Educators Attend Workshop at BBSR to Create Internet Curriculum Seven teachers from a variety of schools in the United States, Bermuda and England gathered at the Bermuda Biological Station for Research, June 17-23 1999, for a teacher advisory group workshop created to develop online curriculum for a recently-launched website. The website http://www.coexploration.org/bbsr/coral/, a joint project of the Bermuda Biological Station for Research (BBSR) and The College of Exploration and funded by the Goldman Fund, currently contains educational information on coral reefs and video clips taken in Bermuda. The site will soon feature a "Coral Cam" which will continuously capture underwater video at Bermuda's North Rock, a stunning coral reef environment, and broadcast live on the internet. The workshop participants met during their week-long stay at BBSR to review and modify the current site. They also created lesson plans to compliment the website for use in science classrooms around the world. The educators will also form the core advisory group and help design a web-based online workshop about coral reefs that will be offered to teachers within the next year. ."This group represents a diverse mix of talent," explains College of Exploration coordinator Tina Bishop. "They were chosen based on their extensive experience with science curriculum in K-12 classrooms."

If a Teacher of the Year cannot serve for some reason, the seat remains vacant. Each school's current Teacher of the Year serves a one-year term. One principal-selected teacher serves a two-year term. Principal-selected representatives join and leave the council on alternating years. This guarantees the full council will not be completely depleted at any one time. Schools with 101 teachers or more get a second principal-selected teacher member. Meet

Teacher Advisory Council works to help Wake teachers and students
February 11, 2002 - A new teachers advisory council has begun tackling some of the tough issues that teachers say will help them be more effective in the classroom. Superintendent Bill McNeal created the council after holding a series of forums last year where teachers voiced their concerns to McNeal and his administrative cabinet. Kim Hughes, a Wake County teacher and former State Teacher of the Year, helped organize the forums last year and has worked with McNeal in developing the council this year. "We're creating something new," said Hughes who served on the Governor's Teacher Advisory Committee. "With Gov. Hunt, I saw the state Teachers Advisory Committee really make a difference. Bill McNeal's strong commitment to leaving no child behind, coupled with his openness to teachers' ideas made this idea a reality. It was a good way to give Wake County teachers an ongoing voice in our system."

All students have an assigned Teacher-Advisor at CIS. The Teacher-Advisor helps students make the transition from Elementary to Secondary School and assists them and their parents in making decisions about courses and future goals. The Teacher-Advisor maintains regular contact with students throughout the school year in order to monitor progress in course work and in other aspects of school life. Each student, with his/her Teacher-Advisor, will complete his/her annual education plan and serves as a key school contact for parents.
Annual Education Plans
Every student in Grade 9 through 12 prepares an Annual Education Plan with assistance from parents and his/her teacher advisor. The plan identifies:
  • The student's goals for academic achievement Course selections for the following year Co-curricular activities Plans for exploring careers Post-secondary education goals

    SPOTLIGHT
New Teacher Advisory Council Injects Classroom Realities Into Education Research
W hen Elizabeth "Betty" Carvellas became president of the National Association of Biology Teachers, she was automatically made a member of the Council of Scientific Society Presidents, an elite group of leaders of scientific organizations. At one of her first council meetings, Carvellas felt intimidated by the achievements of most participants, who included a nuclear physicist and a rocket scientist. She didn't have a doctorate. Only a few other women were there. She figured her expertise in the classroom mattered little. "I just kept my mouth shut," she recalled. Her outlook soon changed. When reflecting back on the council's science and math education subcommittee, she quipped: "I very quickly realized that they had little knowledge about what was happening in education. ... I also found out that once I spoke up, they really did want to know." Nearly 10 years later, she's still involved with the Washington, D.C.-based council as a steering committee member. Because Carvellas knows what it feels like to squelch one's own insights and opinions, she's ecstatic about a new National Academies initiative to make K-12 teachers' voices a more influential part of discussions and agenda-setting within the scientific research enterprise starting with the Academies. The endeavor, called the Teacher Advisory Council (TAC), has gathered 11 stellar teachers from across the country including Carvellas to infuse the "wisdom of practice" perspectives of top-notch teachers in the Academies' education-research proposals and current projects, as well as in its many outreach activities that target educators.
