It is an uncritical listing, the software has not been tested or approved by the subgroup in any way. The selection is based on the following criteria:
  • The software helps to manage specimens or observations of biological objects ("units"). Taxonomic tools helping to generate checklists etc. are not included if they do not include unit management functions. The software must be functional and in use by at least one collection (however, some beta versions have been included). The software must be freely available (for free or as a commercial product). It should not need re-programming to be adapted by the new user. Some help in the installation of the software should be available from the authors.

Bivalve Taxonomy
In scientific circles, clams are known as "Bivalves" derived from the Class Bivalvia (also known as Pelecypoda). The term bivalve describes their basic morphological structure - two valves connected by a flexible ligament and an adductor muscle. They belong to the Phylum Mollusca which is also home to the squids and octupus (cephalopods) and snails (gastropods) and five other classes of organisms. (Quick review of scientific taxonomy ). This class comprises about 10,000 living species with many additional ones in the fossil record. "The phylum they belong to "Mollusca", rivals the arthropods (insects) in their diversity of body forms and sizes, as well as their ecological success. Approximately 50,000 species of Molluscs have been described, and because of the shelled forms they have left a rich fossil record." The table below provides an example of these relationships. The base for this data was developed by Dr. R. Hays Cummins who maintains an easy to understand, detailed explanation of scientific classification on his web site The "Nuts and Bolts" of Taxonomy and Classification.

SFI Working Paper Abstract
Title: Robustness in Biological Systems - A Provisional Taxonomy Author(s): David C. Krakauer Files: pdf Paper #: Abstract: Biology is a domain of tension: on the one hand, biology is concerned with transformation and the generation of diversity; on the other hand, biology is concerned with the persistence of improbable structural regularities. Robustness, as a research program, aims to uncover those evolved mechanisms promoting the persistence of regularities. Here I organize mechanisms of robustness into a phenomenological taxonomy, grouping biological mechanisms into principles of robust organization. These include: Redundancy, Purging, Feedback, Modularity, Spatial Compartmentalization, Distributed Processing, and the Extended Phenotype. I review studies in which mechanisms representative of each principle are described. Keywords: robustness, evolution, evolvability, mechanism, complexity

Biological Informatics
What is biological informatics?
A discipline at the crossroads of biology and information technology using computers to solve problems in the life sciences; traditionally with emphasis in the areas of medical, genetic, and molecular biology (see BioTech: Bioinformatics for a review of resources in this field), but increasingly being used more broadly to cover methods for gathering, discovering, and accessing all biological data, to serve the diverse needs of scientists, research biologists, resource managers, decision makers, educators, and the public Some current programs and initiatives utilizing the internet to form clearinghouses and distributed networks of biological information: An Overview of Biodiversity Informatics

SUMMARY OF PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS
GENERAL INFORMATION
Program Title: Partnerships for Enhancing Expertise in Taxonomy (PEET) Synopsis of Program: In partnership with academic institutions, botanical gardens, freshwater and marine institutes, and natural history museums, the National Science Foundation seeks to enhance taxonomic research and help prepare future generations of experts. Through its Special Competition in Systematic Biology, NSF will support competitively reviewed projects that target groups of poorly known organisms for modern monographic research. Projects must train new taxonomists (two per project minimally) and must translate current expertise into electronic databases and other products with broad accessibility to the scientific community.
