Washington Watch: The Evolving Taxonomy of Biological Research
May 2003
by Robert E. Gropp
Thus far, biologists have focused their attention mainly on the committee's attempt to develop a new academic taxonomy. The committee has identified 57 fields in the areas of life sciences, physical and mathematical sciences and engineering, social sciences, and humanities. Biologists have expressed concern about which fields within life sciences would be assessed and ultimately ranked. Their trepidation is based on the impact that previous NRC assessments have had on academic departmental organization: Research universities tend to align their academic units with fields recognized and ranked by NRC.
Scott D. Russell, George Lynn Cross Research Professor of Botany at the University of Oklahoma and president of the Botanical Society of America, believes prior changes in research taxonomy have constrained academic disciplines. "The taxonomy has had an eerily predictive relationship in determining departmental alignments and resource allocations. During prior realignments, new departments were formed and organismal [research] diversity decreased as research programs began to focus on a limited number of model organisms, humans being the most conspicuous." Russell thinks past assessments have resulted in insufficient appreciation for "the intrinsic value of diversity in academic disciplines and of organismal diversity."

c. viii + 365 Chapter abstracts How to Order During the past decade we have witnessed a mushrooming of papers in the area of medical mycology; detailing major advances in areas such as genomics, molecular and cellular biology, molecular epidemiology, immune response and vaccine development, and strategies to combat infections in humans. This sheer volume of information makes it extremely difficult for the busy research scientist and/or teacher of medical mycology to keep abreast of all the latest advances. This book, together with its companion volume "Pathogenic Fungi: Host Interactions and Emerging Strategies for Control", brings together expert international authors who critically review current topics, and through the provision of extensive reference sections positively encourage readers to pursue the subject in greater detail. Essential reading for everyone with an interest in medical mycology including: mycologists, biotechnologists, molecular biologists, and pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies.

Systematic and Evolutionary Biology
Carole Hickman, Department of Integrative Biology University of California, Berkeley, California What themes unify systematic and evolutionary biology? Systematics is the study of patterns of diversity in living and fossil organisms. It is the foundation of organismal biology. The theory of evolution, which unifies modern biology, emerged from systematics. Systematists have united globally to state their mission and agenda for the year 2000. The three elements of this mission are to: discover, describe, and inventory global species diversity. analyze and synthesize information derived from this global discovery effort into a predictive classification system that reflects the history of life. organize information from this global program into an efficiently retrievable form that best meets the needs of science and society.

First Base: Brain Size Matters
Researchers at the University of Chicago have discovered a gene that controls the size of the brain. Or so it appears. The new study, published online by Bruce Lahn and colleagues in the journal Human Molecular Genetics , focused on an intriguing gene called ASPM, which stands for Abnormal Spindle-like Microcephaly associated gene. As the name suggests, ASPM has been shown to be mutated in patients with microcephaly, associated with sharply reduced size of the cerebral cortex. Reasoning that the ASPM gene may have played an important role in the increase in brain mass during evolution, Lahn’s team compared the sequence of the human ASPM Lahn’s group compared the rate of sequence changes that produce changes in the structure of the protein (and are therefore presumed to be under evolutionary pressure) with those that do not affect the protein sequence. The protein-coding changes were much more prevalent in the human lineage, strongly hinting at positive Darwinian selection. “I was quite surprised to see that this one gene shows such strong and unambiguous signatures of adaptive evolution — more so than most other genes we’ve studied.” Future studies will focus on the functional relevance of the changes that Lahn’s group has documented.

    Convenor: Dr. Anita Malhotra
    Aims of Module
This module is in three parts. 1. Part 1 aims to familiarise students with the principles and practice of taxonomy. 2. Part 2 aims to demonstrate the internal digestive and locomotory anatomy of a bird, and to encourage the dissecting and scientific drawing skills of the students. 3. Part 3 aims to familiarise students with the basics of tetrapod locomotion, various gaits and the nature and consequences of legless tetrapod locomotion.
    Summary of Course Content
This module is in three parts. Part 1 allows students to explore the principles and practice of taxonomy (the science of classifying organims) in relation to a named animal group of their own choice. Part 2 investigates the physical locomotory and digestive attributes of birds through the medium of dissection, and will relate the structure of these systems to their primary function. Part 3 covers the basic form of tetrapod locomotion and its variants, and the consequent co-adaptation of other systems for limbless locomotion.

This comprehensive coverage of all aspects of the pathogen Rhizoctonia developed from the Second International Symposium on Rhizoctonia The aim of the book was to summarise the vast amount of information that has accumulated on all aspects of Rhizoctonia Rhizoctonia solani Rhizoctonia held in Florida in 1965. Rhizoctonia is a soilborne fungus that has occupied the attention of mycologists and pathologists for almost 200 years. Members of this genus are significant pathogens on some of the most important plant species grown throughout the world, including cereals, cotton, sugarbeet, potato and other field crops, vegetables and horticultural crops, pasture species, turfgrasses and forest trees. Other members are mycorrhizal, some are saprophytes and some are biocontrol agents. There are 50 chapters in the book (including the introduction), with seven on taxonomy and evolution (three on classical methods and four on biochemical and molecular methods), four on genetics and pathogenicity, two on plant-pathogen interactions, seven on ecology and disease dynamics, 15 on disease occurrence and management in different crops and 14 on disease control (three on cultural control, seven on biological control, two on disease resistance, one on chemical control and one on integrated control).

Taxonomy Carolus Linnaeus 's Scientific classification of organisms, the root is the Organism (as this applies to all living things, it is implied rather than stated explicitly). Below this are the Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, and Species, with various other ranks sometimes inserted. Some have argued that the human mind naturally organizes its knowledge of the world into such systems. This view is often based on the epistemology of Immanuel Kant Anthropologists have observed that taxonomies are generally embedded in local cultural and social systems, and serve various social functions. Perhaps the most well-known and influential study of folk taxonomies is Emile Durkheim 's The Elementary Forms of Religious Life . The theories of Kant and Durkheim also influenced Claude Levi-Strauss , the founder of anthropological structuralism . Levi-Strauss wrote two important books on taxonomies; Totemism and The Savage Mind Such taxonomies as those analyzed by Durkheim and Levi-Strauss are sometimes called folk taxonomies to distinguish them from scientific taxonomies that claim to be disembedded from social relations and thus objective and universal. The most well-known and widely used scientific taxonomy is
