REBECCA LAFOUNTAIN, Ed.D. Dr. LaFountain, coordinator of the School Counseling Program, joined the Counseling Department in 1991. She has six years of counseling experience in schools, six years in community mental health counseling, four years in the student personnel field, and two years in part-time private practice. She has an Ed.D. in counseling from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA, an M.S. in counseling from Iowa State University, Ames, IA, and a B.A. in French from Grand Valley State University in Allendale, MI. She is a licensed psychologist, a certified mental health counselor, a national certified counselor, and a certified school counselor (K-12). Dr. LaFountain is particularly interested in Adlerian Psychology and Solution-Focused Counseling and has presented and written extensively on both. Dr. LaFountain expects graduate students to be able to learn independently, therefore she views her lectures as springboards for student initiative. She encourages class interaction, hoping to expose her students to a variety of viewpoints as they struggle to formulate their own style and philosophy of counseling. She also regularly utilizes experiential activities in the classroom to help students integrate counseling theory and practice.

The aim of this article is to provide assistance for parents, teachers and children who appear to have better than average ability in mathematics. It is not meant to be the total response or even the best response to the pleas above. However, it is meant to be a first stop where you can get some ideas and find out who might be out there and willing to listen to you.
How do you know?
  • Is your child fascinated by patterns? Is your child fascinated by numbers? Does you child like arguing logically? Is your child bored in school? Is your child a nuisance in school? Does your child get involved in things and work on them for hours on end? Does your child only perform at an average level in school but wins prizes in maths competitions? Does your child think of unusual ways of doing things?
Who can you contact?
The following people are not necessarily experts in gifted mathematics students but they are people who are prepared to talk with you and make some suggestions.

77. GT-Placement FAQ
just been identified as gifted and talented. How do we citation and combine it with gifted (gifted AND homogeneous Questions for Your Child s School A Guide
http://www.hoagiesgifted.org/eric/faq/gt-place.html
GT-Placement (updated August 1998) My child has just been identified as "gifted and talented." How do we decide whether to enroll her in the gifted program? How do we decide about acceleration? I am concerned that my child will be separated from friends and classmates and may be teased by other children. I am also concerned that my child will feel pressured by the work, to a point that she dislikes school. Also my child does not want to leave her current school, and does not want to be classified any differently than her friends. Please help me with the pros and cons of these issues, and any other guidance you can offer. Choosing educational options for children is a complex process, but here are some ideas to consider: The decision to enroll a child in a gifted program is not irreversible. If the placement doesn't work out, the child can always go back to the regular education classroom. The reverse is rarely true. If you opt to keep your child in the regular education classroom, and your child quickly becomes bored, transferring to the gifted classroom during the same school year may not be possible.
