Team Handball First Appeared: 1936 (men); 1976 (women) by Mike Morrison Despite the fact that South Korea won the women's gold medal in both and , and that over eight million people from over 150 countries play it, handball is largely considered a European-only sport. In fact, ask many Americans what they think handball is, and they'll probably describe a game similar to racquetball with two competitors slapping a small ball off a wall with their hands. Not so.
    Did You Know?
The NBA Houston Rockets center Hakeem Olajuwon began his athletic career and unknowingly honed his basketball skills by playing handball in Nigeria as a child.
The easiest way to describe handball is, "soccer with the hands instead of the feet." Much like soccer, it can be both physical and fast, with shots being thrown at speeds approaching 65 miles per hour. The sport used to be played on a large turf field with 11 players per side, but has more recently been moved indoors and played with with seven players, which has sped up the game even more. The object is to score more goals than the other team by throwing a ball (somewhat smaller than a soccer ball) into a D-shaped net. Games consist of two 30-minute halves. Players can only take three steps after catching the ball and can only hold the ball for three seconds before they must either pass, dribble (like basketball), or shoot. A defender can use his/her hands or body to block a ball but can't use the feet or lower legs (except for goalies). Like soccer, free throws, corner throws, and penalty throws become an integral part of the game.

The object of the game is to score the highest number of points by throwing the ball into the opponent's goal, which is 2 meters high and 3 meters wide. Competition
The game is played in 30-minute halves. The rapid, continuous play is marked by spectacular leaps and dives. Players may take three steps before and after a dribble. If not moving, the player may only hold the ball for three seconds; the player must then either move, score, or pass the ball to another team member. Meanwhile, the other team is trying to gain possession of the ball by either snatching it away or intercepting a pass. The goalie may use any part of the body to defend the goal. Both men and women compete separately during tournament style competition. After several days of preliminary rounds, finalists advance to the gold-medal game. News, History, and Fast Facts

Olympic Sports Olympic Sports
The various international sports federations choose the disciplines, events, and sports for each of the Olympic Games. To qualify as an Olympic sport, that sport must be widely practiced by men in at least 75 countries and on four continents, and by women in at least 40 countries and on three continents. Sports widely practiced in at least 25 countries and on three continents may be included in the Winter Games. In the past, the host country occasionally has been allowed to include one or two demonstration sports. If there is enough interest, they may be selected as medal sports in future Games. For example, tennis and baseball were demonstration sports before becoming medal sports in the 1988 and 1992 Games, respectively. Check out More Sports for all the action!

Athlete Eligibility and Classification
Players at the Deaflympics compete under CISS rules which require a minimum hearing loss of 55 dB in the better ear. Classification procedures and criteria are described on the CISS web site at http://www.ciss.org . Click on "about," then "regulations," then scroll down to Article 1.3 on eligibility. Players in Special Olympics competition must have a primary diagnosis of mental retardation. They are classified according to a process called divisioning in which athletes are grouped by ability levels for competition. In team handball, divisioning is based upon scores from the four Team Handball Skills Assessment Tests, namely the spot shot, speed pass, dribble, and power throw, as well as the results from early round play. For more information, consult the Special Olympics rules at http://www.specialolympics.org

Team Handball
Team Handball is one of the most popular sports Special Olympics offers. It is played on a court slightly larger than the size of a basketball court and is often described as water polo on dry land. Special Olympics athletes demonstrate agility, flexibility, quickness, body control and strength. Special Olympics Team Handball offers individual skills competition to allow athletes to train and compete in basic team handball skills. The development of these key skills is necessary prior to advancing to team competition. These skills include target pass, 10-meter dribble and shoot. Special Olympics athletes can also participate in Unified Sports® Team Handball Competition. Special Olympics Unified Sports is a program that combines Special Olympics athletes and athletes without mental retardation (partners) on sports teams for training and competition. As in all Special Olympics sports, athletes are grouped in competition divisions according to ability level, age and gender.

But it s totally different from anything we know. . And that makes the olympic sport of team handball kind of hard to describe. Cappelmann tried, though.

Atlanta Team Handball players (left to right) Ryan Hansell, 19, of Marietta, Stephen Futral, 19, of Acworth, and Luqman Salam, 19, of Smyrna, join nine other Georgia players on the U.S. team that will play in the 2001 Men's Junior Pan American Championship April 4-8 in College Park, Ga. Until the Olympics came to Atlanta in 1996, these Cobb County athletes had never even heard of team handball.
Team Handball: So foreign, so familiar
Moving with the ball in my hand felt awkward, and seemed like it should be illegal. And that makes the Olympic sport of team handball kind of hard to describe. Cappelmann tried, though. "It's like soccer with your hands," he said. "It's like water polo without the water." As the practice went on, Cappelmann also likened aspects of the game to basketball, lacrosse, rugby and ice hockey. Team handball is an amalgam. It's an anomaly. "It's addicting," said 19-year-old Ryan Hansell, of Marietta, a wing on the US team. "Once you start playing, it gets in your blood." Team handball is fast-paced and physical. The indoor court is roughly 66 feet wide and 131 feet long, with goals on either end that are about half the size of those used in soccer. Two teams of seven players pass, dribble and shoot a leather ball about the size of large cantaloupe.

    The Game
Team Handball combines the skills of running, jumping, catching, and throwing into a fast-moving, exciting game. Elements of soccer, basketball, hockey and water polo all can be seen in team handball. The basic objective of the game is to out maneuver the opponent by passing the ball quickly and then throw the ball past the defense and goalie to score.
    History
Team handball has existed in the United States since 1959, but only in the last few years has it been recognized as something entirely different from the YMCA variety of 4 wall handball. The inclusion of team handball in the Olympics in 1972, and for women in 1976 in Montreal has given the sport more exposure. The sport originated in Europe in the late 1920's and is now second only to soccer in popularity. Team Handball is being played in 72 nations on 6 continents with more than 3 million players affiliated with the International Handball Federation (IHF).
