ZACHARY TAYLOR 12th U.S. President A hero of the war with Mexico in 1846, Zachary Taylor was the first U.S. President who was "regular army". Nicknamed "Old Rough and Ready" while in the army, Taylor was not so tough as president. He was nominated by the Whigs and elected because of his military reputation and southern roots, not because of his politics, whatever they may have been. He died after a five-day illness, having served just sixteen months in office. He was replaced by Millard Fillmore
Extra credit : Because he spent much of his adult life soldiering, Taylor did not vote until he was 62 years old.

He also promised to use the army to put down any secessionist movement. But he died before he could take decisive government action. “Zachary Taylor was raised near the Kentucky frontier on the family farm. There were no schools, so he studied with tutors. He joined the army in his teens and had a military career for forty years. He fought in many battles and became a hero. The Whig Party recognized his popularity and drafted him as their nominee. He was the first military leader to become president without hold a political office previously. He realized he lacked experience so he sought advice from others, but his decisions were always based on his perception of each situation. Slaver and the extension of slavery in the newly acquired western land were the main issues of his term. They were never resolved however, because he died suddenly after only sixteen months in office.” On Line Lesson Plans: Zachary Taylor Polk from TeacherVision

  • Through a compromise with the British over a northern border, Polk managed to gain the territory which now make up Washington and Oregon. This made Polk the first president to run the country extending from the Atlantic Ocean all the way to the Pacific Ocean. It was during President Polk’s term in 1845 that the abolitionist and escaped slave Frederick Douglass wrote his autobiography, endangering his own freedom by doing so. President Polk believed that the United States had a "manifest destiny" to expand. His attempts to gain more of Texas, New Mexico, and California led to the Mexican War. The invention of the revolver by Samuel Colt helped the U.S. to win this war and gain five hundred thousand square miles of land. Polk had promised to serve only one term in office. True to his word he retired at the end of his term. He died only three months after

Photograph of the Four Presidents ( Reagan Carter Ford Nixon ) toasting in the Blue Room prior to leaving for Egypt and Sadat's Funeral, 10/08/1981 (National Archives) Summary of the United States President's duties The head of state of the United States is called the President, who also serves the functions of chief executive and commander in chief of the armed forces. By current law, the U.S. president serves a four-year term and may only be re-elected once, as a result of the twenty-second amendment to the U.S. Constitution. In slang, the President of the United States is sometimes called POTUS. The wife of the President is known as the First Lady. Relative to many of the heads of head from around the world, who often hold largely ceremonial powers, United States Presidents are capable of a large degree of meaningful political action. They can veto any legislation passed by the two houses of Congress. (Overriding a President's veto requries a full two-thirds majority in each house of Congress.) They appoint the heads of the various government agencies. Although the Congress must approve the government's annual budget, it is prepared for them by the President. Though constrained by various other laws passed by Congress, the President's executive branch conducts most foreign policy, and his power to order and direct troops as commander-in-chief is quite significant. (The exact limits of what a President can do with the military without Congressional authorization are open to debate.)

Monday, March 5, 1849
Elected by the American people to the highest office known to our
laws, I appear here to take the oath prescribed by the Constitution, and, in
compliance with a time-honored custom, to address those who are now assembled.
The confidence and respect shown by my countrymen in calling me to
be the Chief Magistrate of a Republic holding a high rank among the nations
of the earth have inspired me with feelings of the most profound gratitude;
but when I reflect that the acceptance of the office which their partiality
has bestowed imposes the discharge of the most arduous duties and involves
the weightiest obligations, I am conscious that the position which I have
been called to fill, though sufficient to satisfy the loftiest ambition, is surrounded by fearful responsibilities. Happily, however, in the performance

    Zachary Taylor, 1784-1850
    America's 12th president, Zachary Taylor, was the first career soldier to serve as Chief Executive. A hero of the Mexican-American War, Taylor was faced with the secession of the Southern states over slavery and turmoil over new territories. A plantation owner who held over 100 slaves, Zachary Taylor died suddenly in office of acute indigestion on July 9th, 1850. Zachary Taylor, known through his career as "Rough and Ready", was himself the son of a war hero and statesman. The son of Richard Taylor, a Revolutionary War officer who became a successful plantation owner on a 6,000 acre war bonus, Zachary Taylor was the 3rd of 9 children. Shortly after his birth on November 24th, 1784 the Taylor family left Montebello Virginia for a new plantation in Kentucky near what is now Louisville. Richard Taylor became a member of the Kentucky state legislature and was later appointed customs collector for the port of Louisville by president George Washington Despite his family's affluence, Zachary Taylor received very little education beyond those rudiments needed to run the family cotton fields. Though his youth was spent overseeing the operation of the plantation with his father, Zachary Taylor opted instead for the military. Taylor's first enlistment came in 1806 in a state militia, and was followed in 1808 by an appointment to the 7th Infantry by his second cousin, Secretary of State James Madison. Taylor entered the 7th as a lieutenant, and spent 40 years as a soldier.
