Although a Tanzanian gorge recently yielded a few bits of our old mate, Homo erectus, little is known about the country's really early history. Recorded history begins around 1800, when the Masai warrior tribes were migrating from Kenya to Tanzania. While the country's coastal area had long witnessed maritime squabbles between Portuguese and Arabic traders, it wasn't until the middle of the 18th century that Arab traders and slaves dared venture into Masai territory in the country's wild interior. European explorers began arriving in earnest in the mid-19th century, the most famous being Stanley and Livingstone. The famous phrase 'Dr Livingstone, I presume', stems from the duo's meeting at Ujiji on Lake Tanganyika. As the 20th century loomed, Germany got busy colonising Tanganyika - as the mainland was then known - by building railways and going commerce crazy. If not for the pesky little tsetse fly, the area could have become one vast grazing paddock for the fatherland. But losing the war didn't help the German cause much either, and the League of Nations soon mandated the territory to the British. The Brits had already grabbed the offshore island of Zanzibar, which for centuries had been the domain of Arab traders. Nationalist organisations sprang up after WWII, but it wasn't until Julius Nyerere founded the Tanganyika African National Union (TANU) in 1954 that they became effective. Tanganyika won independence in 1961 with Nyerere as the country's first president. Zanzibar was stuck with its British stiff upper lip for another two years, after which the mainland forged a union comprising Zanzibar and the nearby island of Pemba. Thus Tanzania was born.

TANZANIA CULTURAL TOURISM SAFARIS With Mt. Kilimanjaro, the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater and Zanzibar, Tanzania is endowed with some of the worlds most amazing attractions. Visitors will no doubt want to experience these sights but it would be heartbreaking if they were to leave Tanzania without realising the other treasures awaiting discovery. With bountiful ways to experience the culture, interact with locals and enjoy the magnificent scenery in many places, tourists could easily spend a few more days, weeks or even months in Tanzania complimenting their mountain climb or safari, thus making their visit much more complete and rewarding. Foreigners now have the opportunity to choose from a variety of cultural tours organised by local people through the Cultural Tourism Programme.
In many areas, rural life is an attraction on its own. Carefully cultivated plots and lush tropical vegetation form a backdrop for simple traditional houses. Women in colourful dresses carry buckets of water and bunches of firewood back home. Villagers participate in development projects, from irrigation systems to primary schools. The people are willing to receive tourists and show them daily life, culture and scenery in their villages. They see tourism as an activity that can create employment and generate income, which can be used for improving their living conditions.

Music and cultural performances have always been an integral part of film and it is in recognition of this that local and international music has played a major role alongside other performing arts during the Festival of the Dhow Countries. All over the world music is a very popular medium for bringing people together and can act as a powerful means of communicating positive messages. Indeed, in terms of raising awareness of social issues of the day, musicians are more influential than politicians.
The music of Tanzania has been influenced both from within the African continent and also from outside via long-established trade routes.
The coastal areas were influenced by contact with Arabic and Indonesian cultures. It is thought, for instance, that box-resonating zithers and flat-bar xylophones could have been imported from Indonesia.
There is also a definite Islamic influence on styles of coastal singing and types of instrument, such as the Swahili udi, an unfretted plucked lute nearly identical to the Arabic 'ud. Taarab, which began as an entertainment genre among the elite, has become a prominent urban popular style, using 'udi, harmonium, accordion, and drums. More recently it has been electrified. The cultural intercourse between Tanzania and the Arab world was mutual, as evidenced by the exportation of the leiwah dance genre to Bahrain.

    summary
East Africa is home to a large number of tribes and a correspondingly diverse number of cultures. We have always been wary of arranging visits to indigenous African tribes as there is a risk of disappointment and not much spontaneity. What we prefer to do is to use operators who are working with the tribes on a full time basis. This means that, as you are likely to be some time in the company of your hosts, interactions can be spontaneous and therefore much more informative than they would be in an arranged "visit". These are, after all, people we are talking about.
    operators
We use a number of camps and operators, who have essentially leased land from tribes such as the Maasai, and now work closely with them, employing many of them as guides and staff to run their camps, and generating valuable revenue for villages. This trend is progressing well in many places to the ideal conclusion whereby it is the members of the tribes who own and run the camps or lead the safaris, so this provides the ideal forum for learning about local culture as well as game viewing. Tanzania : Culture, Economy and Sustainable Development
    May 16, 2004 - May 29, 2004
Tanzania, known for its natural wonders from Mt. Kilimanjaro to the Serengeti, is one of the most unique countries in Africa because of both its post-colonial socialist background and its relative stability and honest leadership in an unstable region. Because of this different path a strong sense of Tanzanian pride and nationalistic identity developed and still exists today. Still, the familiar problems associated with Africa are in full view here. AIDS, poverty, unemployment, debt, and the conflict of tradition versus the new lures of a changing world all come together to create a historic time in the development of this nation. This tour will give participants a chance to come face to face with these crucial issues to better understand them and see positive solutions in action. We will view the whole spectrum, the beautiful natural spectacle of the country, the customs and way of life of the traditional society of the Maasai, the conflicts of urban life, and the attempts to find and hold on to identity in a shifting world. The itinerary will be built around the focal areas of sustainable development, health care, and education with the over-arching theme of seeing the positive aspects of grassroots development in Tanzania. Join Global Exchange and our partnering organzation in Tanzania, TerraWatu on this alternative travel experience to explore the bridge, where positive work is being done to manage the conflict between indigenous and modern life and create sustainable development projects that are not pretending to become "Western", but are maintaining the Tanzanian way of life with improvements.

Postcard from Tanzania A Masai house in construction on the Serengeti Plain. Photo: Rob Busby Dear ArchitectureWeek, While traveling on the Serengeti Plain in Tanzania we visited a Masai village. The village is built in a circle with a large wall around it and several entrances. Every night the Masai bring all their cattle into the center of the village and close up the entrances to protect them from lions and other predators. The houses are built by the women of the tribe. They cut down trees that are found in groves scattered throughout the Serengeti. They shape their houses by weaving smaller branches between wood supports stuck into the ground. The women collect cow dung and use it as the surface material for the walls. This practice also serves to clean up the central area of the village. They use grasses and dung for the roof. The smell definitely takes some getting used to! The dwellings are built without a chimney for the kitchen fire. They must depend on the leaks in the walls for cross-ventilation. When a man gets married, his wife builds a home for them in his area of the village. When he marries again (he can have up to four wives), the next wife builds her home to the left of the first one. The next wife would then build her home to the right of the first one, and so forth.

    EAST AFRICA ADVENTURE
East Africa offers a potpourri from anthropology to zoology; pearls of geological wonders, renowned wildlife, tantalizing environmental diversity, motivated rural economic development, modern urban centers and specimens of the oldest known human fossils. This is the land so eloquently described in the writings of Karen Blixen ('Out Of Africa'), Beryl Markham ('West With The Night') and dozens of other writers. Splitting the highlands of East Africa is the 3000 mile long Great Rift Valley. The same powerful forces that split the earth set the stage for the diverse habitats that not only support the big game animals, but also nurture more species of birds than any similar sized area on earth. Equally fascinating are social forces in the region a long history of highly organized kingdoms, shifting indigenous populations, centuries of trade with seafaring Arabs and a far shorter but intense period of European colonialism. Bicycle across beautiful steppes and scenic plateaus, past lakes, lush green forests and hills, and countless traditional villages. Bicycling is restricted in the game parks (for good reason) so vans are used where necessary on the program. These
