Y2K Information
Introduction This publication contains resources and information for the general public and individuals who are educating the public about responses to emergency situations. The majority of the information focuses on food and water safety and storage, before, during and after natural disasters. A section of Internet Resources is provided. Many local public libraries offer internet connections for those who do not have home access. The last section of this publication includes resources for Y2K. While this is a particularly timely issue, information in these resources can be applied to other emergency situations beyond the year 2000. However, availability of these materials may be limited. Brochures and Fact Sheets The full text items below can be obtained by contacting the agency listed or by visiting the web site.

Students carry out text and internet based research to find out about the content in various foods of cholesterol, saturated fats and unsaturated fats, and about some cardiovascular health issues. They use a poster or chart to summarise their information.
The reference needed - Composition of Foods, Australia (Volumes 1-7), 1989-95 - is available from AusInfo shops in all States and Territories. Contact details for these shops can be found at http://www.dofa.gov.au/infoaccess/infoaccess/ia_infoshops.htm
Relevant sections in Biotechnology Online include:
Herbicide tolerant canola

Producing even healthier canola oil
What people know about canola
This activity can be done in conjunction with the activity ‘Fat, cholesterol and your arteries’, which provides students with knowledge about saturated and unsaturated fats in foods, and their relationship to human health. Alternatively, or to supplement that information, the internet sites listed in this worksheet can be used to research relevant background information. Armed with this information, students (either individually or in small groups) design a questionnaire which they use to survey 10 - 20 people to find out what they know about the health benefits of unsaturated compared with saturated spreads. After collating group or class results, they design a poster to convey some of the less well-understood information.

Dear Educator, The classroom resources you see here are designed to help you use this Web site, other material on the Internet, and the "Journey Into Amazonia" videos for a study of the Amazon rainforest. These materials are designed for upper elementary, middle, or high school students (grades 5-10) although extension suggestions may help you modify them for younger or older students. Each lesson plan provides objectives, standards correlations, background information, Web links, procedures, extension suggestions, and assessment recommendations. Each incorporates video clips from the "Journey Into Amazonia" documentary, though the lessons also function as stand-alone activities. The "Be An Amazon Activist" sheet offers suggestions for students, families, or classes who want to get more involved in Amazon rainforest conservation. Please take some time to explore the classroom resources and the rest of the content on the "Journey Into Amazonia" Web site. You may also be interested in a previous PBS site called " Science in the Rainforest " which launched during the 1995-1996 school year and introduces students to the rainforests of Costa Rica.

  • American Environmental History : Just what is "American Environmental History"? Didn't we have enough to try to understand in our history without a whole new discipline? This course will introduce students to this exciting and vital new field, beginning with pre-Invasion Indians and concluding with an assessment of the American environment today. Through readings and discussions we will examine a variety of influential issues and themes. Particular emphasis will be paid to politics (both domestic and foreign), gender, race, ethnicity and religion.
  • Extension Courses : An on-line course offered by Extension Teaching at the University of Missouri-Columbia is a regular University course conducted entirely over the Internet. Although the class does follow the semester calendar, students can participate from anywhere in the world, and the classroom is open 24 hours a day, allowing students to participate in the course at times convenient for them. On-line courses may be combined with traditional courses. If you are pursuing a degree, you should contact your advisor to make certain the course will apply to your degree program.
