How do you indentify possible dyslexia in a pupil?
The criteria most commonly used in assessment is the disparity (difference) between a pupil's intelligence and their actual achievement.
If a pupil tou teach appears to speak and listen normally, yet they are unable to read and spell, then there may be more to check out.
Some of the well-known symptoms of dyslexia are:
  • confusion over the direction letters face (b/d, p/9, p/q);
  • difficulties with left and right;
  • difficulties with keeping organized;
  • difficulties with spelling
  • difficulties with directions (e.g. east and west);
  • missing out words when reading.
More information What causes dyslexia To be quite honest, nobody quite knows at the moment. There has been a real increase in the amount of research taking place, and a number of possibilities are beginning to emerge, but the waters are still fairly murky. The overall picture is that dyslexia can be caused in two ways: 1. by hearing problems at an early age; and

Student Assessment and Testing
We believe that neither excellence nor equity in education can be achieved as long as student assessment instruments, policies and practices limit opportunities to learn and narrow or dilute curricula and instruction. Both excellence and equity goals can, on the other hand, be served by assessments that help teachers to identify students' strengths as well as their needs and to determine the most appropriate and effective means of helping them to learn and grow.

Conclusion
Standardized Testing and At Risk Students
Standardized tests have a disproportionate impact on students, teachers and curriculum in schools that serve low income and minority students (Mitchell 1992; Tate 1993). Some widely found effects that are of particular consequence for equity in education are reviewed briefly below.
Testing and Ability Grouping
A substantial share of U.S. schools engage in ability grouping or tracking of students beginning at the elementary and middle grade levels according to presumed ability levels. As a number of studies have shown, tracking almost always means that those pupils who need the most support to raise their performance levels get the least, while those who need it the least have it showered on them. The consequence is a two tiered system of education characterized by the following conditions.

It is especially important for elementary credential candidates and others to be aware of the impact of any regulatory and/or statutory revisions to these requirements. Updates on these issues will be posted to the State Board of Education and Commission websites when available. Demonstrating content knowledge in a subject area is one of the statutory requirements for the California Single Subject Teaching Credential. California law provides two options for meeting this subject matter competence requirement: a) completion of a Commission-approved program of course work in the subject area, or b) passage of the Commission-approved content area examination. The examinations used contain both multiple-choice and constructed response components. The single subject area examinations are also an option for satisfying the subject matter requirement for the Education Specialist Instruction Credential.

The Field Test will be conducted from October 2002 through April 2003. (See attached timeline.) The following information will assist you in preparing for your possible participation in this Field Test. About the Teaching Performance Assessment (TPA) The Field Test version of the prototype Teaching Performance Assessment (TPA) measures the Teaching Performance Expectations (TPEs) that describe what California teachers need to know and be able to do before receiving a Preliminary Credential. This vision of teaching is both complex and interactive, and so the assessment is necessarily multidimensional. In the Field Test version, there are four inter-related yet separate assessment tasks. Collectively the four tasks measure the TPEs. The four draft tasks are:
  • Principles of Developmentally Appropriate and Content-Specific Pedagogy Candidates will demonstrate their knowledge of principles of developmentally appropriate pedagogy and content specific pedagogy.

    Classroom Assessment Techniques Subscribe to NTLF Library Reference Materials What is classroom assessment? Classroom assessment is both a teaching approach and a set of techniques. The approach is that the more you know about what and how students are learning, the better you can plan learning activities to structure your teaching. The techniques are mostly simple, non-graded, anonymous, in-class activities that give both you and your students useful feedback on the teaching-learning process. How is classroom assessment different? Classroom assessment differs from tests and other forms of student assessment in that it is aimed at course improvement, rather than at assigning grades. The primary goal is to better understand your students' learning and so to improve your teaching. How do I use Classroom Assessment Techniques?
    • Decide what you want to learn from a classroom assessment. Choose a Classroom Assessment Technique (CAT) that provides this feedback, is consistent with your teaching style, and can be easily implemented in your class.
