CULTURE
Traditional Taiwanese culture is very similar to that of China. Chinese opera, and its half-sibling Taiwanese opera, are an integral part of the culture: you probably won't understand a word, but the costumes, music, acting and atmosphere are beautiful nonetheless. Most Chinese music is made with string instruments or flutes, but you'll have to go out of your way to hear the delightful melodies these produce. You're far more likely to hear the strident noise of temple trumpets and gongs.
Taiwan can be a cultural minefield for the uninformed visitor. As in China, 'face' is vital, and destroying someone's face is surprisingly easy to do. In ORDER to save the face of others, the Taiwanese rarely express their emotions or speak frankly: smiles and politeness all-round are the norm. Gift-giving - especially when the gift is prestigious - flattery, self-deprecation and flowery rhetoric are an everyday part of Taiwanese interaction. As well as saving face, this rigmarole creates guanxi, a relationship of two-way obligations which allows participants to ask the most outrageous favours of one another.

Editorial Let Hakka enhance Taiwan culture 2001-06-12 / Staff Writer / The Executive Yuan's Council on Hakka Affairs will be launched on June 14th. We cheer this as another giant step toward making Taiwan a multicultural country. The Hakka population is between 15% and 20% of the total of Taiwan. In theory, it should not be too powerless as an ethnic group; in reality, the decline of the Hakka language and Hakka identity has reached an alarming degree. Owing to the national-language policy of the past, the Hakka language disappeared from the intellectual and public arenas. Such a cultural apartheid policy has led to the withering of the cultural creativity of the Hakka language by depriving it of chances of dialogues with modern cultures, and to a pervasive sense of inferiority or indifference among the younger Hakka generations with regard to their ethnic identity. Together, the erosion of the sense of identity and the drying up of cultural creativity have put the Hakka of Taiwan in the face of a tremendous crisis of losing the day. With the unitarian dogma of the authoritarian age, the government disdained and suppressed the cultural and social diversities of different ethnic groups, in order to build a unified basis of identity and ideology for the authoritarian state. In the process of Taiwan's political democratization and economic liberalization, capitalist market competition predicated on individualism has further let minority ethnic cultures disappear under the dominance of mainstream culture. We regard the decline or disappearance of the cultures of minority or vulnerable ethnic groups not only as an injury to those groups' dignity, but also as a debit to the whole society. Cultural uniformity will greatly reduce the vitality and creativity of a country's cultures, and this in turn is adverse to the mutual identification and unity among the people.

Taiwan Culture Explored on Station GCTV
GCTV, which serves the Greensboro and Guilford County areas of North Carolina, is currently broadcasting a series of documentary films about life and culture in the Republic of China on Taiwan. The films, whose broadcast coincides with the celebration of Asian Pacific Month during May, began airing on May 13 and will run through June. These films offer a look at the history, economy, and people of Taiwan through the camera lens of some of Taiwan's best cinematographers. Titles include Tea: Taiwan's Golden Treasure, Food from Heaven: Taiwan's Rice Culture, Little Giants: the Story of Taiwan's Small-and-Medium-Sized Enterprises, West Meets East: The Story of Taiwan's Foreign Residents, Made in Taiwan: Prosperity Through Progress, Theater in the Palm of Your Hand: Glove Puppetry in Taiwan, This Island is Our Home: The Four Seasons of Taiwan, and Deep Love for the Native Soil. The films are running on Monday nights at 1:00 a.m. and Fridays at 7:30 p.m.
Taiwan struggled for decades-from the end of World War II to the late eighties-to become the "economic miracle" of Asia. It remains one of the United States' staunchest allies in that region. This excellent series provides an introduction to this unique island and the people who-steeped in tradition, love of home and family, and the value and dignity of hard work-have transformed their homeland from a poverty stricken island into one of the world's premier economies and an Asian outpost of democratic ideals.

Cultural Taiwan Independence: absurd and unrealizable ¡¡PLA Daily 2003-10-13 ¡¡¡¡Recently, Taiwan authority has been playing tricks in governmental examination diction, history teaching material and language policies and so on. First, its "Examination Department" used Southern Fujian dialect in "civil servant" examination so as to depreciate the position of Mandarin; then its "Ministry of Education" issued the Outline of High School History (Draft) of 2005 and included the history of China since middle Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) in the world history; then the "Administration Department" planned to make Mandarin, Southern Fujian dialect and Kejia dialect as "official languages" of Taiwan. Such practices mentioned above are gummy actions taken by Taiwan to promote cultural Taiwan independence, which are against science, civilization and the trend of history, and is another important measure it has adopted to carry out gradual Taiwan independence and should be brought to our attention.
Cultural Taiwan independence became more fierce
¡¡¡¡The birth of cultural Taiwan independence has experienced a long time development and changes, i.e., it started with the cultural indigenization activity on the island, from which "Taiwan awareness" derived, which dissimilated to cultural separatism that served political objectives of Taiwan independence in the end. Accompanying the degeneration of cultural indigenization of the island, Taiwan independence forces have used cultural Taiwan independence as tools for its dirty purposes for a long time.

Another¡K Taiwan Culture Camp? By Michael Kenneth Chen
Having gone through many mundane camps which consists of learning the Taiwanese culture has been a common event in my life. One type of camp can vary from a 3 night weekend camp with mini-workshops of Taiwanese history. While some of the longer camps consist of a 4 week long excursion in Taiwan with language lessons. They all equally have their specific focus and reasons for teaching the youth. However, it wasn't until this winter which I attended the Tsunah Foundation Culture Camp, a 10 day camp of a totally different nature. The Tsunah Camp is ideally situated in Taiwan where one can have first-hand experience and become immersed in the Taiwan culture. A 10 day camp is a deceivingly long time, but in reality it is relatively short period of time with enjoyable companionships. Being situated in a camp with roughly 35 other peers with the same background creates a blithe environment. Everyone at first has an ideology that their heritage is different from each other. However this figment of imagination is quickly dissolved once everyone creates a bond together. One of the most enjoyable parts of the trip is not only learning the Taiwan culture, but realistically it is the meeting of people with similar background. But, by understanding your peers better, you will only become more aware of yourself and your heritage. There is no better way to understand your own heritage except by viewing it through another person's background which is of similar history.

Beijing Review

Taiwan's "Cultural Independence" Betrays Its Roots
In order to split the motherland, the Taiwan authorities have asserted Taiwan's cultural independence, stating that Taiwan is a "maritime state of immigration" with a history of only 400 years, and the Chinese culture is only a branch of Taiwan culture. They even want to establish "Taiwan dialect" as their "national language" and create their own written language. The so-called "Taiwan dialect" consists of four dialects: traditional native, south Fujian, Hakka and Beijing (modern native dialect) dialects. Meanwhile, they also talk about "Taiwan nationality," "Taiwan history" and "Taiwan geography." "'Taiwan cultural independence' is actually a kind of treason, betraying Chinese culture. It is a serious crisis and disaster in terms of China's cultural history," Guo said. Guo regards Taiwan's crisis of identity, with its cultural identification at the core, as a serious problem for Taiwan. The crisis will be developed into a national identity, which suits the ambition of the Taiwan authorities. Taiwan has been a component of China since ancient times. Compatriots in Taiwan are as close to people in Fujian, especially in south Fujian, as flesh and blood. This is the objective reality and cannot be denied. Like Fujian Province, Taiwan is a component of China. "The mainstream of Taiwan culture is only a part of south Fujian culture, whose matrix is Chinese culture," Guo added.

Taiwan is a complex mixture of the modern and the traditional. Most of Taiwan’s 22 million inhabitants live in one of the large, crowded, bustling cities of the western coast, complete with gridlocked traffic, cable TV, and a McDonalds or KFC on seemingly every major street. The pace of life can be hectic. Many households draw double incomes from long hours at the office. Special vans shuttle children directly from regular school to "cram schools" ( bu shi ban ) for several additional hours of instruction in English, math, or other subjects. All this activity and drive to succeed help make Taiwan one of the greatest economic success stories of Asia and one of the wealthiest countries in the region.
