ABSTRACT
While the examples of pseudoscience are a very small portion of these traditional courses in general and analytical chemistry, they will undoubtedly be some of the most memorable particulars that the students recall in future years. And if the examination of scientific foibles by these students helps to avoid future cases of pathological science on their part, we have gained much with little investment. INTRODUCTION This paper briefly describes a four-level approach to using pseudoscience and pathological science as tools to further educational goals in second-semester general chemistry and analytical chemistry courses. It provides detailed information about five specific areas of pseudoscience, pathological science, or anomaly investigations that are applicable to chemical education, and describes two student special projects and student experiences at a conference on controversial research. A compilation of further instances of pseudoscience, pathological science and anomaly investigations, and discussions of specific uses, can be found on the Reference Page
The four-level approach involved the inclusion of pseudoscientific topics in (a) lecture, discussion, and examinations; (b) demonstrations; (c) laboratory experiments; and (d) student attendance at a conference where controversial research was presented by mainstream and fringe scientists. Levels (a) and (b) were used in both general chemistry and analytical chemistry classes, while levels (c) and (d) were used only in analytical chemistry, and only for the most motivated and highest achieving students.

Laboratory Teaching General Information
The Laboratory of Paper Technology provides graduate and postgraduate education in paper science and technology and carries out related scientific research. The Laboratory's activities cover all areas of papermaking, from mechanical pulping and stock preparation to paper finishing, converting, printing and end products. The students can specialise either in papermaking, paper converting or in the future also in printing in the later phase of their studies.
Recently, high-quality coated products and their manufacturing technology have gained more emphasis on the students' curricula. The importance of the fibre and paper physics as well as paper chemistry has also increased in order to give a solid basis for students to understand the complex papermaking process and control of the product properties. Education and research in printing technology will be in focus in the future.

Laboratory Teaching General Information
The chemists in the forest products area have a significant role in the modern process technology. The knowledge in chemical reactions and in physical chemistry is needed to understand the unit processes of forest products production. Especially modern ecological less water and chemicals consuming industry is demanding high-level knowledge in chemical phenomenons. Black liquor has been traditionally studied to develop by-products. The best known these kind of products are tall oil soap, tall oil and sitosterol. Other high tech products refined by chemists are xylitol from birch, cellulose derivatives like viscose, rayon and cellophane. The "tailoring" of wood fibre surfaces for special papers has recently become more and more important task. The graduating chemist from the department of Forest Products will develop more ecological processes and refine new innovative main and by-products. Forest Products Chemistry is focusing on wood chemistry, analytical chemistry of wood components and surface and colloid chemistry in forest products technology. Education covers almost totally the area of forest products chemistry and physical chemistry of forest products. Studies contain lectures and practical exercising works. The teaching professors have a strong background in teaching and in research. Visiting research scientists complements the lectures. Studying is including also working experience in the forest products industry or research centre. Well-paid jobs can be find from Finland and other countries. Graduated Masters of Science are employed for research, developing and managing tasks.

A 15-week term was divided into three 5-week segments and assigned to three science departments. The Geology Department determined that students were to learn the scientific method and the science of geology through field studies, problem-solving, conducting experiments, and participating in faculty research. This report focuses on radon research and engaging students in radon studies to fulfill the science requirement. The Biological Sciences Department similarly engaged students in fermentation/enology studies.

Teaching General Education Mathematics
The following article appeared in The AMATYC Review , Fall 1999. General Education Mathematics: New Approaches for a New Millennium Jeffrey O. Bennett, University of Colorado at Boulder William L. Briggs, University of Colorado at Denver Philosophy is written in this grand book — I mean the universe — which stands continuous open to our gaze, but it cannot be understood unless one first learns to comprehend the language and interpret the characters in which it is written. It is written in the language of mathematics.
I think it’s not so much a question of what students study, as how we equip them to lead a life that involves regular use of certain skills [of quantitative reasoning].
Keith Devlin
, quoted in Forman (1997). Introduction When it comes to mathematics, we know what we must teach students majoring in science, engineering, or mathematics ("SEM" for short). These students need particular calculus-based skills that they will use regularly in their careers. But what about the rest of the collegiate population, the "non-SEM" students that easily comprise half of all students we teach in mathematics courses in this country? These students outnumber their SEM peers among all college students, and they represent a large majority among students at two-year colleges (National Science Board, 1998). Nevertheless, many institutions have given little serious thought to the development of appropriate mathematics curricula for non-SEM students. One result is that approaches to non-SEM mathematics courses are all over the board. Another, of which we are constantly reminded in conversations with mathematics teachers across the United States, is widespread dissatisfaction with these courses among both faculty and students.

Washington University, St. Louis Undergraduate physics students have a strong interest in general relativity and its strange predictions, yet lack the background in physics and mathematics to study it in depth. Nevertheless several key phenomena can be taught and understood with some elementary background, which should be common to most physics majors, such as the principle of equivalence, Newtonian gravitation, and basic special relativity. This will be illustrated by some worked examples, including the gravitational redshift of light, the deflection of light (just 1/2 the correct amount, unfortunately), and big bang cosmology. My Experimental Gravity Web page is designed to make available the current information about experimental tests of general relativity. Check it out ! Return
