91. Tatting
tatting is a type of knotted lace. A shuttle and thread are used to make the lace. The stitch is formed over the hand. Samples of my tatting Projects
http://www.corporaterefugee.com/tatting.html
Email T atting is a type of knotted lace. A shuttle and thread are used to make the lace. The stitch is formed over the hand. While the resulting lace looks quite delicate, tatting is actually simple to do. The tatted piece is made up of basically ‘two half hitch’ knots which are used not as a clove hitch, but as a Lark’s Head knot (also Cow Hitch) where the second half hitch is formed to vertically mirror the first half hitch. This double stitch is used over and over to form a pattern. Extra thread used between double stitches creates"picots" or loops of thread. From The Tatter’s Treasure Chest: "The history of tatting can be traced back over 200 years. It originally developed as anattempt to reproduce the expensive Venetian laces of the sixteenth century, but it has long since come to be appreciated for its own particular beauty." Additional history of the Art can be found in Tatting Technique and History, by Elgiva Nicholls. Some books I particularly like and use a lot because the instructions are presented in a manner that is easy to read:

Quilting Knitting is similar in origin to weaving and to the netting and knotting of fishnets and snares. The Scots claimed its invention and also its introduction into France. Hand-knitting needles are of bone, wood, steel, ivory, or celluloid. Two needles with heads are required for flat or selvage work; three or more, pointed at both ends, for tubular work such as hose; and for larger tubular work, a circular needle. The first knitting machine, invented in England in 1589 by William Lee, was refused a patent by Queen Elizabeth on the grounds that it would curtail the work of hand knitters. In 1864, William Cotton patented a machine by which garments and the heels and toes of hosiery might be shaped. Automatic machines were first introduced in 1889. In weft knitting, which includes hand knitting, the fabric is constructed in horizontal courses with one continuous yarn. The basic stitches are the plain, purl, and rib. Knitting Workbook This is more than a guide to basic knitting techniques!

We would love to feature your designs and creations so please, join in and grow with us. If you already have a website, please add it to our links database so others can find you. I'm in the process of building the site and writing a bunch of PHP code to make your experience as professional as I can. If you have any ideas or suggestions, please write me and I'll try to implement them as soon as possible. Susie and I are excited to bring you some of the more interesting projects available so we are searching daily to find collections all over the world that are new and different.
