Introduction [Top of Page] Background: In 1895, military defeat forced China to cede Taiwan to Japan, however it reverted to Chinese control after World War II. Following the communist victory on the mainland in 1949, 2 million Nationalists fled to Taiwan and established a government that over five decades has gradually democratized and incorporated the native population within its structure. Throughout this period, the island has prospered to become one of East Asia's economic "Tigers." The dominant political issue continues to be the relationship between Taiwan and China and the question of eventual reunification. Taiwan - Geography
As introduced by the Government Information Office (GIO) in Taiwan: Location Off the east coast of Asia lie the mountainous island arcs of the Western Pacific. The island chain closest to the continent marks the edge of the Asiatic Continental Shelf. Taiwan, one of the islands of this chain, is the largest body of land between Japan and the Philippines. The island of Taiwan is roughly shaped like a tobacco leaf. It is located between 21.53 and 25.18N latitude and between 120.01 and 121.59E longitude, straddling the Tropic of Cancer. It is 394 km long and 144 km broad at its widest point. With a total area of nearly 36,000 sq. km, Taiwan is the smallest province of the Republic of China. Taiwan is separated from the Chinese mainland by the Taiwan Straits, which is about 220 km at its widest point and 130 km at its narrowest. The island is almost equidistant from Shanghai and Hong Kong. Topographic Features The surface geology of the island varies in age from very recent alluvial deposits to early sedimentary and crystalline rocks. The structure, relatively simple for the most part, is formed by a tilted fault block running roughly northeast to southwest along the entire length. The steep slope of this tilted block faces east and the rock mass slopes more gently to the west. This block is composed primarily of old rocks, some of which have been subjected to heat and pressure. Because of the terrain, scarcely more than one-third of the land area is arable. The mountains are mostly forested, with some minerals chiefly coal at the northern end.

Geography Taiwan (sometimes called "Formosa") in a large island located on Asia’s Pacific rim, between Japan and the Philippines. The Taiwan Strait, an expense of ocean about 165 kilometer (100) miles wide, separates the island from the southern Chinese coastal province of Fukien. Taiwan’s peculiar shape has often been compared to a sweet potato. the island as a total area of 36,000 square kilometers (13,900 square miles), roughly the size of the Netherlands or the U.S. state of West Virginia. Taiwan is 377 kilometers (226 miles) long and 142 kilometers (85 miles) wide at its widest point. Mountains dominate much of Taiwan with human settlements primarily along the western and southern coastal plains; only 25-30% of the land is suitable for agriculture. there are over 60 peaks with elevations of more than 10,000 feet, including Yu-Shan, which at 3950 meters (13,113 feet) is higher than Japan Mount Fuji. Volcanoes, all extinct or dormant, ring the island. Taiwan lies on a major earthquake fault, and tremors of varying magnitudes occur frequently. Forests cover 55% of the surface, but most are not suitable for commercial development. Acacia trees are found in the foothills, and bamboo flourishes all over the island. Numerous rivers traverse Taiwan, and the otherwise resource poor island has modest deposits of coal, petroleum, and natural gas.
