Origins

Handball is considered one of the oldest games in the history of sport. A few references in Homer's Odyssey provide evidence of a game similar to Handball, played on the island of the Faiakes (Corfu). Further evidence of a primitive version of Handball is also found on a marble plaque found at the Athens Acropolis, dating to about 600 B.C. In Roman years, the game then called "arpaston", spread to the people of Germany and France.
At the end of the 19th century, the modern form of Handball appeared in Denmark, Germany and Czechoslovakia, as a training exercise for gymnasts, and as a fitness tool for football players during their off season. Around 1910, the Swedes adopted regulations for handball that were similar to those of football.
In 1936, Handball made its debut to the public as an exhibition sport at the Olympic Games. It was held in an open stadium, with two teams of 11 players on each team. Handball was officially incorporated into Olympic Games in 1972. It was held in an indoor court measuring 20x40m with teams of seven players.
The Sport
Each team consists of seven players on the field and seven substitutes on the bench. An unlimited number of substitutions are allowed during the game. Two referees monitor the game. It takes place in an indoor sports hall on a court measuring 40 x 20 m. Goal posts, measuring 2 m high and 3 m wide, are placed at the centre of each end line. The players' objective is, by only using their hands, to put the ball into the goal of the opposing team. The team with the most goals wins.

It’s a combination of three of the nation’s favourite sports - soccer, netball and basketball - it’s fast, it’s fun and it can be played anywhere: indoors, outdoors or on the beach. It’s also big in Europe (although not the UK), but Europeans who came to Australia in such a flood after World War II don’t seem to have brought their passion for handball with them. The fact handball has never become popular here is Australia’s loss. High-scoring, dynamic and athletic, it is an outstanding spectator sport. The Game In handball, a three second rule ensure players cannot dwell on the ball and while there is no basketball-style shot clock, if a referee (there are two) rules a team is not trying to score, he/she can award possession to the opposition.

NORTH PALM BEACH, FL (November 4, 1996) The U.S. Olympic Committee and the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association's Athletic Footwear Association (AFA) have joined forces to develop a unique Internet site that will serve as a guide to non-traditional sports. The AFA will work in conjunction with the USOC to provide more in-depth information for non-traditional sports in its existing "Sport-by Sport" area including, but not limited to, wrestling, team handball, badminton, fencing, tennis, kayaking, canoeing and cross-country skiing. "Through our participation studies, we've found that a great number of our young people quit sports at the middle school level, because that's when sports become varsity activities rather than fun things to do at recess," commented AFA executive director Gregg Hartley after announcing the program. "We wanted to raise their awareness of other potential sports, and we intend this innovative site will aid in that effort." The site will include a self-administered skills evaluation exercise, said Jim Page, the USOC's deputy executive director for programs. "Once individuals have determined their physical Îskills IQ' they can use that information to search through a database of information on each sport to determine which might be the best for them."

"There will be no differentiation between a team handball athlete and an NBA professional."
    Terry Madden,
chief executive officer of the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency
(CBS) International sports bodies and national governments on Wednesday endorsed the first global anti-doping code.
Sports federations and more than 70 governments gave their support to a document establishing uniform drug-testing regulations and sanctions cutting across all sports and countries. Delegates hailed the backing of the World Anti-Doping Code as a breakthrough in the fight against performance-enhancing drugs in sport. However, it remains to be seen whether all parties will actually implement the code. Endorsement of the code came after some federations and governments put aside their continuing differences over two-year drug sanctions and exemptions for U.S. professional leagues. "There will be no differentiation between a team handball athlete and an NBA professional," said Terry Madden, chief executive officer of the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency.

History Team Handball originated in Europe in the1900s and recognizes over 140 countries as members of the International handball Federation (IHF). Handball first appeared in the Olympics in the 1936 Berlin Games as an outdoor sport, with 11 players on a side. It was not played again at the Olympic games until 1972, where it was played indoors with 7 players on each side. Women’s handball was added to the Olympic Games in 1976. Simplified Rules of the Game Object of the Game Handball combines the elements of soccer and basketball, as six players move the ball down a floor that is larger than a basketball court and try to score by throwing the ball past a goalkeeper into the net. A successful scoring attempt results in the award of a single point. Typical final scores in this action-packed game run in the mid twenties. A regulation game is played in 30 minute halves with one team timeout per half. A coin toss determines which team starts the game with a throw-off. The clock stops only for team timeouts, injuries, and at the referee’s discretion.
