the expensive equipment!

Write their ideas on a sheet of newsprint. Examples may include Mia Hamm (soccer), Brandy Chastain (soccer), Serena and Venus Williams (tennis), and Marian Jones (track). Grade Level - 3-6
Objective: Students will be able to identify the values of quarter, eighth, half, dotted half, and whole notes, as well as rests.
Materials: a small basketball hoop that will hook over a chalkboard or door, and a soft ball that will fit through the hoop.
a "free-throw" line made of a strip of tape on the floor. Flashcards with rhythm math problems on them. I use construction paper, and I draw rhythms as math problems, for example: "quarter note + quarter note + half note + whole note =" and on the opposite side of the card write the answer: 8 beats. (One 1/4 note = 1 beat). Divide the class into 2 teams. Have one person from Team 1 step up to the free-throw line. Hold up a flashcard. They have to add up the notes and give the correct answer to the problem to earn a shot. If they give the correct answer, they get to shoot the ball. If they make the shot, they get 2 points for their team. Then, someone from Team 2 gets a turn. To make it more challenging, you can move the line closer or farther away, add 3-pointers, or play "1 on 1", where one person from each team steps up, and whoever answers the problem correctly first gets to take the shot.

Student Resource: "The Lure and Lore of Weight-Lifting"
Media Type: Article Objectives After completing this lesson, students will be able to:
    • Explain the importance of selecting a program of physical activity that is right for their age and level of development.
    • Discuss how commonsense decisions and practices can reduce the risk of exercise- and activity-related injury.
    • Identify safety measures for doing different types of resistance training.
Introducing the Lesson If you can, locate a Charles Atlas-type ad from the 1940s or 1950s that shows the proverbial 98-pound weakling getting sand kicked in his face by a muscle-bound bully at the beach. Have students pass around the ad and examine the pictures and verbal content. Ask: What product is this ad trying to sell? (Weight-training programs and/or equipment.) Discuss with students the reason for weight training implied in the ad. (To get back at bullies.) Elicit that this is not a healthy reason for taking part in any program of exercise. Ask: What would be some positive reasons for maintaining physical fitness and doing weight training? (Building strength to improve performance at a sport that involves stamina and power.) For whom is this training recommended?

Have you ever read an article in Newsweek or Time magazine? If you have, I am sure that you noticed what an important role sporting events play in the creation of idiomatic language in American English. It is quite common to read statements like, "President Clinton informed reporters that he felt his environmental program was in the home stretch and that he had hit a home run with his appointment of Mr. X as the ambassador to Y". This language can confuse speakers of English as a second language. Therefore, this feature concerns such language because of the importance it plays in everyday usage in both spoken, and written English in the United States.
Below is a fictional conversation chock full of (idiom=containing many examples of) idioms taken from sporting events. In the repeat of the conversation the idioms are highlighted and explained.

In "About Us" we describe our feelings on that important day when Sydney won the bid. We wanted to create an educational yet interesting site on most aspects of the Games in 2000, with sections about the paralympic games which have not been as widely publicised. This site provides a tour to familiarise the viewer with Sydney and the various venues, both within Sydney and in other states. To make the site truly interactive we added a quiz on Olympic facts, a poll for establishing what is the most popular Olympic sport and a section for teachers with lessons provided on a range of topics. The game is in his or her hands. They have the ball and it’s his or her job to make a move to the basket, find a shot, and win the ball game! “What’s your move going to be?” (Students then act out the scenario in self space without a ball) The teacher will them seat them to watch a brief highlight video showing college and professional basketball players making great moves performing dribbling skills. Stated Objectives:
    • Students will identify basic and advanced skills of dribbling a basketball.

Related Goal q Students will be able to identify the different skills in the game of basketball. Note: (Many students choosing to use this model fail to realize that any scripted dialogue must be accompanied by an activity! In the sample below the author states that prior to the main activity the students will be watching video clips of basketball games. Please make sure your lesson includes an activity that gets the learner/client set for the body of the lesson. That is the intent of the "anticipatory set, to get the learner to anticipate the lesson.) Anticipatory Set: q The teacher will start the class out watching a video on the proper way to shoot a free throw in basketball. q There will be an instructional video and a clip from this past year's College Championship Basketball Game. Stated Objectives q Students will identify 3 important components of shooting free throws.

STEPS: Version 1 Team 1: Face Washing Team (FWT)
Team 2: Environmental Improvement Team (EIT)
    • Group Work: Working within their groups, the children (with the help of the teacher) develop a list of 5 -10 questions to be used in a quiz between the two groups. Each group should develop the same number of questions. During this competition the teacher keeps score. Each question should be written on a separate piece of paper and put into a bag. Competition: The teacher is the judge. S/He holds the red ball that symbolizes ìTrachoma, the disease.î Draw straws or flip a coin to see which team will go first. The first team (FWT) takes a question out of the bag and reads it to team 2 (EIT), who must answer. [Options: Either each team member can take a turn answering a question, or the team can consult and answer as a group. Each team must follow the same procedure. If the answer is wrong then the teacher throws the ball to EIT and writes ìOî on the board for the FWT team. EIT then asks a question of the FWT. If the answer is wrong, the pupil with the ball throws it to another pupil in the FWT and writes ìOî on the board for the EIT team. If the answer is correct the team receives a point and is allowed to answer another question. The ball is transferred to the opposing team only when the team answers the question incorrectly. The competition goes on in the same way until all the questions from the two groups are covered.
