Gifted and talented coordinators Excellence in Cities (EiC) expects that secondary schools will appoint a gifted and talented coordinator (preferably not the special educational needs coordinator). Some non-EiC schools have already established similar structures. A similar pattern is emerging in some colleges and sixth-form centres. Although in many cases the responsibility is carried by a senior manager. Whatever the arrangement, it is important that teachers know where to get advice on meeting the needs of gifted and talented learners. The gifted and talented coordinator will have some answers and will know where to go for more information. However, an effective system grows from shared expertise and focused discussions. Regular meetings between the gifted and talented coordinator, named representatives of departments or curriculum areas, and the assessment coordinator, are an effective way to ensure progress. Job descriptions for curriculum leaders (including the gifted and talented coordinator) and clear subject policies should specify an appropriate distribution of responsibilities for meeting the needs of gifted and talented learners. Roles and their relationship to curriculum and pastoral leadership should be explicitly set down and made known to all staff, parents and students. Top of page

Headteachers, principals and senior managers
If school or college policies are to be effective, headteachers and managers as well as subject and pastoral teachers must be committed to their success. In particular, their responsibilities must complement those of the gifted and talented coordinator and ideally include line-management of the person charged with coordination. They should take responsibility for ensuring that the policies: show commitment to, and support for, gifted and talented learners; provide a clear framework for subject policies or guidelines. Top of page
Points to consider
Headteachers, principals and senior managers need to consider the following types of questions. Commitment to policies Is provision for the gifted and talented a prominent feature of the institution's development plan and any institutional targets set? How regularly do curriculum managers and teaching staff refer to the policy for gifted and talented learners? Where there is a gifted and talented coordinator, how is he or she supported by managers? How are the gifted and talented coordinator and/or middle and senior managers accountable to the headteacher/principal and the governing body when it comes to gifted and talented matters? How do managers and curriculum leaders ensure that all teachers plan to meet the needs of all learners? (For guidance on this, see

Positive Thinking for Kids

by Elizabeth Pantley
author of "Kid Cooperation, Perfect Parenting & more
During their growth and development, children go through many stages of self-doubt. They are always comparing themselves to others, and they often see themselves as coming up short. As parents, we can offset this natural tendency in our children by giving them the skills to think more positively. We need to arm our children with a positive attitude, so that they can stay focused in the right direction. We'll look at some typical negative statements from children, along with some positive responses from their wise parents. Modeling a positive attitude is one of the most effective ways of teaching your children. Children learn what they live. Find out more. "Are You Qualified to Homeschool?"

ENDORSEMENT... Put it all together
at the Belin-Blank Center
The University of Iowa
Q: I'm already certified to teach; why do I need a separate endorsement to work with gifted students? A: Certification reflects the license issued by the state allowing graduates to teach. The type of certification defines the kind of responsibility the teacher can have in the classroom. Endorsements identify what an individual can teach as well as the grade level(s). In 1992, the State of Iowa approved the requirements for a pre-K through 12 Talented and Gifted (TAG) Endorsement for anyone designated as a teacher and/or coordinator of programs for the gifted. The TAG Endorsement allows teachers to work with gifted students of any age even if their certification is for a specific age group. The TAG Endorsement provides educators with the essential tools to promote the talents and well-being of gifted students. Research has shown that outstanding teachers of the gifted are familiar with different learning styles, understand the developmental nature and needs of gifted children, and understand current theory and knowledge about gifted education

Gifted and Talented Links History Now in its twenty -third year, our AATP (Academically Arts Talented Program) began as a small after-school program. We carefully screened 17 gifted and talented 5th and 6th grade students. They were taught by 3 elementary and 2 junior high school teachers from January through May. Our subjects were language arts, science, math, and career guidance. For one brief year (our second) we had a single teacher for a self-contained pullout program during the school day for grades 4-6. Many years ago, AATP for grades 4-6 was expanded to include our two parochial schools, Our Lady of Grace and Highland Christian School. Our overall enrollment now stands at approximately 120 children. We have elementary and high school instructors. They teach science, math, career education, foreign languages, Great Books, Creative Thinking, Creative Dramatics, art, and instrumental music. Selected are high-aptitude students who require a purposefully planned course of action, not just reaction, in the course of basic classroom instruction. These students excel in general intelligence, creative thinking, particular academic areas, the arts, and leadership. Current Program
