Taiwan's government spokesman, Chao Yi, took your questions about the upcoming presidential elections.
The elections on March 18 will have crucial implications for the island's future, and its tense relations with China. Yao Kuei, Canada: Mr. Chao, after the presidential election, regardless of the result, do you see an increase in the division of the people on Taiwan? Can the Conflict between the mainlanders, who came to Taiwan after the civil war, and the native Taiwanese be resolved? Dr. Chao Yi: In fact, President Lee Teng-hui has proposed the concept of "new Taiwanese," which encourages people of every ethnic group to look toward the future, identify with Taiwan, and co-operate with each other, while remembering the lessons of history. Thus, no matter who came to Taiwan earlier, everyone should concurrently consider themselves Taiwanese and Chinese. This is the concept of being a part of the same organic body. Frankly speaking, after decades of intermarriage and assimilation, it is difficult to tell the difference between "native Taiwanese" and "mainlanders." I sincerely believe that social and democratic forces will help to reduce or eliminate questions of ethnic differences. I am very optimistic that we can achieve this result.

From March 8 to April 2, "Employee Life and Health Program: A Workshop Series for Introducing Falun Dafa" was held in the Taipei Central United Office Building. During this four-week activity, several Falun Gong practitioners were invited to give speeches, share their experiences with practicing Falun Gong, as well as explain the fundamental ways to have health and a good life. This activity was sponsored by the Falun Gong association in the Central United Office Building. The organiser Ms. Lu said, "Falun Gong has a remarkable effect in healing and fitness. It emphasises cultivating both mind and body and elevating one's character. The movements of the five sets of exercises are simple, and suitable for modern people to practice during breaks in their busy work and lives." A "Falun Dafa Introduction Activity" was held at noon every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The activities included learning and practicing the five sets of Falun Gong exercises, and four lectures, including "The Way to Have Health and a Good Life," "The Miracles of Falun Gong" and "Life with the Law: Truthfulness, Compassion, and Tolerance Changed My Life." Currently, over 20 government organisations in Taiwan have established Falun Gong associations, covering all bureaus, departments and associations such as the Agricultural Committee of the Administrative Department, the Department of Foreign Affairs, the National Trade Bureau of the Economics Department, and the Weather Bureau of the Transportation Department. The employees practice exercises and study the Falun Dafa principles during the lunch break to relax themselves from the pressures of their high-paced work life. There are over 900 practice sites in Taiwan. Every morning, tens of thousands of Falun Gong practitioners practice the exercises at parks, playgrounds, and schools.

The ROC Government Information Office (GIO) deeply regrets the reappearance and circulation on the Internet of baseless allegations that dead babies or aborted fetuses are eaten in Taiwan, and asks those who receive such messages to ignore them, and not forward such outrageous claims to others. Moreover, the GIO wishes to take this opportunity to explain the truth behind the rumors and the photos. The allegations surfaced earlier this year in "Warta Perdana," a sensationalist Malaysian tabloid. Accompanied by pictures of a man eating what appears to be a dead baby, the magazine claimed in an article titled "Taiwan's Hottest Food" that a restaurant in Taiwan has been serving human fetuses to its customers. Following protests by Taiwan officials, "Warta Perdana" admitted that the article was based on an anonymous, unverifiable e-mail message. The magazine has since written a correction and issued a formal apology.

Hopes to increase local competition by embracing Linux
By Sumner Lemon June 12, 2002
OPEN-SOURCE ALTERNATIVES TO Microsoft's dominance of the desktop operating system are under consideration by Taiwan's legislature, as the Taiwanese government looks to rein in the Redmond, Wash.-based software company. But unlike in countries such as Germany and U.K. where open-source software is seen as a less expensive alternative to Microsoft's products, Taiwan officials said they hope that keeping Microsoft in check will mean greater competition in the local software industry. Motivated by the Fair Trade Commission's investigation of Microsoft's pricing practices in Taiwan, legislators are seeking ways to curtail Microsoft's dominance of the market, Chen said. "How much we can do in this respect, we don't know."
