    68. Beaded Tatting: Plan The Picots First
so that it flattens out and then slide the bead from the sewing thread onto For more info on beaded tatting see Rebecca Jones, The Complete Book of tatting
    http://www.georgiaseitz.com/classes/beads.html
The following expanded discussion of beading is an excerpt from Book 6 of the Ribbonwinners Series, "Tatting Talk: A Self-Improvement Guide for Tatters". Georgia Seitz 1998. Reprinted by permission.
Beads are added to tatting in two basic manners. 1. Beads are threaded onto the shuttle and/or ball threads and brought into postition as the double stitches are formed. (See the three gold beads on one picot in the scan below.) 2. Beads are added to previous segments of tatting usually during joining. (See the red bead over the picot in the scan above.) If you want to have beads on the rings, the beads must be threaded onto the shuttle thread as the thread is wound onto the shuttle. If working with a particular color sequence or pattern of beads, the beads must be threaded on in the reverse order of working, i.e., the first bead needed is the last bead to be threaded. Rainbow earring designed and shared by Sharon Briggs. Pattern follows. If you want to have beads on the chains, the beads must be threaded on the ball thread. If you want beads on both the rings and the chains, thread the beads needed for the chains first, mark with pin or paperclip, then the beads needed for the rings. Next wind the thread onto the shuttle moving the beads into position.

Reversing Work: (T or RW in patterns)
Notice that the stitches cause your work to curve clockwise (counter-clockwise if you're working left-handed). Turning or reversing your work curves the rings or chains in the opposite direction. Suppose you are closing a ring. You pull on the shuttle thread and the stitches meet. As you look at the completed ring, the shuttle and ball threads should be hanging down. To reverse your work, simply flip it so that the bottom of the ring is now where the top was. Turn it over as if you were flipping over a coin. Joins: (indicated by a J or a '+' in patterns)
Picots, as mentioned before, are often used in joining rings and chains. There are two basic kinds of joins: the simple "join" and the shuttle or "locking" join. The shuttle join is described after the simple join. Suppose you want to join a current ring to the last picot on the previous ring. Bring the picot on the previous ring close to the top of the hand thread. With the point of the shuttle, a crochet hook, or a pin, go through the picot and hook the hand thread [See Figure 12] and pull it through the picot. [See Figure 13]
    [Figure 12]
[Figure 13] The loop of thread coming through the picot must be large enough to pass your shuttle through it. You may need to close up the fingers of your left hand a little to get some slack in the hand thread as you pull it through the picot.

    Other Antique Handmade Lace
from the collection of Marla Mallett
In addition to needlepoint and bobbin lace techniques, a variety of structures have been used to create stunning open, lacy fabrics: netting, crochet, cutwork, knitting, tatting, embroidery and appliqué among them. Although these sometimes copied the more expensive and labor intensive laces, all were used creatively at times to produce fascinating textiles that were far more than "imitation lace." Indeed, some of these structures were among the earliest laces.
Click on the links below to see larger photos and magnified details of the structures. The laces below have all been sold, and are posted here solely for informational purposes.
    Filet Lace
Plain knotted netting was made with a small shuttle and gauge rod, then the net was stretched on a frame and patterns needle-woven into the net. Originally called "lacis," this was one of the oldest forms of lacemaking one used frequently in 16th and 17th century Italy. The technique was revived in the mid 19th century and adopted enthusiastically by Victorians. Like many other laces, the technique was widely copied by machine processes well into the 20th century, but handmade examples are easily identified. Small individual fishermen's knots can be seen at each corner of the square-meshed netting. In the purest pieces, designs were produced solely in linen weave, while in others, longer darning stitches were used for contrast. [L-295]*
