Taiwan's History, Geography, Climate, Resources, Economy and Foreign Relations
Welcome to my Taiwan Page. Please read below for a brief introduction to Taiwan and follow the links to more in-depth articles covering the topics in which you are interested. Brief History Geography and Climate Natural Resources Population ... Brief History In 1895, China was forced by military defeat to cede Taiwan to Japan. In 1945, however, it reverted to Chinese control after the Japan was defeated. When the Communists came to power on the mainland in 1949, 2 million Nationalists fled to Taiwan and established a government that gradually democratised and incorporated native Taiwanese within its structure. In March 2000, the Nationalists were defeated in a popular election by the Democratic People's Party (the first non-violent change in rule in 5000 years of Chinese history), and Taiwan is now lead by Chen Shuibian. Since 1945, the island has prospered as one of East Asia's economic miracles, but the relationship between Taiwan and Mainland China and the question of eventual reunification is still the most pressing issue in Taiwan today. Top Geography and Climate Taiwan is situated in Eastern Asia, and borders the East China Sea.

Taiwan was known for almost four centuries in the West as Ilha Formosa - meaning 'Beautiful Island'. It was named by the Portuguese, who held control of the island through much of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. However, for the Chinese it has always been known as Taiwan (meaning 'terraced bay'). It is 384 km (240mi.) long by 136 km (85mi.) wide. Although created by tectonic shifts and volcanoes many millions of years ago, there are no longer any active volcanoes in Taiwan. Taiwan is mountainous and rugged in the interior of the island with 90% of the people living along the gentler west coast. It is located 144 km (90mi.) off the southeast coast of Mainland China's Fujian Province. Taipei, Taichung, and Kaohsiung offer easy weekend access to the mountains for climbing and recreation, and Kaohsiung has Kenting National Park, known for its beaches and beautiful scenery. In the early 1970s, electronics was targeted by the government and people of Taiwan as a strategic technology and was heavily promoted through various policies. Since then, Taiwan's electronics industry has achieved outstanding success. At present, the electronics industry, especially the semiconductor and the information products sectors, is characterized by rapid growth and continued high potential. This book investigates the past performance, current status, and future development of Taiwan's electronics industry. The information is based on the authors first-hand assessment of over 100 electronics companies in Taiwan, academic studies of Taiwan's electronics, computers, and semiconductor industries, and Chinese language sources including information obtained from Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs, Institute of Industrial Technology Research, and Institute for the Information Industry. This book consists of nine chapters and begins with a brief overview of Taiwan's geography, demographics and languages, government structure, educational policy, and labor force. (Chapter 1). Chapter 2 discusses Taiwan’s present economic condition, public finance and industry status, the national goal of becoming the Asia-Pacific Regional Operations Center, as well as the general history of economic development and philosophy of economic policy. Government policies to promote the development of science and technology are addressed in Chapter 3, which includes an examination of the dynamic interrelationships among Taiwan's central government, research institutes, universities, and private industries, as well as the role of the science park in national technology development. The recent progress in building the National Information Infrastructure is also discussed in this chapter.

HISTORY AND GEOGRAPHY OF TAIWAN Taiwan Island, the Penghu Island group (Pescadores), and the vicinity islands, are located in the Southeast Asia of the Pacific Ocean. Taiwan Island alone occupies 99% of the total area of 35,961 square kilometers. It is 377 kilometers long from north to south and from east to west, it is 142 kilometers across at its widest. 1. Taiwan's origins: The Proto-Malays, belonging to the South Paleo-Mongoloid racial group, lived on Taiwan 5,000 years ago during the Neolithic Ages and Alluvial Epoch. These aborigines were the forerunners in Taiwan's dawning era. Some of them were mixed with immigrants from southeastern coast of China (the Han people) through intermarriage. Others were driven into the mountain areas. In 1557 Portuguese sailors reached Taiwan and named it "Ilha Formosa" (=beautiful island). During the past 400 years, the history of Taiwan has mainly concerned Taiwan's Han people. But the aborigines of today are an integral part of the Taiwanese Nation. 2. The Republic of China (ROC) Government currently controls the Taiwan, Kinmen and Matsu areas. The Taiwan Area with 36,006 square kilometers includes Taiwan proper, the Penghu Islands, Green Island, Orchid Island, and Tiaoyutai Islets. Taiwan, also known as Formosa, is an island about 160 kilometers off the southeast coast of mainland China. It is separated from Fukien Province on the mainland China by the Taiwan Straits. The island measures 377 km long and 142 km wide at its widest point. The Central Mountain Range slopes gently to a broad and fertile plain in the west. In the east, the mountains descend precipitously to the Pacific. The island's uplands are so extensive that only about one-fourth of Taiwan is arable. Shorelines are fairly straight and good natural harbors few. Rivers are short and useful for power generation, but not for navigation. Physiographically, Taiwan has five major divisions: the Central Mountain Range, volcanic mountains, foothills, tablelands, and coastal plains and basins. The Kinmen and Matsu, with 182 square kilometers, are two island groups just off the mainland China.

General Information
Brief History Taiwan has a rich, colorful history. It became a protectorate of the Chinese Empire in 1206, the year the great Mongol conqueror Genghis Khan founded the Yuan dynasty. The island was made a prefecture (county) of the coastal mainland province of Fukien in 1684, and in 1885, during the Ching or Manchu dynasty (China's last reigning house), Taiwan was proclaimed a separate province of China. For centuries Taiwan has been familiar to the West as Formosa, a name derived from the 16th century Portuguese mariners who, on sighting the island from a galleon, named it "IIha Formosa!" (Beautiful Island!). The official Chinese name for the Pescadores (Fishermen's Isles), a name also given by Portuguese mariners, is Penghu. The archipelago is located in the Taiwan Strait, and forms one of the 16 counties of Taiwan province. The Dutch invaded Taiwan in 1624 and remained as colonists for 37 years. The Spanish invaded and occupied northemmost Taiwan in 1626, but were driven out by the Dutch 16 years later in 1642. The Dutch were finally dislodged in 1661 by invading forces from the mainland led by the Ming dynasty loyalist Cheng Cheng- kung, whose latinized name, Koxinga, derives from his ennoblement by the Ming court as Kuo Hsing Yeh, or Lord of the Imperial Sumame. Koxinga hoped to use Taiwan as his base in the fight to overthrow the Ching dynasty and restore the Ming dynasty. In 1884 the French occupied northemmost Taiwan following a dispute with China over the Yunnan-Indochina border. In March 1885 they also occupied the Pescadores, but withdrew from both the Pescadores and Taiwan three months later under the terms of a treaty with China.
