    Culture
The most revered figures from Tajikistan's Persian past are the 10th century philosopher-scientist Abu Ali ibn Sina, author of two of the most important books in the history of medicine, and the poet Rudaki, court poet in Bukhara in the time of the Samanids. Tajiks also venerate Firdausi, a poet and composer of the Shah-nameh (Book of Kings), the Persian national epic, and Omar Khayyam, of Rubaiyat fame, both born in present-day Iran but at a time when it was in the same empire as Tajikistan. When Tajikistan was hived off from Uzbekistan in 1929, the new nation-state was forced to leave behind its cultural baggage. The new Soviet order set about providing a replacement pantheon of arts, introducing modern drama, opera and ballet. The policy paid early dividends and the 1940s are considered a golden era of Tajik theatre. A kind of Soviet fame came to some Tajik novelists and poets, such as Mirzo Tursunzade and Sadriddin Ayni, the latter now remembered more as a deconstructor of national culture because of his campaign to eliminate all Arabic expressions and references to Islam from the Tajik tongue. Since independence there has been something of a cultural revival in an attempt to foster a sense of national identity. The succuss of Tajikistan's most popular living writer, Taimur Zulfikarov, is attributed to his abiity to mimic the ancient Persian style of writing and, in doing so, to appeal to nationalist sentiments. Most Tajiks are Muslim (Sunni) but they are not, by and large, militant or particularly strict. Though the harnessing of Islamic sentiment has been a stronger political force in Tajikistan than in other Central Asian republics, the rural, often semi-nomadic lifestyle preferred by most Tajiks is unsuited to central religious authority. Many older Tajik men continue to dress in long quilted jackets, knee-length boots and embroidered caps. Women of all ages favour psychedelically coloured, gold-threaded long dresses with striped trousers underneath and head scarves to match.

Tajikistan Time and Date Tajikistan Culture Back to Top As they did during the Soviet era, educated Tajiks define their cultural heritage broadly, laying claim to the rich legacy of the supraethnic culture of Central Asia and other parts of the Islamic world from the eastern Mediterranean to India. Soviet rule institutionalized Western art forms, publishing, and mass media, some elements of which subsequently attracted spontaneous support in the republic. However, since the beginning of Soviet rule in the 1920s, the media and the arts always have been subject to political constraints. Despite long-standing Soviet efforts to differentiate between the Persian speakers of Central Asia and those elsewhere, Tajiks in Tajikistan describe all of the major literary works written in Persian until the twentieth century as Tajik, regardless of the ethnicity and native region of the author. In Soviet times, such claims were not merely a matter of chauvinism but a strategy to permit Tajiks some contact with a culture that was artificially divided by state borders. Nevertheless, very little Persian literature was published in Cyrillic transcription in the Soviet era. Three writers dominated the first generation of Soviet Tajik literature. Sadriddin Aini (1878-1954), a Jadidist writer and educator who turned communist, began as a poet but wrote primarily prose in the Soviet era. His works include three major novels dealing with social issues in the region and memoirs that depict life in the Bukhoro Khanate. Aini became the first president of Tajikistan's Academy of Sciences.

Country Info Tajikistan Introduction Tajikistan General Data Tajikistan Maps Tajikistan Culture ... Tajikistan Time and Date Tajikistan History Back to Top Tajikistan, Literally the "Land of the Tajiks" has ancient cultural roots. The people now known as the Tajiks are the Persian speakers of Central Asia, some of whose ancestors inhabited Central Asia (including present-day Afghanistan and western China) at the dawn of history. Despite the long heritage of its indigenous peoples, Tajikistan has existed as a state only since the Soviet Union decreed its existence in 1924. The creation of modern Tajikistan was part of the Soviet policy of giving the outward trappings of political representation to minority nationalities in Central Asia while simultaneously reorganizing or fragmenting communities and political entities. Of the five Central Asian states that declared independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, Tajikistan is the smallest in area and the third largest in population. Landlocked and mountainous, the republic has some valuable natural resources, such as waterpower and minerals, but arable land is scarce, the industrial base is narrow, and the communications and transportation infrastructures are poorly developed. As was the case in other republics of the Soviet Union, nearly seventy years of Soviet rule brought Tajikistan a combination of modernization and repression. Although barometers of modernization such as education, health care, and industrial development registered substantial improvements over low starting points in this era, the quality of the transformation in such areas was less impressive than the quantity, with reforms benefiting Russian-speaking city dwellers more than rural citizens who lacked fluency in Russian. For all the modernization that occurred under Soviet rule, the central government's policies limited Tajikistan to a role as a predominantly agricultural producer of raw materials for industries located elsewhere. Through the end of the Soviet era, Tajikistan had one of the lowest standards of living of the Soviet republics.

Russian culture festival put off in Tajikistan
A Russian culture festival on Tajik territory has been put off because of a local typhoid-fever outbreak, RIA Novosti learned at the Russian Embassy to Dushanbe today.
According to Embassy officials, this decision was, among other things, motivated by a seasonal typhoid-fever outbreak in Dushanbe. Local hospitals have already received more than 750 people suspected of having typhoid fever; one person is reported dead.
According to experts, the current typhoid-fever outbreak in the Tajik capital was caused by substandard drinking water. Recent rains and failure to abide by elementary hygiene requirements mostly served to aggravate drinking-water quality.
The Russian delegation, which was to be headed by Deputy Culture Minister Denis Molchanov, comprised more than 50 people, i.e. Bolshoi Theater performers, the Russkiye Sezony (Russian Seasons) dance ensemble, the Premyer Ministr pop-music group, several folk-art groups, theater and movie actors, as well as leading Russian film directors.

    Introduction
Tajikistan may have its problems, but mountain lovers will want to brave it. The high point of the country's unparalleled scenery are the Pamirs, which dwarf anything found outside Nepal. The Pamir Highway provides all the high-altitude thrills you could ever hope to get without donning crampons. This beleaguered Central Asian republic has its own flag, a national airline and a scattering of embassies abroad, but despite these emblems of sovereignty it remains a curiously incomplete and terribly troubled country. It bloodily fell apart as soon as it was free of direct rule from Moscow. The north of Tajikistan is in all but name a part of Uzbekistan; the mountainous Pamir region, despite Soviet attempts to populate it, remains almost a vacuum; while the capital, Dushanbe, a city not yet three-quarters of a century old, still feels like an apartment awaiting its tenants. The country has proved far from stable, surviving on a drip feed of credits and loans from Moscow while the Pamiris survive on the largesse of the Aga Khan. Visitors should definitely check the latest security situation before turning up.
    Warning
Tajikistan is a dysfunctional state with an economy in ruins, sections of the country outside the reach of government authority, and the scars of a civil war fuelled by clan conflict and organised crime. Do not venture out at night in Dushanbe and keep hotel doors locked at all times.

    Introductory Note:
    • The cultures of Central Asia and Iran share a number of remarkable features. They are Islamic, albeit Sunnite and Shi'ite, and they enjoy a common cosmology and mythology. Additionally, they share the same early history. Indeed, until the rise of the Western Turks and the subsequent coming of the Turks and Mongols to Central Asia, the primary population of the region was Iranian. As descendants of the earlier Indo-European peoples, they followed the teachings of Zoroaster and worshiped his God, Ahura Mazda.
    • From the foregoing, we can conclude that any social, political, or ideological study of the early history of this region must take this common heritage into consideration. To respect the shared values of the Iranian and the Central Asian peoples, therefore, the following arrangement is adhered to. The more recent events appear under "Central Asia" and "Iran" respectively. The ancient and medieval issues that cannot be logically divided appear under "Central Asia and Iran."
