Robert McKimson (director) and Sid Marcus (writer) For a man who, according to many published accounts, had virtually no sense of humor, producer Eddie Selzer was responsible for some very funny cartoons. For example, his dictum that bullfights weren't funny inspired director Chuck Jones to make Bully for Bugs Devil May Hare was released on June 19, 1954, he made it absolutely clear that there were to be no more cartoons about a stupid-looking, unfunny character like that. And since he was the man officially in charge of the Warner Bros. cartoon department, the boss of all the directors working there, that was the end of the matter. But Selzer, too, had a boss. Jack Warner, the Warner Bros. mogul himself, had enjoyed Devil May Hare, and asked Selzer why that wonderful character hadn't been used again. Selzer quickly issued new orders, and The Tasmanian Devil was back on the screen with Bedeviled Rabbit

TAZ-MANIA
Original Medium: Television Animation
Released by: Warner Bros.
First Appeared: At first glance, the lead character of Taz-Mania looks a lot like The Tasmanian Devil, that animated eating machine who appeared in several Warner Bros. cartoons in the 1950s and '60s. He even sounds similar, and has the same name, at least to the extent that the old Taz had Taz-Mania was just one of several attempts the producer made in the 1990s, to expand the franchise of its old-time hits. Another was a series of mystery stories built around Sylvester Pussycat and Tweety Bird. The idea wasn't to create a new body of classic work about classic characters, but to capitalize on merchandising icons. As long as the new material sort of reminded viewers of the old stuff, it was doing its job. Even Michigan J. Frog, who, by his original characterization, is the most unreliable performer in toon history, was trotted out out on stage every night to act as "host" to the WB TV network. Compared with that, a half-hour domestic comedy about the least domestic character the studio ever had is nothing. Taz-Mania Still, the fact that he did show up for work regularly, and didn't try to eat other family members, is very much at odds with Taz of the Looney Tunes days.

Carnivorous and scavenging marsupial now restricted to Tasmania. The animal was formerly widely distributed in Australia as well but, because farmers believed that it killed large numbers of livestock and poultry, it was exterminated there. The Tasmanian devil is actually a very inefficient killer, and eats mostly carrion. It is 52 to 80 cm (20 to 31 in) in head and body length, with a tail 23 to 30 cm (9 to 12 in) long, and weighs 4.1 to 11.8 kg (9 to 26 lb). Its pelt is blackish or brownish, except for white patches commonly present on the throat or other parts. It stays in burrows or in dense brush during the day and, at night, preys on rodents, lizards, wallabies, and other small animals, but are also known to scavenge on dead animals of all kinds and devour anything which attacks them, including other Devils. Tasmanian Devils have some of the strongest jaws out of any animal, and generally eat the entirety of their prey. One time a family of Devils were found to have eaten a horse and left only the skull and tail.

The devils of Tasmania are the largest of the remaining carnivorous marsupials. They are endemic to Tasmanian the island state of Australia. Although there is evidence that they were on the mainland of Australia about 600years ago.
The Tasmanian devil is the size of a small dog and can be tamed if hand raised from a 12 week old joey as we have done at Talune Wildlife Park. The devil is normally a shy animal seldom seen by people even when they are out walking in Tasmania's 'bush' (forests). Tasmanian devils are scavengers eating anything from grubs, lizards to dead wallaby and other larger marsupials as well as carcases of dead domestic stock, however, they are killers and will 'dog' the pray from many miles bringing down wallaby, small wombats, and other marsupials. They can be seen scavenging on beaches eating sea weed and small animals in the flotsam washed ashore. The odd old boot (hiker and camper beware) is regarded as an acceptable meal for a hungry devil.

Tasmanian Devil

Female - 6kg Status - Common
The Tasmanian Devil is a small, dog size, carnivorous marsupial found only in Tasmania, the island state of Australia. The Devil is black in colour often with white flashes in the chest and the rump. Like most of Australia animals the devil is nocturnal, hunting by night and sleeping during the day. Is a scavenger, however it will kill, eating anything from an old boot, grubs and insects, small reptiles, birds, eggs and mammals as large as wallaby. The devil is known for its very powerful jaw having one of the strongest bites for an animal of its size
The female devil has a backward opening pouch or marsupium, that has four nipples in it, so she can only raise four young an a time. The females come in season in March (autumn or the fall, in the southern hemisphere.) the young are born 31 days after mating and as many as 20 young may be born, it is only the first four that make it to the nipples in the pouch that will survive. The young 'joeys' stay in the pouch for about 15 weeks and are dependent on the female for about another 15 weeks. Devils are found all over Tasmania, in dry and rain forest habitats. They live in hollow logs, small caves and can dig small cave type 'borrows'. Devils only live for about 5-6 years in the wild. The species is secure in the wild and has probably increased since European settlement.

The latest NPR/National Geographic Radio Expedition is to the island of Tasmania to meet the legendary Tasmanian devil. This ferocious animal, named for its nasty disposition and island of origin, is unlike the Warner Brothers cartoon character a small, black marsupial that walks on four legs. Roughly the size of a large beagle, the devil is characterized by its sharp teeth, aggressive stance and voracious appetite.
Tasmanian devils are found only on Tasmania, an island off the southern coast of Australia. And surprisingly, their population is increasing. Wildlife experts believe there are more devils alive now than there were before the introduction of roads and cars. A major reason for the population boom is industrialization, a phenomenon that normally destroys native species. The Tasmanian devil has adapted to development by turning to a new food source roadkill.
National Geographic photographer David Doubilet journeyed to Tasmania and spoke to John and Carolyn Hamilton, proprietors of a local wildlife center where orphaned and injured devils are taken in, rehabilitated, and when possible, released.

Tasmanian Devil Sarcophilus laniarus The single living species of Sarcophilus today is harrasii, found only in Tasmania. It porbably one occupied most of the Australian mainland, but was in direct competition with the introduced dingo.
Head and body length is from 525 - 800 mm with tail length from 230 - 300 mm. Males range in weight from 5.5 - 11.8 kg. and females between 4.1 and 8.1 kg. Overall coloration is blackish brown or black with a white throat patch, one or two white patches on the rump and sides and a pinkish snout.
Tasmanian Devils have short, broad skulls covered with masses of muscle. The molar teeth are developed into extremely strong bone crushers, like those of hyenas. The diet consists of a variety of vertebrates and invertebrates including poisonous snakes, and a small amount of plant material. The main food source is carrion, as the Tasmanian Devil is an inefficient killer. Preferred are wallabies, wombats, sheep, and rabbits. Every part of the carcass is consumed, including the fur and bones.

Sarcophilus harrisii The Tasmanian Devil was named by early European settlers because of its spine chilling screeches, black coat and ‘bad temper’. When angry its ears go red which could be another reason why it got its ‘devilish’ name. It will open its mouth when scared or uncertain, rather than as a sign of aggression. Fierce noises such as harsh coughs, snarls and high pitched screeches are used in defence.
Photo: Robert Dockerill The Tasmanian Devil is the world’s largest living carnivorous marsupial and is nocturnal (active at night). It is about the size of a small dog and has a strong, stocky body, with a large, broad head and a short, thick tail. The body is black with white markings on the chest and rump, though some can be entirely black. Males grow larger than females and have a broader, thicker neck and larger head. Males weigh between 9-12kg and females between 7-9kg. The Tasmanian Devil travels through dense vegetation or along tracks in the forest. When it runs, its hind feet are kept together in a hopping type action. Young devils are very good climbers in comparison to the adults.

The Tasmanian Devil
Tasmanian Devils are large meat-eating marsupials. They have large powerful jaws and teeth. (The jaws have a gape of 120 degrees). They are black in colour, with a white band on the chest and hindquarters and have hairless pink ears. The slightly smaller females have a backward-opening pouch.
Wild Tasmanian Devils often appear battle-scarred and have bald patches on their coats.
Tasmanian Devils are found in all Tasmanian habitats, including rainforests, eucalyptus forests, farmlands, and even outer city suburbs. Devils are not territorial, but will wander over a range of 10-20 hectares in search of food.
Tasmanian Devils are nocturnal, spending the daytime sleeping in dens made in hollow logs, caves or old wombat burrows which they line with grass and leaves.
Mating takes place between February and September and about 18 days later, up to 30 joeys are born. Each is slightly larger than a grain of rice, and only between two and four are able to survive. They are carried in the pouch for about 15 weeks, after which they are left in the nest while the mother is away feeding. Later, they ride on the mother's back, or follow behind. They become independent after about 28 weeks, and may live for up to 8 years.

DEVIL
The Tasmanian Devil is the largest carnivorous (eats meat) marsupial (a mammal that has its babies in a pouch) in Australia. Tasmanian Devils are a nocturnal (active at night) animal. lives alone and prefers its own company hence it is a relatively shy animal
DESCRIPTION
The Tasmanian Devil is usually black with a white "collar" or patch around its neck. It is the size of a small terrier dog very solid and "stout" and weighs in between 6 and 8 kgs It has a tail of between 9 to 12" long. Tasmanian Devils have an extremely
large powerful head with a wide jaw with sharp teeth pointy pink ears (that turn red when angry due to increased blood flow) and piercing dark eyes
Its dark colouring helps it to move around unseen at night time (feeding time)
The Tasmanian Devil is now only found on the island state of Tasmania and lives in coastal scrub and eucalypt forests. It is a scavenger so Tasmanian Devils are also found near human settlements
They spend the daytime out of sight sleeping in dens lined with grass and leaves made in hollow logs, or old wombat burrows or small natural caves They can conserve energy by going into a state of "Tupor" where its body heat drops to match its surroundings
See my Pygmy Possum page for more about Torpor

FIGHTING Tasmanian Devils by nature are not aggressive until it comes to food. Then they are protective of its find and / or kill even to the extent of killing another Devil that wanted its catch. These fights result in many a Tasmanian Devil having bald patches of missing fur and appearing battle-scarred.

The fur is black, although white markings often occur on the rump and chest. The body size can vary, dependent on the diet and habitat, with adult males weighing up to 12 kg and standing 30 cm high at the shoulder. Adult males are usually larger than the adult females. They live on average for up to 5 years. In captivity they can live a few more years. Devils are most closely related to quolls, with their next closest relationship being smaller marsupials and then a more distant relationship with thylacines. WHERE TO SEE THEM : the Devils were once found on the mainland of Australia, as indicated through fossil remains, having become extinct on the mainland several thousand years ago. Tasmanian Devil (By David McCormick In Bugs Bunny cartoons, the Tasmanian Devil was a savage, ill-tempered beast that walked on two legs. In reality, the animal, which is a marsupial, isn't much of a hunter at all. Tasmanian devils are mainly scavengers that feed on dead wallabies and sheep. They also eat the larvae of some beetles and have been known to attack poultry. The coat is black and brown, and there is a whitish breast mark. They also have large jaws and strong teeth. Named for their devilish expression and husky snarl, Tasmanian devils grow to between 50 and 80 centimetres long. They have a 23 to 30 centimetre long bushy tail. Female Tasmanian devils give birth to three or four young, which remain in the pouch for about five months. They were once common all throughout Australia but because farmers believed it killed their livestock and poultry, Tasmanian Devils were exterminated there. Now, they only live on the island of Tasmania in remote rocky areas.

Tasmanian devils: why they're in trouble
22 April 2004
Tasmanian devils are the world's largest surviving carnivorous marsupial. Devils once occurred on mainland Australia but now they're only found in Tasmania. And it's in the island state that wildlife experts have been drawn into the fight to save these creatures from a mysterious facial tumour disease which is wiping out entire populations. ACA reports. Wildlife biologist Nick Mooney, who is an actually an expert in birds of prey, says despite Tasmanian devils' reputation as being bad-tempered, they're actually really personable animals and he's now joined the push to rescue these thick-set creatures. "I'm very experienced with wildlife; I've seen diseases and deformities in all sorts of wildlife over the years and I've seen nothing like this," he says. The disease is a cancer most likely caused by a virus spread by biting around the face and neck. Once symptoms are obvious, tumours spread throughout the body, taking several months to kill the creature.

Tasmanian Devils Be warned, there are devils living in Tasmania, an island southeast of Australia!
Well, devils in Tasmania are not interested in stealing our souls. Nevertheless, their forceful look, screeching screams, and bad temper are so unpleasant that the European settlers who first discovered these solitary, nocturnal animals decided to call them "devils."
Tasmanian devils wear black fur coats. Sometimes, they have white patches around their chests and rumps. Tasmanian devils are stocky. Measuring 30-44 inches long (including their tails of 9-12 inches) and weighing 9-26 pounds, Tasmanian devils are the largest carnivorous (meat-eating) marsupials. Marsupials are unusual mammals. A female marsupial gives birth to her baby at a very early stage. She carries it inside her pouch where the baby grows and completes its development. Aside from Tasmanian devils, kangaroos, koalas, and wombats are also marsupials.
Tasmanian devils usually prefer to feed on dead animals or carrion, even though they themselves are capable of making their own kills. Thanks to their powerful jaws and sharp teeth, Tasmanian devils experience no difficulty in crushing bones or tearing apart fur and flesh. Hence, they devour their prey completely and leave nothing behind! When examining a Tasmanian devil's stomach, we may come across carcasses of a wide range of animals, such as wallabies, sheep, cattle, snakes, lizards, and birds.
