Links between the Departments of Geography at the University of Dar es Salaam and the University of Glasgow There has been a long-established link between the geography departments of the two universities, dating back to 1982, and building on John Briggs ’ links with University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) which started with his appointment to a lectureship there in 1976. Between 1985 and 1993, the link was formally supported and funded by the British Council and ODA, and during that time, 11 different UDSM Geography Department staff spent periods of time in Glasgow on short research visits or longer training visits. Not only did three UDSM staff complete Glasgow PhD qualifications during this period, but another three technical (cartographic) staff spent extended periods of up to one year in Glasgow gaining practical lab experience and formal HND qualifications in cartography. In the opposite direction, seven Glasgow staff spent extended periods of up to 3 months at UDSM. In addition, two Glasgow postgraduates and seven undergraduates also visited UDSM for further study and fieldwork. Since 1993, the collaboration has continued with joint research on peri-urban agriculture and development around Dar es Salaam being conducted and subsequently published; with the establishment of a

Here, the trough has been filled by water to create Lake Tanganyika, the world's second deepest lake, down to 1400 meters deep. Formed about 20 million years ago, it is the oldest of the Rift Valley lakes. Awesome Africa Lake Manyara National Park Arusha National Park Serengeti National Park Kilimanjaro National Park ... Tarangire National Park GORP Forum: Africa The lake is fed by drainage from Zaire, Burundi and Zambia as well as from Tanzania. The largest of these rivers is the Malagarasi which drains all of north-western Tanzania into the lake about 40 kms south of Kigoma. The lake has an outlet at Kalemie in Zaire, only 100 kms across the lake from the inlet, and this is the source of the Lualaba River. It is likely that before the Rift Valley was formed, the Malagarasi and Lualaba were one continuous river flowing westward to the Atlantic. advertisement DisplayAds ("Top,Right,TopRight,Right1,Frame1,Middle!Middle", "250", "250");

    Lecturer at St. Hugh's College , Oxford.
    Contact Info: Email dan.brockington@geog.ox.ac.uk Dan Brockington is a Departmental Lecturer. He joined the department in October 2002. Previously he held a British Academy Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship at the Department of Geography in the University of Cambridge. He studied for his PhD in the Anthropology Department of University College London.
    Research Interests
    Dan has examined the environmental and social consequences of nature conservation and resource use in Africa and has completed two major research projects in Tanzania exploring these issues. He is particularly interested in the power of international conservation agendas, national government policy and local attempts to subvert and resist the consequences of both. He has also explored the dynamics of institutions of common pool resource management, which led to a study of local government structures and practises in Tanzania. Current work examines the nature and politics of third world environmentalisms, human agency in environmental change and ways of responding to environmental change. His interest in environments is based on the problems of inequality. He is concerned with how inequality is justified, how perpetrated, resisted, defied and how people cope with it.
    He enjoys walking, gardening, tandem rides and as much ultimate frisbee as possible.

    Conditions in Poor Countries
    Cutting across other research areas within the department are studies of conditions and developments in poor countries. An increasing number of researchers have incorporated such aspects of research, while a few themes dominate and are held together by common theoretical and methodological frameworks, by networks, seminar activities, and the active development of relevant special courses and course elements to prepare for this research. They include the following themes:
    Rural African Research includes studies on systems of agricultural production as well as on processes of environmental change and on modes of food provisioning in rural areas.
    A major ongoing programme here is one on "Islands of Agricultural Intensification", coordinated by Professor Mats Widgren. It also involves Wille Östberg and a doctoral project by Lowe Börjeson. The project addresses intensive agriculture in East Africa, a comparatively rare phenomenon in the region, but of decisive importance to its future. In two case studies – in Tanzania and Kenya – the history, ecology and social context of intensive farming is studied. Local knowledge related to irrigation, manuring, terracing, stall-feeding and other sustainable farming practices are studied from anthropological and geographical perspectives.
