Creature Features: Tarantulas
Caption and Photo Credit The Desert Tarantula is the largest spider in our area. It can sometimes measure up to 3 inches in body length. Male and female tarantulas look alike when they are young but when they mature into adults the female develops a larger abdomen while the male tends to be darker in color than the female. Tarantulas are found over much of the southwestern United States, in Central American and down into South America. There are about 30 species of tarantula which live in Arizona. The tarantula is a hunting spider. It feeds on insects, primarily beetles and grasshoppers and other small creatures including young rodents. Its large fangs are used to inject venom (poison) into its prey. The tarantula is not only predator but also prey itself. The tarantula is prey to the Pepsis wasp, coatis, skunks, coyotes and many other desert omnivores. As a means of defending itself against these predators, the tarantula kicks the barbed hairs from the back of its abdomen into the face of the potential predator. These barbed hairs cause much irritation to the attacker who is distracted allowing the tarantula to make its escape. The fangs are seldom used on humans and do not cause any serious complications. Tarantulas are usually very easy going animals and are not easily provoked (pushed) to bite. The tarantula lives much longer than other spiders. It takes 8 to 10 years for a tarantula to mature. The female spends most of her time underground and rarely wanders. She lays her eggs in her burrow and may lay 200-300 eggs at one time. She may live as long as 25 years. The male is the more commonly seen. He wanders about at night and during the cool time of the day, particularly in late summer and fall when seeking a mate. The male lives only one season past sexual maturity.

T arantulas are found worldwide; there are over eight hundred different species of them! These big, hairy spiders eat insects, small birds and reptiles, and also other spiders. T hese spiders are found in tropical and sub-tropical areas, like South America, Central America and the south-western states of the USA, Africa, parts of the Middle East, southern Asia (including India and Sri Lanka), much of Polynesia, Australia, northern parts of New Zealand and much of the Caribbean.
T arantulas are solitary, and do not easily tolerate others of the same species. Because of their large size, they don't construct intricate "catching webs" like most spiders do. They can spin webs, however, which they use to line their burrows. The male of the species is only sexually mature for the last few months of his life. Males generally live 9-10 years, but females live as long as twenty years. The female lays eggs in a sack woven from web silk, which is carried attached to the abdomen until the eggs hatch. The sack may contain 300-1000 eggs, which hatch in sixty to ninety days. A hatchling tarantula is about the size of a pencil point.
T arantulas overpower their prey with sheer force, and inject it with venom. The venom is a combination of a paralyzing agent and digestive secretions. They will generally only eat live food, although some will accept dead prey and some big spiders will apparently eat small pieces of raw meat. After catching and killing their prey, tarantulas inject it with powerful digestive enzymes that liquefy the insect's contents. When the insides have been sufficiently liquefied, the tarantula sucks the insect dry and throws away the empty husk.

A Desert Park Visiting Activities Nature ... Education Autumn provides a brief glimpse into the workings of nature in the desert. At no other time is the intimate connection between life and death represented so clearly. NATURE Animals Amphibians Arthropods Tarantulas Birds Mammals Reptiles Plants ... Environmental Factors To alert the female of his presence, the male taps one of his legs against the ground until the female emerges. The male must then participate in a dangerous mating dance, wherein he fends off the female, who wishes to devour him, by using hooks on his front legs. His death will give the female a needed boost of nutrition, as she must now produce 500 to 1,000 eggs and a silk cocoon where the eggs will be protected. Even if the male escapes being eaten by the female, he will still die within a few months. Females, on the other hand, often produce eggs for 25 years or more. If you encounter a tarantula, take time to observe its body, its behavior, and its connection to the fabric of desert life, but please do not disturb this delicate connection. Wildlife should never be touched, chased, or fed, and the tarantula is no exception. Contrary to appearance and reputation, the tarantula is a timid creature and will not bite human beings unless seriously provoked. Like all animals in Joshua Tree National Park, the desert tarantula deserves our respect, not just for surviving, but for thriving in a place where the boundary between life and death is always shifting.

Wildlife of Mount Diablo State Park Tarantulas Usher in the Fall Season
by Ken Lavin Late summer and fall is tarantula time on Mt. Diablo. During this turn of the season, park visitors often see these hairy arachnids scurrying across trails and roads.
The tarantula, North America's largest spider, spends most of its life in and around its underground burrow. However, when a male tarantula reaches maturity at about seven years of age, he leaves the safety of his subterranean home to risk life and limb (all eight of them) in search of females of the species. These love struck males are the autumnal wanderers we see on the mountain.
Drawing by Nathan Crawford Once a female tarantula is located by scent and enticed out of her den, the male tarantula faces the classic problem common to male spiders. He must convince the female he is a suitor and not just lunch on the hoof . Toward this end, male tarantulas have small spurs or hooks on their front legs to hold the female's savage jaws at bay during mating. After mating, the larger, longer lived female returns to her borrow, ultimately to hatch hundreds of baby spiders the following spring.

They are exotic, quiet and make a great topic of conversation. Not surprisingly, tarantulas, popularly known as ‘tiger spiders’ are being increasingly sought out by celebs in the West as ‘dangerous pets’. Now, the twist in the tale:  various species of Indian tarantulas are being smuggled out of the country in large numbers to feed the fad abroad. ‘‘The Poecilotheria striata,  known as the tiger spider, is being smuggled to the West to be kept as a pet. This is an extremely rare species on the verge of extinction,’’ informs Jaideep Mathur, a research scholar with the Arachnology Institute.

http://cecalaveras.ucdavis.edu/tara.htm
Tarantulas During the Fall of each year we tend to have an increase in calls regarding tarantulas. This is largely due to the fact that many can be seen in the evenings crawling out onto warm blacktop roads in the evening to savor the residual warmth. Occasionally, these very large, hairy spiders are found within a dwelling causing alarm and panic among those fearing spiders. Actually, most tarantulas are docile, non-aggressive and rarely bite. Bites are not considered dangerous and cause little lasting pain. Bites are no more painful than a bee sting, and its symptoms should be treated similarly. Some have a dense covering of special hairs on the abdomen, which, when dislodged, cause skin irritation. This is mechanical rather than chemical in nature. The name tarantula has unfortunately become associated with several spider families, but most often is applied to the ones called the hairy mygalmorphs. Tarantulas have been much publicized in horror shows in movie houses and television shows due to their forbidding hairy appearance. Identification The largest tarantulas are tropical with a body length of 3-1/2 inches and leg span of 9-1/2 inches. The largest United States' species has a body length of two inches and leg span of about six inches. These spiders are stout-bodied and covered with hollow, needlelike, barbed hairs, especially on the abdomen. When disturbed, the hind legs are used to scrape off and throw very fine (fiberglass-like) abdominal hairs in the direction of danger, resulting in a remaining bald spot. A bald spot may also occur on the abdomen prior to the shedding of the skin. Hairs may cause a skin rash, allergic reaction and possibly anaphylactic shock to certain individuals.

  • Treating Tarantula Bites
    Home Treatment:
Place ice (wrapped in a washcloth or other suitable covering) on the site of the sting for 10 minutes and then off for 10 minutes. Repeat this process. If patient has circulatory problems, decrease the time to prevent possible damage to the skin.
