Tadjikistan Tajikistan The Pamir Mountains in Tajikistan, known locally as Bam-i-Dunya (the Roof of the World), are the range from which several of Asia’s highest mountain ranges radiate, including the Karakoram and Himalayas to the south, the Hindu Kush to the west and the Tien Shen to the north, straddling the border of neighbouring Kyrgyzstan and China. Here, in a network of high, wide valleys amid mountain peaks in excess of 23,000ft, is prime hiking territory, populated by wildlife including Marco Polo sheep, rare snow leopards, wild boar, ibex and brown bears, amid deep valleys, swift-running streams and unspoilt mountain meadows. Rural communities in the Pamirs, however, currently suffer from geographical isolation, underdevelopment and a poor knowledge and training base. The aim of the UNESCO / ACTED (Agence d’Aide à la Coopération technique at au Développement) project in the area is to capitalise upon the spectacular natural environment, using it to the benefit of all while promoting environmental protection and awareness. Tourism is still in its infancy in Tajikistan, and the Pamirs are difficult to reach. As a result, the project is establishing a framework for developing tourism in the region, starting with building a consensus among representatives of local, regional and national authorities, as well as among local stakeholders, on how tourism can best be developed to bring equitable economic development while protecting the environment.

This article examines Tajikistan as a particularly interesting case of this issue. The task of nation-building in Tajikistan involves wrestling with factors such as religion, ethnicity, linguistic heritage, and regional loyalties, in a particularly difficult regional context. The author discusses the current celebration of the 1100th anniversary of the Samanid empire as a national celebration of Tajik identity representing important policy choices in solving the dilemmas facing the Tajik nation. The multi-cultural Dilemma for New Nations As Lloyd Fallers observed more than two decades ago in “The Anthropology of the Nation State,” the greatest national challenges revolve neither around economics, nor politics, nor defense; they are often challenges concerning intangible symbols. All successful nations possess core symbolic elements that serve as touchstones for their citizens. These symbolic elements inspire loyalty, concretize feelings of personal pride and honor, and underlie the moral basis for public participation in national defense, politics, and social and economic institutions. New nations must decide, consciously or unconsciously, what symbols best represent their feelings about themselves individually and collectively. New nations in the twentieth century have faced a great struggle in constructing national identities for themselves. The problem is particularly acute when a given nation encompasses more than one ethnic, religious or linguistic group. One can note the problems with new nations of Africa, some of which have dozens of groups with their own local loyalties that supersede their loyalty to the state.

Country Listing Tajikistan Table of Contents Tajikistan Early History Between the first and fourth centuries, the area that is now Tajikistan and adjoining territories were part of the Kushan realm, which had close cultural ties to India. The Kushans, whose exact identity is uncertain, played an important role in the expansion of Buddhism by spreading the faith to the Soghdians,who in turn brought it to China and the Turks. By the first century A.D., the Han dynasty of China had developed commercial and diplomatic relations with the Soghdians and their neighbors, the Bactrians. Military operations also extended Chinese influence westward into the region. During the first centuries A.D., Chinese involvement in this region waxed and waned, decreasing sharply after the Islamic conquest but not disappearing completely. As late as the nineteenth century, China attempted to press its claim to the Pamir region of what is now southeastern Tajikistan. Since the breakup of the Soviet Union, China occasionally has revived its claim to part of this region. The Islamic Conquest Islamic Arabs began the conquest of the region in earnest in the early eighth century. Conversion to Islam occurred by means of incentives, gradual acceptance, and force of arms. Islam spread most rapidly in cities and along the main river valleys. By the ninth century, it was the prevalent religion in the entire region. In the early centuries of Islamic domination, Central Asia continued in its role as a commercial crossroads, linking China, the steppes to the north, and the Islamic heartland.
