Awhile back I mentioned that I thought that it odd that nobody eats tarantulas because of their close relationship to crabs and the likefavorite foods in many cuisines. Last night I was watching a show on a tribe of Amazonian Indians and lo and behold, they were trapping and cooking the big ol' spiders. And I do mean big. These guys were the size of blue crabs. I would guess that they're at least eight inches across the spread legs.
"Take one tarantula..." Not an easy process! First they catch the critters by luring them out of their tunnels with a long strip of grass. The hunter then very deftly grabs the spider by the thorax, folds the legs back and wraps the spider in a leaf for transportation to the camp site.
At the campsite, the spiders are killed. Everything is used. The abdomens are removed and stripped of eggs. The eggs are wrapped in a leaf and roasted over a fire to produce a spider egg omelette. The bodies are tossed directly onto a fire to singe off the hair and to cook the meat. When they're done, the legs and thorax are cracked open and picked just like when you eat a crab. After the meal the fangswhich are a good inch and a half long are used as toothpicks. It was emphasized that the spiders taste *very* much like crab.

Urban Integrated Pest Management
Tarantulas
From: R.L. Smith, 1982. Venomous Animals of Arizona. The University of Arizona. Description: The term tarantula is a general one that refers to spiders belonging to the family Theraphosidae. These are the largest spiders in Arizona (and the world, for that matter). We have as many as 30 species in two genera ( Aphonopelma and Dugesiella —"hairy spiders."
Figure 9. A tarantula, Aphonopelma sp. Body length 65 mm. Biology: Tarantulas of the American Southwest spend most of their lives on or in the ground. They dig burrows when they are spiderlings and live in them for many years, enlarging them as necessary. Once established at a site, an individual tarantula usually spends its life there, hunting in an area only a few meters adjacent to its burrow. These spiders prefer open areas and avoid conditions of dense vegetation. Tarantula burrows are usually plugged with a loose webbing of silk when the spider returns after a night's foraging. During the winter when the spider is inactive, its burrow is usually plugged with silk, plant debris, and soil. Courtship involves cautious approach by the male, who touches the female with his front legs, then moves in a way that identifies both his gender and species. If the female is receptive to his tentative advances, she abandons her burrow and ultimately postures with her cephalothorax raised. She remains inactive while the male approaches her from the front. He uses special hooks (Figure 10) on the first pair of his walking legs to hold the female's fang-bearing chelicerae during insemination. After the sperm have been deposited in the female's abdominal genital opening, the male disengages his hooks and departs briskly.

Huge spider webs, and it smelled like sewer down there. MONICA: When we were going into the stunt you could tell that it was gonna be something nasty because you're down there, it's dark, it stinks down there, there's spiders, cockroaches, and cobwebs everywhere. JACKSON: I was more nervous on that stunt than any other stunt on the entire show that we've had. Because the gross stuff, it affects me pretty bad. I was real nervous goin' into that stunt. My stomach just wouldn't stop makin' noises. FEAR FACTOR: Did the idea of being locked up with 500 tarantulas scare you?

First off, these are beneficial, even desirable neighbors who can live 20 years or more and should be encouraged, not killed. These big predators kill a lot of insects, pests, lizards and even small rodents if they come upon them.
