155. GT: Gifted And Talented Compacting
Curriculum compacting is a way to reduce the amount of redundant work a student must do.
http://www.cache.k12.ut.us/htmlfiles/millville/tag/compacting.htm
Curriculum Compacting
(Adapted from work done by Sally M. Reis and Joseph S. Renzulli.)
One way teachers can help all of their students is to "compact" the curriculum. Compacting is a way to reduce the amount of redundant work a student must do. Many students already have competency in a given lesson, activity or subject, and could pass a test or adequately complete an alternative form of assessment before the concept is discussed in class. For these students, it makes sense to give them some type of replacement material they could work on instead of covering things they already know. The first step of compacting requires that the teacher is familiar enough with the objectives of a lesson, activity, unit or course that they can identify what information is new or redundant for each student. The next step is to determine which students know which objectives. Most pre-packaged teaching curriculum comes with pre- and post-testing material. These, or teacher prepared materials, can be used to ascertain student's current level of knowledge/skill. The last phase of the process is to supply students with replacement work. Students should not be given a vacation during the time the rest of the class is working. Activities that expand or enrich the subject should be provided. Some students might not have all of the necessary skills or knowledge but are capable of learning at a more rapid pace than some of their classmates. Instruction should be modified for them.
