Tarantulas I rear tarantulas to provide a travelling show for elementary school classes. I keep both arboreal and burrowing tarantulas. Arboreal tarantulas generally live above the ground, often in trees. They spin a retreat of dense, white silk, in which they spend most of their time. Burrowing tarantulas live below ground, in a tunnel-like system that they build by excavating dirt with their legs and mouthparts. Family: Theraphosidae (baboon spiders)
(Phylum: Arthropoda , subphylum Chelicerata, class Arachnida, order Araneae, suborder Mygalomorpha) Harpactira baviana (male) Harpactira chrysogaster (female) Harpactira atra (male) Ceratogyrus sp.(photo by Dr. M Filmer, used with permission) (for larger images click on the image) African species are called baboon spiders due to their hairy appearance and the black scopulae pads on its "feet" resembling the pads on baboon feet. These spiders are often incorrectly referred to as Tarantulas , a name usurped by the American species from the European wolf spider (family Lycosidae Lycosa tarantula This family belongs to the suborder Mygalomorpha. This is a primitive spider group that some scientists believe should belong to its own order as, for example, the scorpions. These harmless giants are often negatively portrayed as villainous monsters especially in movie industry. They are not dangerous to man although they can inflict a painful bite. They are all mildly venemous, the venom being neurotoxic. However, the smaller species from the Western Cape, Harpactirella lightfooti is reputed to be dangerous to man although there is no evidence of this.

Abstract This lab is set up to research and observe two different tarantula species (Pink Salmon Brazilian Birdeater- Lasiodora parahybana and California Ebony- Aphonopelma eutylnum ) and their reaction to the environment around them in varying climates. They will be tested in three different climates: one above average, one below average, and one at room temperature (the control). Their weight, span, food intake, and behavior will be closely observed by the four lab members, as well as the rest of the class, for the duration of the semester. The observations will take place once a day, twice a week, for the next four weeks. I. Introduction

Mygalomorphae
A tarantula by any other name ... What we call tarantulas should properly be called mygalomorphs. The true tarantulas are smaller (but still hairy) spiders that belong to the genus Lycosa and the family of wolf spiders, found in Europe.
How are mygalomorphs different from other spiders?
Big hairy deal:
Mygalomorphs are generally larger than most spiders and have hairy legs and bodies. In fact, some large hairy spiders have been wrongly called tarantulas. Mygalomorphs have rather poor eyesight and depend on these hairs to detect prey and avoid predators, by air currents and ground movements.
VITAL STATISTICS
Size:
The biggest is the Giant Tarantula ( Theraphosa leblondi ) from South America: 30cm from toe to toe.
Lifespan: Females: 20-30 years. Males: 5-7 years, usually die after mating.
Metamorphosis: Incomplete, no pupal stage. Hatchlings look like miniature adultes. Females mature in 3-10 years.
