Cross-Cultural Program:
East Africa Semester
EAST AFRICA: TANZANIA
The East African country of Tanzania will be the primary location for the semester. This country's history of non-violence is particularly noteworthy given the fact that there are two primary religious groups, Christian and Muslim, and approximately 120 different ethnic groups. Swahili is the primary language spoken. The semester will be divided between Dar Es Salaam, the capital of Tanzania, and the Shirati area, where there is a concentration of Tanzanian Mennonite Churches. In both of these areas students will live with host families. In Dar Es Salaam students will study the history, language and culture, doing research on contemporary issues. The University of Dar Es Salaam will be easily accessible and available for students' research. Day and weekend trips will provide additional learning experiences including a possible weekend trip to the island of Zanzibar. Zanzibar, primarily Muslim and culturally diverse from Tanzania, would provide an experience with Islamic and Arabic architecture and culture, and an opportunity to learn about the slave trade which took place in the mid-1800's. A variety of learning experiences including geological, archeological, and natural resources could be explored and experienced such as: Mount Kilmanjaro, Lake Victoria, Oldwai Gorge where scientists have discovered the oldest traces of human life, Ngorongoro Crater with a large volcanic basin and a rain forest with an unusual variety of birds and wildlife and a big game area.

Exploring Zanzibar by Foot, Motorbike or Jeep Thumbnail description: Host Hisdory Jumane seems to be about the most friendly, flexible fellow in the world and he is offering to customize your experience on Zanzibar and show you things that only a local person can. If you want "deep cultural immersion" and maybe save some money, he can show you the sights by foot. If you want the full treatment he'll hire a jeep for you. But he seems to prefer the motorbike way, where you can see more and cool off between visits, too. Apparently a big attraction for Hisdory's tours is that if you want to you get to eat his mum's cooking! Thumbnail description: This week-long visit focuses on world-class snorkelling in what J.E.N. Veron, Chief Scientist of the Australian Institute of Marine Sciences, has called "one of the most spectacular coral gardens found anywhere on the world." Time is also set aside to explore a network of nature trails through the island's exotic "virgin coral rag forest," where trees arise from naked fossilised coral. You will study the island's intertidal zone, visit historical monuments, and be offered some very interesting optional day-tours, such as a visit to "The Endemic Red Colobus Monkeys in Jozani Forest," and "The Spice Gardens of Zanzibar." The lodging here constitutes an important part of the experience. You will stay in an "eco-bungalow" designed for extremely low impact in this official nature reserve. Your host will be native Tanzanian

on Sukuma Culture and Tanzania anonymously contributed on September 22, 1997. Congratulations on getting the Sukuma people and culture better known. As you mention, "the Sukuma culture is the largest in Tanzania." Yet here is some research I have done on "Books on Eastern African Ethnic Groups in the Library of Congress Database." While visiting the Library of Congress East African Office in Nairobi, Kenya in December, 1996, I checked the database for the Washington D.C. "holdings," that is, the numbers of books on East African Ethnic Groups in the Main Library of Congress Complex in Washington D.C. The results are as follows. Maasai Ethnic Group: 158 books Kikuyu " " 134 " Luo " " 96 " Galla " " 76 " Kamba " " 70 " Kuria " " 44 Oromo " " 42 " Sukuma " " 22 " Chagga " " 9 " What is striking is that the Maasai population is 883,000 compared to the Sukuma population of 5,000,000. See Ethnologue: Languages of the World, 13th Edition, 1966. Let us continue to help books, web sites, etc. on the Sukuma get better known. Contributed by Rev. Joseph G. Healey, M.M. (

Cultural visits in Kenya and Tanzania
Where? All parts of Kenya and Tanzania Best time: Any time Kenya and Tanzania offer an unrivalled opportunity to meet some of Africa's various cultures. East Africa offers every type of terrain, including deserts, semi-deserts, forests, mountains, lakes, open plains and tropical coasts. This incredible variety has allowed a huge diversity of wildlife to flourish, making the area famous for its animal safaris. This diversity has also helped tribal cultures flourish, from the coastal Swahili people who are a mixture of Arabic, Bantu and Indonesian, to the Nilotic tribes, the most famous of whom are the Masai, and the full Bantu tribes such as the Kikuyu, Kamba and Abaluhya. Language was the main difference between these groups.

summary
Tanzania is home to over 120 different tribal groups. Though most stem from the extensive Bantu - South East Africa's main ethnic and linguistic group - on Zanzibar and Pemba , the strong historical Arab influence is very much visible in the faces around you. Asians and Europeans make up Tanzania's smaller minority ethnic groups - all creating an exciting and generally comfortable mix of peoples, cultures and traditions. Indigenous Tanzanian's have been relatively successful in preserving their cultural heritage, arguably despite the insistence of independent Tanzania's founding father, Julius Nyerere, on the widespread teaching of Kiswahili - Tanzania's official language
detail
Today there are still tribes who live as they always have - including the aboriginal Wa-Tindiga who occupy age-old underground shelters and who live off roots and whatever they can hunt. Click languages are still also spoken amongst the Kangeju and Ndorobo tribes. The Maasai , who for Westerners have long-symbolised all the romance and nobility of 'native Africa,' have also stubbornly retained many of their traditional practices and ways of life.
