Parent Teacher Organization Welcome to the Lee-Scott PTO Web Page. As Co-Presidents we want to thank you, the volunteer parents, that make our PTO such an outstanding organization. We ask you to continue your support and hard work that ensures the goal of excellence in every phase of our school. We ask you to become more involved with the PTO to accomplish our mission to further Lee-Scott Academy programs. Your time, talents and education have been and will continue to be a valuable asset that will only enhance the future of a Lee-Scott education. We will also need your ingenuity and energy to help the PTO fund additional funding not met by basic tuition. This additional funding guarantees scholastic excellence and citizenship that we expect from our great students at Lee-Scott. Thank you for all you have done in the past and in advance for the work that will make this another great year for our children at Lee-Scott Academy. Go Warriors! The PTO meets at 1:45 pm on the first Wednesday of every month. The meetings are held in Jeri Earnest's kindergarten classroom. We encourage all parents to attend. Mary Lynn Bryan and Debra Scott

Organizations: An Opportunity
for Engineers
By Carolyn Koenig and Rosanna Lerma Table of Contents Introduction A frequent lament of K-12 teachers is the shortage of examples of real-world applications of science and math that will make course work come alive for the students. Math and science teachers’ organizations offer a vehicle for engineers to communicate their knowledge of applications of math and science fundamentals. At teachers’ meetings they can meet K-12 educators and learn informally of their needs and concerns. They can get a view of the educational resources available from commercial, nonprofit, and government sources. Teachers’ organizations are leaders in standards development, and they are tuned in to the political scene at both the national and local level. Engineers’ involvement with these organizations can spawn a wide variety of projects to support and enhance math, science, and technology education.

PTO members give countless hours to the schools. Some of this time is spent in the schools in activities such as assisting in the media center, being a class parent, conducting Great Books discussions, or serving special lunches. Members of the PTO's also arrange fundraisers such as Food For Thought, Gift Wrap Sales, Plant Sales, Holiday Stores, and Roller Skating Parties. Participation in events such as these can be both enjoyable and rewarding to parent and child. As a result of these activities, the PTO's were able to donate to the schools well over $150,000 in gifts. Included among these gifts were: cultural assemblies, video and computer equipment, funding for field trips and playground equipment.

Teaching plan for teachers of grades 4 6. Includes contact information for organizations that offer materials, information, and projects for protecting the environment.
http://teacherlink.ed.usu.edu/tlresources/units/Byrnes-celebrations/Earth Day- H
Mini-Unit Subtopic: Earth Day Grade levels: 4th through 6th Author: Becky Johnson Background: Our planet is a complex system of land, air, and water. Living things depend on each other and this system for existence. Over the thousands of years since life has existed on the earth, it has undergone some changes. The following are some of these changes: Many species became extinct before mankind made its appearance, however, since humans have existed on the earth, the extinction rate has risen dramatically. More than 4,000 species are currently considered threatened. Plant and animal life become endangered for many reasons. Forest depletion, hunting, and pollution are the most obvious factors. When an animal becomes endangered, dozens of other species can also become endangered. For example, elephants disappeared from southern Africa about 80 years ago because of hunters. Elephants continue to be hunted, mainly for their costly ivory tusks. The endangerment of elephants also has endangered such animals in their area as wildebeest and antelope who live off of the open-grassland which elephants create by eating their way through a jungle. Oxygen-producing trees and plants are being cut down for the purpose of growing foods, grazing livestock, making paper products, etc. The cutting down of forests puts forest wildlife at risk and decreases the oxygen in the air. It also defaces the natural beauty of the planet. Tropical rain forests are often cleared for farming. The soil in these forests are poor in nutrients, and within a few years the crops fail and the land is abandoned. New forests are cleared.

We need efficient, new techniques - based on sophisticated formal mathematics and software technology - for taking fruit of the enormous knowledge available in current mathematical sources and for organizing mathematical knowledge in a new way. On the other side, due its very nature, the realm of mathematical information looks as the best candidate for testing innovative theoretical and technological solutions for content-based systems, interoperability, management of machine understandable information, and the Semantic Web.

118. Teachers' Organizations Seek To Break Education Union Monopoly -- 06/28/1999
Monopolies are bad, and that includes union monopolies like the one in education but some organizations are struggling to give teachers more choice.
http://www.cnsnews.com/Culture/Archive/1998-2000/CUL19990628a.html
Teachers' Organizations Seek to Break Education Union Monopoly
By Justin Torres
CNS Senior Staff Writer
28 June, 1999
(CNS) - Recently dismissed by American Federation of Teachers president Sandra Feldman as insignificant, non-union teachers' organizations are nonetheless a rapidly growing alternative to the AFT's and National Educational Association's power over issues like teacher's pay, charter schools, and curriculum revisions.
In right-to-work states like Georgia, Texas, and Missouri, union alternatives are larger than the state affiliates of the national teachers' unions - and in 22 states, they claim 220,000 members and growing.
These organizations, such as the 46,000 member Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE), the 94,000 member Association of Texas Professional Educators (ATPE), and the 42,000 member Missouri State Teacher's Association (MSTA) have come together to "provide teachers with a choice about whether or not to join their state union," Larry Comers of ATPE told CNSNews.com.
