15 ideas for successful parent-teacher conferences
Communicating with parents is one of the most important things teachers do. When we work together with a student's parents, the atmosphere for student learning is improved, and when we have parents' support, we do a better job. Student achievement improves with increased parent interest and involvement. Here are some tips for getting off on the right foot in parent conferences: l. Invite both parents to conferences with you, but be sure to find out first what your student's living arrangement is. Families may take many forms two-parent, single-parent, guardians, foster care, sibling head-of-household... make no embarrassing or inappropriate assumptions! "Parents" on this page refers to a child's adult guardian(s). 2. Start communicating with parents early in the year with a letter, newsletter, or telephone call. Outline your curriculum and expectations and let parents know how they can reach you. 3. Allow plenty of time for the conference.

Changes in the Ways Teachers Report to Parents About Children's Performance
Two of the major emphases of contemporary early childhood education are involvement of parents and collaboration between school and family. Effective communication with parents is of paramount importance in promoting the learning and development of young children. Recognizing that traditional report cards with letters or other symbols representing levels of children's progress provide very limited information to parents, teachers of young childrenespecially at preschool and kindergarten levelstraditionally have relied on teacher-parent conferences to enhance communication. Such conferences may be the primary means of teacher-parent communication about the child or may be supplementary to written reports. As school improvement processes have progressed, schools have adopted strategies to expand and clarify the information that teachers share with parents. The Primary Program: Growing and Learning in the Heartland
"Informal dialogue; newsletters, e.g., 'This week we studied . . . .'; telephone calls; notes to parents; sending home samples of children's work; sharing children's self-evaluations; home visits by the teacher and classroom visits by the parents; conferences, report cards; and portfolios." What's hot for the new school year? Parent-teacher conferences. In
an age of cell phones, voice mail and video conferencing, parents are
finding that the best form of communication with their child's school
often is the oldest form face-to-face.
The experts say these parents are right. A growing body of
research shows that attending school conferences does much more than help
parents get to know their child's teachers. Indeed, says researcher
Laurence Steinberg, parents who get involved in events like conferences
actually improve their child's success in school.
What can you do to have a good conference? Here are some tips from
teachers and parents: * Before the conference: Discuss what's going well in class and what could be better. determine where academic strengths and possible weaknesses lie. tell the teacher. * During the conference: eager to listen and that you would like some time for the teacher to listen to you.

by Lydia Spinelli, Ed.D. Introduction Before the conference During the conference About the author ... Related articles Introduction Parent-teacher conferences are an opportunity to establish better communication between parents and teachers. Since children are different at home and in school, both the parent and the teacher gain in understanding the child and can, therefore, be more effective in helping him or her. The teacher may be very surprised to learn that what she thought was a humorous way of dealing with the child was actually making the child feel belittled. The parent may learn that the teacher feels the child is not giving school his best effort. The teacher may learn that the child is distracted because the family is going through a difficult time. Of course, many parents are pleasantly surprised to hear how much better behaved the child is in school than at home. Back to top.

PARENT CONFERENCES
The Rapides Parish School Board realizes that communication between home and school is an important factor in establishing a highly effective school program. Planned conferences between parents and teachers are an important way to bring about understanding and close cooperation between the home and school. Communication should be maintained through conferences with all parents, not just with those where academic or other problems suggest the need for better communication.
The principal or supervisor should be present at any parent-teacher conference when there is reason to anticipate an atmosphere of hostility.

Whether your child is in elementary, middle, or secondary school, parent-teacher conferences are important. If your school does not schedule regular conferences, you can request them. Teachers need your help to do a first-class job. Together, you can help your child have a great school year. Before the conference In preparation, talk to your child about the conference, and most importantly, write down questions you would like to pose to the teacher. During the conferenc e The conference is an opportunity to exchange information with the teacher and develop ways to cooperate in educating your child. After the conference Once the conference is over, you should follow up with your child as well as the teacher. For more information, see the articles available in

Williams High School in Alexandria, Va., where I teach English: parent-teacher conference day. Such parent-teacher conferences are common in many schools around this time of year. But such meetings are getting increased attention under the No Child Left Behind Act. President Bush's 2001 education act requires schools to come up with ways to improve parental involvement in schools. Some states, such as Maryland and New York, are launching parental involvement programs. Denver's board of education recently approved a policy that, like Maryland's, eventually will include a parent advisory council. Those programs are outgrowths of the federal law.

time for both parents and teachers when dealing with academic

links to sites that have useful information and resources related to parent-teacher conferences. Unity Poem Establishing open communication with parents is important to develop the "team approach" that will affect a student's learning, behavior, and achievement. When a child knows that the parent and teacher are working together, it makes the job of educating the child a lot easier. Research supports the benefits of having parents involved in their child's schooling. Attached is a poem titled Unity . It is a poem that was given to me by a parent to show her appreciation for a rewarding school year. I loved the poem so much that I began giving a copy of it to the parents of my students each year. I hope you enjoy it.

Parent Conferences
Communicating with parents
It’s one of the most important things we do as teachers. When we work together with a child’s parents toward common goals, we vastly improve the atmosphere for learning. Most successful teacher-parent “teams” begin with a conference — usually one conducted before there's a real need to meet. Good Luck!
Tips for a productive and successful parent conference:
Make contact early. Get your relationship off to a good start by contacting them early in the year with a memo or newsletter. Outline the year’s course work and let them know you’ll be happy to meet with them during the year. Invite both parents and caregivers. Encourage the involved adults to attend when possible. Misunderstandings are less common if both parents hear what you have to say, and you can gauge the kind of support the child has. Remember: Each parent/caregiver may not be available. Be careful not to unwittingly hurt a child’s feelings by assuming it’s easy to schedule. Get the name and relationship right.
