http://www.arlington.k12.va.us/schools/swanson/handbooks/star.htm
STAR STAR is an acronym for Swanson's Teacher Advisor and Reading Time. The Teacher Advisory is based on the middle school philosophy that students in the middle years have at least one significant adult with whom they can relate on a daily basis. Students are heterogeneously grouped from the full population at each grade level into more intimate teaching groups. There are twelve to seventeen students in each STAR group. Students meet with this small group of peers and a teacher advisor on a daily basis throughout the school year from 7:50-8:10.
A variety of activities are scheduled for STAR. The scope of activities is broad; some are the same across grade levels and others will vary. The advisor selects the activities that are most applicable to the STAR students. Some highlights of the STAR program:
  • SQUIRT days are on Mondays and Thursdays. The entire school reads quietly from material of each individual's choice. Character Education takes place during STAR from the second week of October to May. Each month focuses on a different pillar of character education.

Autobiographical Sketch of Shelly M. Allen My name is Shelly McKellar Allen and I LOVE MATH! I have worked in the Richmond County Public School System since 1989. I am currently the Coordinator of Mathematics K-12 for Richmond County Public Schools and a doctoral student at the University of Georgia. Prior to becoming the Coordinator of Mathematics, I taught both high school and middle school mathematics and science. I received my Bachelor of Science Degree in Secondary Mathematics Education from the University of Georgia in 1989 and began teaching high school in Richmond County Public Schools. While teaching high school I became very concerned with the number of students in my classes who seemed to have gaps in their mathematics knowledge. I attended numerous professional development opportunities searching for instructional strategies that would help me to be more successful with ALL of my students. This led me to explore the idea of teaching middle school mathematics. While teaching middle school, I became involved with the Central Office Curriculum Department and was nominated to work on a Curriculum Revision Project that began in 1992. Reflecting on that project now, I guess the work never actually ended since one of the major responsibilities of my current job is the mathematics curriculum for our district Kindergarten through grade 12. In 1994, I earned my Masters of Education Degree in Middle Grades Education from Augusta State University and in 1999 completed the additional course requirements to add Leadership to my teaching certificate.

Make a Difference in Your Child's Education
Ever wonder how you as one parent in a world of ever changing issues can have a direct and immediate impact on your child's education?

Simple…get involved in the Parent Teacher Advisory Council ("PTAC"). As PTAC members, we are also members of the Windsor community, parents of school-aged children, business owners, full time employees, and housewives. We are extremely busy parents who believe that being actively involved in our children's education is a priority, not a luxury. The PTAC parents constantly hear local parents complain about issues related to the Windsor schools. Windsor is a great town to live in because the school officials care about your input. So instead of complaining to other parents which ultimately yields no results, why don't you make a commitment to take an active role in bettering your child's education TODAY by getting involved in the Parent Teacher Advisory Council ("PTAC") on a regular basis. In getting involved through the PTAC, you can have a direct impact on decisions related to these very issues.
About PTAC
All Tozer parents are automatically members of the PTAC and are always welcome to attend meetings. This group meets approximately five times a year. The purpose of the PTAC is:
