Tarantulas are large hairy spiders that live in warm areas around the world, including South America, southern North America, southern Europe, Africa, southern Asia, and Australia. The greatest concentration of tarantulas is in South America. There are about 300 species of tarantulas. The biggest tarantula is Pseudotherathosa apophysis , which had a leg span of about 13 inches (33 cm). These arachnids have a very long life span; some species can live over 30 years. Habitat : Some tarantulas live in underground burrows; some live on the ground, and others live in trees. They live in rain forests deserts , and other habitats. Diet : Tarantulas are carnivores (meat-eaters). They eat insects (like grasshoppers and beetles), other arachnids , small reptiles (like lizards and snakes), amphibians (like frogs ), and some even eat small birds. Tarantulas kill their prey using venomous fangs; they also inject a chemical into the prey that dissolves the flesh. Tarantulas can crush their prey using powerful mouthparts. No person has ever died of a tarantula bite.

Welcome to
(Updated 7th June 2004)
This web site gives an all-round guide to the housing, feeding and general care of the worlds largest spiders - the theraphosids or tarantulas.
Although focusing mainly on tarantulas, this site also offers an insight into the araneomorphs or 'true spiders' such as the wandering, huntsman, orb-web and wolf spiders.
There is no doubt that the fascination for tarantulas is growing worldwide and as a result, they are becoming more and more popular as pets. Gone are the days when people were inexperienced in their care and as time goes by, more facts are being discovered - all helping to dispel the popular myth of tarantulas being "deadly killers!"
The information contained on this site comes from over fifteen years of personal experience with tarantulas and I hope the facts about their care and the problems that can occur (although avoidable) proves beneficial to those who own, or are thinking of owning, one of these large and beautiful spiders.

Awhile back I mentioned that I thought that it odd that nobody eats tarantulas because of their close relationship to crabs and the likefavorite foods in many cuisines. Last night I was watching a show on a tribe of Amazonian Indians and lo and behold, they were trapping and cooking the big ol' spiders. And I do mean big. These guys were the size of blue crabs. I would guess that they're at least eight inches across the spread legs.
"Take one tarantula..." Not an easy process! First they catch the critters by luring them out of their tunnels with a long strip of grass. The hunter then very deftly grabs the spider by the thorax, folds the legs back and wraps the spider in a leaf for transportation to the camp site.
At the campsite, the spiders are killed. Everything is used. The abdomens are removed and stripped of eggs. The eggs are wrapped in a leaf and roasted over a fire to produce a spider egg omelette. The bodies are tossed directly onto a fire to singe off the hair and to cook the meat. When they're done, the legs and thorax are cracked open and picked just like when you eat a crab. After the meal the fangswhich are a good inch and a half long are used as toothpicks. It was emphasized that the spiders taste *very* much like crab.

Cold Hard Interview - Ian Corlett/Alec Willows (BotCon 2000) BotCon 2000. A convention that forged friendships and firmed my beliefs that the people who are involved with Transformers are a great group of people. Heathe was the only one of us able to go, so the rest of us are still insanely jealous of him. He met up with Gordy, the webmaster of Wheezebucket , and together they got some awesome footage as well as an interview with Ian Corlett (the voice of Cheetor), and Alec Willows (the voice of Tarantulas). Finally, the interview has been digitized. It is nearly 30 minutes long, and the video isn't that great, but we really had to think about the size of the video versus quality.
To Download:
PLEASE use a download manager such as GetRight or GoZilla , both of which can be found on Download.com . The file size is approx. 35 Megabytes , so people on a slower connection may want to wait just a bit. Wheezebucket is hosting the audio portion of this interview, so if you just want the audio, go get it.

William F. Lyon Over the past few years, tarantulas have become acceptable pets now widely sold, traded and kept in houses, apartments, schools and dormitories. Occasionally, these very large, hairy spiders escape within a dwelling causing alarm and panic among those fearing spiders. Actually, most tarantulas are docile, non-aggressive and rarely bite. Bites are not considered dangerous and cause little lasting pain. Bites are no more painful than a bee sting, and its symptoms should be treated similarly. Some have a dense covering of special hairs on the abdomen, which, when dislodged, cause skin irritation. This is mechanical rather than chemical in nature. The name tarantula has unfortunately become associated with several spider families, but most often is applied to the ones called the hairy mygalmorphs. Tarantulas have been much publicized in horror shows in movie houses and television shows due to their forbidding hairy appearance.
Identification
The largest tarantulas are tropical with a body length of 3-1/2 inches and leg span of 9-1/2 inches. The largest United States' species has a body length of two inches and leg span of about six inches. These spiders are stout-bodied and covered with hollow, needlelike, barbed hairs, especially on the abdomen. When disturbed, the hind legs are used to scrape off and throw very fine (fiberglass-like) abdominal hairs in the direction of danger, resulting in a remaining bald spot. A bald spot may also occur on the abdomen prior to the shedding of the skin. Hairs may cause a skin rash, allergic reaction and possibly anaphylactic shock to certain individuals.

Tarantulas
I have been keeping tarantulas since 1994, currently my collection is around 15 spiders. At one time I had 25, all of different species. Tarantulas make great pets as long as you have the right attitude. They are not active, or interactive. Tarantulas are best viewed like tropical fish, interesting to watch but not to touch. Most people have an adverse reaction when they hear you keep tarantulas. Some common misconceptions are that all tarantulas are mean and go out of their way to attack you, and that their venom is deadly. In reality most tarantulas (except for a few select species) will do anything to avoid people and only bite as a last resort. The majority of tarantulas have venom similar to a bee sting, causing minor swelling and discomfort. The major danger from a tarantula bite is an allergic or anaphalactic reaction to the venom, which can occur. Species Kept

39. Tarantula Caresheet
tarantulas. Before life. Many tarantulas die in the first few days because their new owner hasn t prepared a suitable home for them.
http://www.ex.ac.uk/bugclub/tarant.html
TARANTULAS Before you buy a tarantula you should think about the conditions it will need to live a long and healthy life. Many tarantulas die in the first few days because their new owner hasn't prepared a suitable home for them. First decide what you want to buy because a small spiderling will obviously require very different accommodation to a large grown specimen. I will assume you are buying a medium-sized tarantula in which case you will need to provide the following. HOUSING Pet shops will sell suitable tanks in glass or plastic and the size should not be less than about 25cm by 15cm by 15cm high. If you want to create a tank that tries to provide the spiders natural conditions (for example rain forest with leaf litter, logs etc.) then you will need a much larger tank, but you won't see your spider very often! I would suggest that you begin with the simple tank without unnecessary contents so that you can watch your tarantula's activities. SUBSTRATE (Ground cover) A 2cm layer of Vermiculite should cover the bottom of the tank and a thin layer of chipped bark or cocoa fibre placed on top of that. These can be purchased from most garden centres and should be kept damp to keep up the humidity levels in the tank. Peat or potting compost should not be used as they really need to be sterilised and changed frequently.
