History Production zones Production systems Seed ... Contributors History Potatoes were introduced to the Southern Highlands of Tanzania by Germans in the 1920's (Macha et al., 1982). Local farmers received seed from religious mission stations and began cultivation in small scale gardens. Other variety introductions likely came from Kenya and Malawi as farmers designate older local varieties by the names of these countries (Mallya and Jackobsen, 1976). After the First World War, Great Britain assumed control of the region, formerly known as German East Africa. In 1928, 84 tons of potatoes were exported to Shamboa district. The potato made it possible for farmers to move their cultivation to higher altitudes. Detailed information on the subsequent development of potato production until the 1960's in Tanzania is unavailable. back to top Production zones Potatoes are generally grown in areas between 1800 and 2700 masl, the most important area being the Southern Highlands, particularly the Iringa and Mbeya regions (Macha et al., 1982). Estimates for 1980 show these regions accounting for approximately 90% of total production or 550,000 tons out of a total national production of less than 600,000 tons (Macha et al., 1982). Representative growing areas are found in Njombe and Makete districts of the Iringa Region (Uyole Agricultural Center, 1980). These districts lie at 2000-2500 masl. Topographically, they include the Ubena Plateau, an undulating plain in the eastern and central portions of the region, and Ukinga highlands in the west which is characterized by steep mountains and narrow valleys with a few high plateaus.

    Tanzania: Restiveness in Zanzibar
    By Jim Lobe
    OVzanzibar.pdf
    History
In 1992, under mounting internal and external pressure, Tanzania moved to become a multiparty democracy. In 1995, in the first national multiparty elections, the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party won easily on the mainland. In Zanzibar, however, it faced a strong challenge by the opposition Civic United Front (CUF) whose members tend to identify themselves as Shirazis, a reference to the island's historic association with Oman. When the CCM presidential candidate was declared the winner, the CUF denounced the elections as rigged, and international observers concurred. CUF, which won seats in parliament, refused to participate in the new government and most countries and the IFIs suspended their foreign aid to the island. Tensions rose steadily over the next five years amid charges of CCM harassment of CUF activists, including the imprisonment of many of its leaders. In June 1999 CCM and CUF signed a Commonwealth-brokered agreement. Under the accord, CUF agreed to rejoin the Zanzibar government and CCM was required to institute a series of reforms to ensure fair and transparent elections. However, in the run-up to the October 2000 elections, abuses by the police against CUF members rose sharply, according to Amnesty International.

    Transformations Along the Gradient
Summary of dissertation of Christopher Conte,
Michigan State University, written under Prof. Harold Marcus,
    May 1995
This study presents a history of ecological change in northeastern Tanzania's Usambara mountains during the late pre-colonial, colonial and early independence periods. My thesis considers long-term changes in the interrelationships among the region's local agrarian communities, the regional environment, and the exogenous forces of the world economy and the colonial state. It explains under what circumstances indigenous communities alter land management practices and social relations in the face of changing market forces, environmental uncertainty, and political transformation. Moreover, by carefully collating data collected from interviews with African informants with those of the European documentary sources, this analysis demonstrates how Usambara's inhabitants' changing relationship with nature led to ecological stress. A growing body of historical literature addresses the relationship between East African societies and the environment. Recently published case studies tend to view rural East African households and communities as part and parcel of local and regional socioeconomic networks designed to mitigate the effects of ecological crises spawned by drought and disease(1). By incorporating oral evidence, these studies represent a revisionist trend in rural history and attempt to broaden the analyses of more general works which rely exclusively on written sources(2).

BACKGROUND ON CHICHEWA AND RELATED LANGUAGES
Chichewa is a language of the Bantu language family, spoken in parts of East, Central, and Southern Africa. It is spoken in Malawi where, from 1968 until recently, it has served as the national language. It is also spoken in Mozambique, especially in the provinces of Tete and Niassa, in Zambia (especially in the Eastern Province), as well as in Zimbabwe where, according to some estimates, it ranks as the third most widely used local language, after Shona and Ndebele. The countries of Malawi, Zambia, and Mozambique constitute the central location of Chichewa. Because of the national language policy adopted by the Malawi government, which promoted Chichewa through active educational programs, media usage and, other research activities carried out under the auspices of the Chichewa Board, out of a population of around 9 million, upwards of 65% have functional literacy or active command of this language. In Mozambique , the language goes by the name of Chinyanja, and it is native to 3.3% of a population numbering approximately 11.5 million . In Tete province it is spoken by 41.7% of a population of 777,426 and, it is the first language of 7.2% of the population of Niassa province, whose population totals 506,974 (see Firmino, 1995).
