Total Fishing.

ECOVIEWS TASMANIAN DEVILS ARE NOT ALL BAD By Whit Gibbons Last month I saw one of the most incredible animals left on earth, a wild Tasmanian devil. This, as the saying goes, is a sight to behold, one not granted to just everyone. I was in the company of about 80 wildlife biologists from mainland Australia, most of whom had never been to Tasmania, let alone seen a devil, as they call it, in the wild. This creature is not the cartoon character familiar to many of usthe caricature of an enraged animal spinning around and around in circles. It is the largest native carnivorous marsupial left anywhere in the country of Australia. The Tasmanian tiger, also known as the Tasmanian wolf or thylacine, was much larger than the Tasmanian devil but is believed to have been driven to extinction by humans in the early to mid-1900s. Tasmania, one of the Australian states, is the big island south of Melbourne, with the next stop being Antarctica. For some reason, it is not the first place a mainland Australian chooses to visit, so the proportion of Australian natives that have seen a devil in its natural habitat is small. And since devils became extinct on the mainland at least a few hundred years ago, Tasmania is where you must be to see a wild one. The present-day Tasmanian attitude today toward these feisty little beasts is to be admired. They are completely protected by the Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service and are the icon of wild nature, representing a "clean green" environmental image Tasmanians are proud of. Early settlers nearly eliminated the devils by trapping or poisoning them, along with Tasmanian tigers, because of misguided notions that they harmed enough livestock to warrant making them extinct, reminiscent of our own country's attitudes toward animals that were in any way regarded as a nuisance or an inconvenience.

Fauna of Tasmania Does the Tasmanian Devil exist? Yes, the Tasmanian Devil does exist. In fact, there is not simply one Tasmanian Devil, but many of them scattered throughout Tasmania. The devil is nocturnal and was named by early European settlers because of its eerie growl, which starts as a kind of whistle and ends in a bark. Devils grow up to 2 feet (60 cm) in length excluding tail, and are known for their foul tempers. They generally scavenge on dead animals of all kinds, but may eat other small mammals or reptiles. Tasmanian Devils have some of the strongest jaws of any animal, and generally eat the entirety of their prey. One time a family of Devils were found to have eaten a horse and left only the skull and tail. While the real devil may sound a little like the cartoon version, be assured that they walk on all four legs and do not spin around like a tornado (they're just a bit slower)! TASMANIAN DEVIL
Back to Fauna Index The Tasmanian Devil is the largest carnivorous (eats meat) marsupial (a mammal that has its babies in a pouch) in Australia. Tasmanian Devils are a nocturnal (active at night) animal. lives alone and prefers its own company hence it is a relatively shy animal
DESCRIPTION

The Tasmanian Devil is usually black with a white "collar" or patch around its neck. It is the size of a small terrier dog very solid and "stout" and weighs in between 6 and 8 kgs It has a tail of between 9 to 12" long
Tasmanian Devils have an extremely large powerful head with a wide jaw with sharp teeth pointy pink ears (that turn red when angry due to increased blood flow) and piercing dark eyes
Its dark colouring helps it to move around unseen at night time (feeding time)
The Tasmanian Devil is now only found on the island state of Tasmania and lives in coastal scrub and eucalypt forests. It is a scavenger so Tasmanian Devils are also found near human settlements
They spend the daytime out of sight sleeping in dens lined with grass and leaves made in hollow logs, or old wombat burrows or small natural caves They can conserve energy by going into a state of "Tupor" where its body heat drops to match its surroundings

The single living species, S. harrisii , is now found only in Tasmania. Once it also occupied much of the Australian mainland ( Calaby and White 1967), but it probably disappeared before European settlement, though competition with the introduced dingo (Canis familiaris dingo) . Subfossil remains indicate that it or a closely related species still was present as recently as 3,120 years ago in the Northern Territory ( Dawson 1982a), 400 years ago in southwestern Australia ( Baynes 1982), and 600 years ago in Victoria (Guiler, in Strahan 1983). Living specimens collected in Victoria in 1912 and 1971 are generally thought to have escaped from captivity ( Guiler Ride
Head and body length is about 525-800 mm and tail length is about 230-300 mm. A series of specimens of males weighed 5.5-11.8 kg and a series of females weighed 4.1-8.1 kg ( Green 1967). The coloration is blackish brown or black except for a white throat patch, usually one or two white patches on the rump and sides, and the pinkish white snout.
The general form, except for the tail, resembles that of a small bear. The head is short, broad, and covered with masses of muscle; the skull and teeth are extremely massive and rugged. The molar teeth are developed into heavy bone crushers in a manner reminiscent of the hyenas. The first toe is not present, and the granular pads of the feet lack striations. The pouch during the breeding season is a completely closed receptacle, unlike that of many dasyurids. There are four mammae.

One time a family of Devils were found to have eaten a horse and left only the skull and tail. When feeding on roadkill, Devils generally eat everything including bones, fur and feet. Devils live for about seven years in their natural habitat of dry bush and scrub land. They were originally considered pests by farmers but are now appreciated for their ability in keeping down the numbers of crop-eaters such as mice. They are rarely seen because of their nocturnal nature, but tame Devils (can be touched) called Fie and Fum live at the Talune Wildlife Park. For those with hardy stomachs, Devil feeding takes place at the Tasmanian Devil Park at Taranna (near Port Arthur), 11 am daily, and also at the Trowunna Wildlife Park near Mole Creek.

Tasmanian Devils. Man's New Best Friend?
by John Hawkins Tasmanian devils have recently become very popular exotic pets in our country. Everyday more and more people forego getting more traditional pets like cats and dogs to purchase lovable tasmanian devils. Although Tasmanian Devils (known as devils from this point on) have gotten a bad rap from the cute but destructive Loony Toons character Taz, they are really some of the best and most lovable pets anyone can have. Let's find out a little more about our new, furry, friends shall we? Devils are the size of small dogs and they are noted for several physical traits. They have such incredibly powerful jaws that they're known as the "rotweiller of Tasmania." Tasmanian Devils are capable of biting through plastic, bone, and even steel if startled. They also have a luxurious, oily coat. Although their coat is gorgeous, you may want to be prepared for what Tasmanian natives call "ooklaboocha." It's a dark, slimy, dank smelling, grease like trail that devils on everything they touch. Furthermore, devils also can't stand water. Devils have been known to go into day long "psychotic rages" when forced to take baths. This is understandable because any devils that come into contact with water almost immediately break out with huge, green, festering , rashes that takes months to heal. During this time, devils grow very confused and anxious and are known to endlessly run in circles and smash into walls at full speed.

Their Latin name, Sarcophilus Harrisili means they are meat eaters who live mainly in forests. Tasmanian Devils are usually almost all black in color with a band of white on the chest or chin area. Most Devils are about the size of a small dog. The Tamanian Devil is very short. In length, they measure at only 3 0r 4 feet. They were originally found in Australia. Today they can only be found in Tasmania, This is mostly due to the Dingo (dog like animal) that competed against the Tasmanian Devil for food. Devils are marsupials. Marsupials are mammals that have pouches for carrying their young. The Tasmanian Devils' closest relative is the Quoll. These animals are also carnivorous and are the size of a cat. Devils mate in March. The male and female do not stay together very long. Devils only stay long enough to mate. Their babies are born in April. Due to the fact that the Mothers' pouch is not large enough for all of the babies, only 2-3 babies survive. The pregnancy only lasts for 21 days.

FORT WAYNE, IND. The only Tasmanian Devil you'll find left in the United States is in a Bugs Bunny cartoon. The last of the Tasmanian devils known to be living outside their native Australia died Tuesday at the Fort Wayne Children's Zoo, zoo officials said. Zookeepers learned last month that the 7 1/2-year-old marsupial named Coolah had inoperable cancer. Coolah was born in January 1997 at the Cincinnati Zoo and came to Fort Wayne through a loan agreement with the Toronto Zoo. The Fort Wayne zoo, citing records maintained by the International Species Inventory System, said that Coolah was the last of the animals outside Australia since the death last August of a female Tasmanian devil at the San Diego Zoo. The Fort Wayne zoo had 12 devils in the past 17 years as it placed an emphasis on a Tasmanian devil exhibit in its Australian Adventure section.

Tasmanian Devil Sarcophilus harrisii
The Tasmanian Devil is the largest surviving meat-eating Australian marsupial. Once common on mainland Australia, devils are now found in all Tasmanian habitats, including outer city suburbs. Being mainly carrion-eaters, they use their powerful jaws, with a gape of 120 degrees, to consume every part of animal corpses, including the skulls. Tasmanian Devils have an unusual "rocking-horse" gait and are not fast movers, so hunting is not one of their typical behaviours. A litter of 2-4 young is carried in the backwards-facing pouch for 15 weeks. After this time they ride on the mother's back or follow at heel.

Tasmanian Devil’s Death Marks End of Era at Zoo Coolah, the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo’s only Tasmanian devil and the last devil to live anywhere in the world outside Australia, died today. He was 7-1/2 years old. Zoo keepers learned last month that Coolah had inoperable cancer. “We provided supportive care to keep Coolah comfortable,” says Australian Adventure Zoologist Elaine Kirchner. But it became clear this week that Coolah’s quality of life had deteriorated, and the zoo staff made the difficult decision to euthanize Coolah. A necropsy was to be performed this afternoon by Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo veterinarian Dr. Joe Smith and was expected to confirm the cancer diagnosis.

Scientific classification
Scientific classification
refers to how biologists group and categorize extinct and living species of organisms. Modern classification has its roots in the system of Carolus Linnaeus, who grouped species according to shared physical characteristics. These groupings have been revised since Linnaeus to improve consistency with the Darwinian principle of common descent. Molecular systematics, which uses Genomic DNA analysis has driven many recent revisions and is likely to continue to do so. Scientific classification belongs to the science of taxonomy or biological systematics.
