Lesson Plans for THE TEAM level D
Text Type:
Fact / Informational Text
Reading Level:
D
Word Count:
Pages
Text Summary
The Team explains what each player on a baseball team does and why each player is needed. Because so many children regularly participate in extracurricular activities, they will be able to relate to and learn from this book. The idea of teamwork is strongly reinforced.
Reader Supports
The Team incorporates a variety of reader supports:
  • Repetitive patterns
  • Familiar topic (for some children)
  • Simple sentence structure
  • Picture clues
  • Repetition of high utility words
Reader Challenges
The amount of text on the page may overwhelm the beginning reader. Make sure to allow the child to get comfortable with the idea of complete sentences before attempting to introduce this book. The size of some of the words may seem a bit intimidating as well, so remind children to break the words up to help them sound out the word. If the child is not active in outdoor activities and sports, the concept of the book may be a totally new idea to him/her. The words associated with baseball may be a challenge if this is the case. Lesson Objectives Reading Strategies Children should use a variety of strategies to decode words and bring meaning to print. The targeted strategy for this lesson is: Going back and rereading.

Other words: mythical, entrepreneurship, concession, infections, specifications, critique BEFORE READING: Even though this is a fairly short article, it has some difficult proper names and words. Take the young reader through the list of names and words, offering help where needed. If no more than three are missed, suggest the reader read the article silently. If four to seven are missed, suggest the reader read the article aloud to you. If eight or more are missed, you offer to read the article aloud. In each instance, point out that questions will be asked after the reading. DURING READING: Where the child reads silently, make known that you will help with any words, if asked. Where the child reads aloud, help immediately with any words causing difficulty in order to keep the reading fluent. If you read aloud, model fluent, expressive oral reading.
