Taiwan enters WTO with eye on China
Taiwan joined the WTO as the clock ticked over, but these partygoers in a Taipei club were just happy to welcome the new year By Alex Frew McMillan and wire reports TAIPEI, Taiwan Taiwan officially joined the World Trade Organization on Tuesday, as clocks and calendars ticked over to 2002. "This marks a significant milestone," Taiwanese President Chen Shui-bian said, who pledged greater cooperation with mainland China. Joining the WTO marks the end to a 12-year quest for the island, the world's 14th largest trading economy. It becomes the WTO's 144th member as the customs territory of "Chinese Taipei," following Beijing's wishes. Taiwan calls itself the Republic of China. But China has done its best to restrict Taiwan's efforts to claim recognition as an independent country. Per the fine print on its forms at the Geneva-based WTO, its full title is "the Separate Customs Territory of Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen and Matsu."

Taiwan stocks plunge on Chen comments
Taiwan's market is down almost 5 percent after comments by President Chen about the island's "separate" status Staff and wires TOKYO, Japan (CNN) Japan is the odd one out in Asian stocks Monday, finishing the morning session about half a percent higher while other markets follow Wall Street down. But the region's biggest loss a five percent fall in Taiwan has a different catalyst: weekend comments by President Chen Shui-bian that Taiwan is a separate country to China. (Full Story) The Taiex is down 243.72 points or 4.95 percent to 4677.17, with companies invested in mainland China taking some of the biggest hits. Hon Hai Precision is down 6.5 percent. China regards Taiwan as a renegade province that eventually will be reunited with the mainland by force, if necessary. China's foreign ministry reaffirmed Monday it will not tolerate any moves towards independence by the island.

China: Banks with Taiwan ties risk ban
China's stock markets are the fastest growing in the world By CNN's Alex Frew McMillan in Hong Kong SHANGHAI, China (CNN) Investment banks that treat Taiwan as a sovereign state or who promote its government risk being barred from business in China, its top securities official says. But purely commercial relationships between international investment banks and companies in Taiwan are "OK," says Zhou Xiaochuan, chairman of the China Securities Regulatory Commission. Banks that promote the Taiwanese government or its interests as an independent state are guilty of "political misconduct," Zhou said. If investment bank conduct goes against China's "One China" policy, or treats Taiwan like a country or government, "we must show some kind of dissatisfaction," Zhou explained.

Healing, dealing begin for transformed Taiwan
DPP Chairman Frank Hsieh, left and Kaohsiung Mayor celebrate winning 87 seats in the island's legislative elections. TAIPEI, Taiwan (CNN) Calls for political healing and concern about reaction from China have followed the historic victory of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in Taiwan's elections. Major newspapers on Sunday urged President Chen Shui-bian to "say goodbye to election fervor and antagonism" and rebuild mutual trust between ruling and opposition parties. Saturday's watershed poll transformed Taiwan politics. After five decades of dominance, The Nationalist Party, or Kuomintang (KMT), was swept from power with the DPP winning the largest slice in the 225-seat Legislative Yuan and set for coalition rule. MORE STORIES In-Depth: Taiwan votes The parliament was the final stronghold of the Nationalists after Chen won the presidency last year.
