Zachary Taylor Northerners and Southerners disputed sharply whether the territories wrested from Mexico should be opened to slavery, and some Southerners even threatened secession. Standing firm, Zachary Taylor was prepared to hold the Union together by armed force rather than by compromise. Born in Virginia in 1784, he was taken as an infant to Kentucky and raised on a plantation. He was a career officer in the Army, but his talk was most often of cotton raising. His home was in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and he owned a plantation in Mississippi. But Taylor did not defend slavery or southern sectionalism; 40 years in the Army made him a strong nationalist.

UIS student finds 1814 indictment on president Zachary Taylor
Samantha Edmondson Daily Egyptian Vance Martin has skimmed over several famous names within state documents during his master's work at the Illinois State Archives. But an assault and battery charge involving America's 12th president was one to pull out of the pile. In January, Martin found an 1814 indictment for assault and battery for a Maj. Zachariah Taylor that was sent to the Illinois State Archives a couple of years ago. He recently confirmed the person indicted was, in fact, former president Zachary Taylor. Within a few months, the SIUC Illinois Regional Archives Depository will release the document for public accessibility after its main headquarters in Springfield has finished it. Because he was studying history for his degree, Martin was assigned to process record projects at the state archives through the Graduate Public Service Internship through the University of Illinois at Springfield. Karl Moore, supervisor at the depository in Springfield, gave Martin a project in fall to process some documents sent from SIUE that date back to 1812. After completion, the documents were to be sent to the SIUC depository for filing.

    Longevity of U.S. Presidents
    Ed Uthman, MD

Last updated 2 Sep 2000 Everyone knows that the average life span of humans has increased markedly in the 20th century, but has it increased for everyone? An informal study of U.S. presidents may yield some surprising answers. My aim is to look at the effect of medical advances over the last two centuries on the longevity of those who are most likely to have access to those advances. I think presidents make an interesting (if small) sample because of their demographic uniformity: all are white male politicians, almost all are military veterans, and presumably all had sufficient wealth and/or prestige to command whatever medical resources were available in their later years. Of the 41 men who have held the office, 5 are still alive (Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton), 4 were victims of homicide, all from gunfire (Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley, Kennedy)*, and 32 died of natural causes (4 while in office: Harrison, Taylor, Harding, FD Roosevelt). These 32 are listed below by date of death. The "ordinal" figure is the order in which each served as president, Cleveland having served two non-consecutive terms. NAME ORD-

The President of the United States is the head of state of the United States . Under the U.S. Constitution , the President is also the chief executive of the federal government and commander in chief of the armed forces . The president is the principal elected representative of the U.S. citizenry. Because of the superpower status of the United States, the American President is often dubbed "the most powerful person on earth" and the current occupant is often one of the world's best-known figures. During the Cold War , the President was sometimes referred to as "the leader of the free world," a phrase that is still occasionally invoked today. Washington, D. C. Early Years:
Taylor had little or no formal education, except for a small school in Louisville, Kentucky. He worked on his father's plantation until he was 23. He won notoriety as an Indian fighter and became a national hero in the war against Mexico in 1846. His Presidency: The nation was in crisis over slavery, and Taylor opposed a compromise in the face of Southern threats of secession (to leave the Union). The chief accomplishment of his administration was the Clayton-Bulwer Treaty with Great Britain, guaranteeing that neither Britain nor the U. S. would have exclusive control over any future canal through Central America. His Life: Northerners and Southerners disputed sharply whether the territories wrested from Mexico should be opened to slavery, and some Southerners even threatened secession. Standing firm, Zachary Taylor was prepared to hold the Union together by armed force rather than by compromise.

Military Career. In 1808 Taylor joined the regular army as an infantry officer. After distinguishing himself under William Henry Harrison in the War of 1812 and briefly returning to civilian life, he saw active duty on various frontier posts in the Northwest and Louisiana, where he established a second home. He participated in the Black Hawk and Second Seminole wars and in 1838 defeated the Seminole in the Battle of Lake Okeechobee. Although not decisive, this engagement earned him promotion to the rank of brigadier general, and he was given overall command of the campaign against the Seminole in Florida.
Political Career. top Taylor, who had never bothered to vote, had little political experience, but he had quarreled with President James K. Polk and sympathized with the Whigs, and thus seemed a perfect candidate for the opposition. Although he declared himself nonpartisan and was a slave owner, which might have made him unpopular in the North, the Whig party nominated him for the presidency in 1848. In the ensuing election, he defeated both his Democratic and Free-Soil opponents.
Taylor was an adequate but by no means brilliant general, who reached the presidency without preparation at a critical moment. Whether, as has been suggested, a continuation of his hard-line policy toward the South might have prevented the American Civil War will never be known.
