Taiwan Time and Date Taiwan History Back to Top Taiwan's aboriginal peoples, who originated in Austronesia and southern China, have lived on Taiwan for 12,000 to 15,000 years. Significant migration to Taiwan from the Chinese mainland began as early as A.D. 500. Dutch traders first claimed the island in 1624 as a base for Dutch commerce with Japan and the China coast. Two years later, the Spanish established a settlement on the northwest coast of Taiwan which they occupied until 1642 when they were driven out by the Dutch. Dutch colonists administered the island and its predominantly aboriginal population until 1661. The first major influx of migrants from the Chinese mainland came during the Dutch period, sparked by the political and economic chaos on the China coast during the Manchu invasion and the end of the Ming Dynasty. In 1664, a Chinese fleet led by the Ming loyalist Cheng Ch'eng-kung (Zheng Chenggong, known in the West as Koxinga) retreated from the mainland and occupied Taiwan. Cheng expelled the Dutch and established Taiwan as a base in his attempt to restore the Ming Dynasty. He died shortly thereafter, and in 1683 his successors submitted to Manchu (Qing Dynasty) control. From 1680 the Qing Dynasty ruled Taiwan as a prefecture and in 1875 divided the island into two prefectures, north and south. In 1887 the island was made into a separate Chinese province. During the 18th and 19th centuries, migration from Fujian and Guangdong provinces steadily increased, and Chinese supplanted aborigines as the dominant population group. In 1895, a weakened Imperial China ceded Taiwan to Japan in the Treaty of Shimonoseki following the first Sino-Japanese war.

SUN YAT-SEN
Sun Yat-sen Born Nov. 12, 1866 in Guangdong province, 1879 Studies medicine in Hawaii, 1895 Leads first insurrection against Qing dynasty, 1905 Develops "Three Principles of the People", 1911 Qing dynasty is overthrown, 1913 Kuomintang, the party he founded, wins national election but is soon expelled from parliament, 1925 Dies March 12 in Beijing At his political base in Canton, 1917 Recognized by Chinese everywhere as their country's modern founder, the physician-turned-nationalist failed in his dream of unification.
In the turbulent and tangled history of modern China, Sun Yat-sen holds a unique place. Claimed as a personal inspiration and political guide by the most bitterly opposed political parties, he is known to millions as "the Father of the Chinese Revolution." Yet his own life was a constant scramble for livelihood and influence, he spent much of his time in exile, and almost none of his cherished schemes came near to fruition. The twin strands of inspiration and failure define the relationship between his life and the history of his country.
The contest for leadership of China after Sun Yat-sen's death had several contenders but one clear favorite: Chiang Kai-shek.

Country Profile

Flag of Taiwan Background:
In 1895, military defeat forced China to cede Taiwan to Japan, however it reverted to Chinese control after World War II. Following the communist victory on the mainland in 1949, 2 million Nationalists fled to Taiwan and established a government using the 1947 constitution drawn up for all of China. Over the next five decades, the ruling authorities gradually democratized and incorporated the native population within its governing structure. Throughout this period, the island has prospered to become one of East Asia's economic "Tigers." The dominant political issue continues to be the relationship between Taiwan and China and the question of eventual reunification.

HISTORY OF COLONIALISM
TAIWAN AFTER WWII
After WWII, the Allies went on to consolidate the world map. The Soviet Union entered Eastern Europe. The United States returned to the Philippines. The United Kingdom re-colonized Malaysia. France re-occupied Vietnam. The Republic of China, also a member of the Allies, was entrusted with the governance of Taiwan. The Taiwanese holocaust of 1947 has come to be known as the “2-28 Massacre ” or simply “2-28”. In 1949, the Republic of China government took refuge in Taiwan after Chinese communists won the Chinese civil war. In the subsequent four decades, Taiwan was under Martial Law and the families of "2-28” victims were continuously harassed and discriminated by the self-imposed Chinese government. The Taiwanese were afraid of any discussion of “2-28” but the memory of “2-28” never died. With the recent democratization, the Taiwanese have gradually taken control of the government and in 1997, February 28 th became a national holiday for the country, ironically, called the Republic of China on Taiwan.

Taiwan has been populated for approximately 50,000 years. Little is known about the original inhabitants, but distinctive jadeware, and corded pottery of the Beinan, Chilan and Tapenkeng cultures show a marked diversity in the island's early inhabitants. The Dutch operated from Taiwan from 1626 to 1662, when they were expelled.
In 1644, the Mongols took Peking and established control over both China and Taiwan during the 4 decades up to 1683.
The Manchu (not the Han Chinese) established rule in Taiwan from 1683 to 1895. Japanese occupation of Taiwan (Formosa). Chinese occupation of Taiwan Escape of defeated soldiers from China to Taiwan. Taiwan independent from China. Taiwan was part of China for at most 4 years (1945-49) during the 20th century. 4 years out of 109 years is not a very strong justification for China to acquire Taiwan. Compare this with the German occupation of France during 1941-45. France was occupied by Germany for 4 of the last 109 years. Does this mean that Germany has the right to demand the ``reunification'' of France with Germany? Certainly not! The Chinese government has been very successful at seducing western governments with the offer of trade in exchange for propaganda. Thus very many western governments have agreed to not talk about Taiwan's real history. These governments have acquiesced in the Chinese falsification of history because they want to get trade with China. I think this is shameful. The Western governments sell history for trade. Most people in the world now think that Taiwan was formerly an integral part of China which separated in 1949. This is not true. Taiwan was only part of China for a few years out of the last 2000 years.

Source: United Daily News tarting New Year's Day, the History Research Commission of Taiwan Province will be officially upgraded to a national-level history museum, under the supervision of the Office of the President, and receive the new title of the "Taiwan History Research Museum."
The museum's curator will be Liu Feng-sung, former director of the Taipei County Cultural Center and current secretary-general of the National Museum of History.
At 11 a.m. Tuesday, an unveiling ceremony will be held on the Taiwan History Research Museum grounds, located at No. 252, Kuangming First Road, New Chunghsing Village, Nantou County.
On June 1, 1948, the government established the Taiwan Provincial History Museum, to be in charge of the compilation and editing of Taiwanese history. In July 1949, it was transformed into the Taiwan Provincial History Research Commission, with added focus on gathering, organizing, preserving and publishing documents and books, and compiling histories.
National Museum of History curator Chang Yen-hsien remarked Sunday that the soon-to-be upgraded History Research Commission will increase its efforts in digitalizing files and opening them to the public, in order to help research into Taiwan's history.

Wednesday, October 24, 2001 E-mail us Home Wednesday, October 24, 2001 Chen urges objective approach to Taiwan history Published: October 24, 2001
Source: China Times resident Chen Shui-bian addressed the opening ceremony of the Sixth Conference on Topics in ROC History Tuesday. The theme of the conference, hosted by Academia Historica, is "Taiwan's History and Figures of the 20th Century." During his remarks Chen said that although the truth sometimes becomes corrupted or obscured, history always has a way of restoring the truth and of bringing things into focus.
Chen said that from our perspective at the dawn of the 21st century, Taiwanese should not dwell on the past with a sorrowful nostalgia but instead rationally and objectively examine the history of the past century.
"In judging historical figures and events, there are a few guidelines by which one may proceed. First, rights and wrongs; second, accomplishments and mistakes; and third, antipathies or bad blood. When it comes to truth and fiction, sometimes these can be twisted or confused, but history has a way of restoring the truth, and time can prove that what is black will not become white and vice-versa. Where accomplishments and mistakes are concerned, the people are capable of arbitrating themselves; time settles and restores, providing objective standards by which to make judgments. As for bad blood, it is always temporary and passes quickly like mist before the eyes," Chen said.
Although Taiwanese history has been plagued by oppression, people should give thanks for the hard work and sacrifice of earlier generations, and remember that there were many government officials and scholars who made outstanding contributions to Taiwan under various regimes, the president said.
